The designs in the force awakens were a massive letdown. Other than BB8 nothing stands out.
Who are the designers responsible for this stuff? Even the designs in those clone wars/rebels cartoons look like they had more effort put in

/m/, i'm trying to remember an anime that looked quite old but not as old as Heidi, perhaps early 80s, it featured a guy whose hair was or red or reddish brown, he was an autist trying to look cool but his autism got in the way. Can remember some really stupid mech designs, like gigantic legs supporting a very big circular body thing. The main mech always changed so that didn't help.

BD raws for the various '90s Rider productions:
Shin Masked Rider Prologue, Masked Rider SD, Masked Rider ZO, Masked Rider SD and Masked Rider World.
World is 1080p, rest of the Bluray-sourced stuff is 720p. Most extras are sourced from DVD, as the Blurays used upscales of the same composite tapes the DVDs used. Only extras that weren't upscaled were the still images and theatrical trailers.

We're back from our break. Here's Flashman 04, with all of its visible knockoff TARDIS console power cables and a fight where Toei didn't even try to hide that they filmed parts on a soundstage using a sky backdrop meant for giant robot battles.

How do modern mecha designs compare to older ones from the 80's and 90's? Di you think they've gotten better or worse?

Kawamori's gotten lazy as shit. Back in the 80's he invented the VF-1, Optimus Prime, Starscream, VF-4, and tons of other things. In the 90's the macross designs were all highly distinct. VF-11, YF-19, YF-21, VF-17, VB-6 all look very different, no two look alike and each of them transform differently. By comparison, the 25, 27, 29, and 30 only have minor cosmetic differences and are all really just variations on the YF-24.
