Pineapple salad/cake, pinpoint barrier punch, idoru singing during final battle, etc
Something about Frontier made it kind of hard to pin-down a running tone: It wasn't Plus serious, or SDF/7 fun.
The final battle was really 'awesome', but uncharacteristically way, way over the top IMO

SDF had no solid tone either. It wobbled between a serious military story including the genocide of Earth and a silly story snout alien invaders who don't know what kissing is. Oh, and a melodramatic one about a pilot caught between two love interests.
And it was better for it, cause it was by far the best of the bunch. The others are good, but SDF is the best.

Seriously? The original covers far more topics than the others, the sequels are all muh idols and music when that wasn't even the driving point of the original.
