There is probably more to the story, but considering the fact that this was in the middle of the Cold War, it was in the best interest of both parties to publish it as an accident.

centralization is not the same thing as encompassing a nationality (whatever that really means) under one state. plenty of states containing germans and italians made attempts to centralize, some like prussia, saxony and bavaria succeeding.
Holy Roman emperor was elected as opposed to inherited. There was no centralization of power in this system like with hereditary monarchies. And the empire controlled northern Italy until the cities there seceded due to the emperor's lack of control over them.
The small independent states of Italy and Germany were quite happy to remain independent until the rise of nationalism in the 19th century which is the only reason they were unified.

So this is a proper am I Jewish question. Now my situation is somewhat unique. Basically my father was jewish growing up however renounced his Judaism in his late teens for atheism. I think typically according to reform Judaism this still makes me a Jew (tho I may be wrong). How did the ancients manage to endure extreme temperatures naked? Take for example the Spartans,who in their training were given one piece of cloth each year till the culmination of the "Agoge". Or maybe Socrates,the most known example,who went to battle with his naked torso in the middle of the winter. Was it just stories to make the Greeks look though? Or is there evidence of their indestructible bodies? And most important of all, is it possible to achieve such a state of self control and endurance?
