I'm not sure if continuity wise it should be yet another sequel to the 1954 original, but it would be nice if it's today's equivalent to the 1954 one and the 1984 one making togueter a trilogy of sorts.
Wathever the plot is, I imagine the movie being self contained and stand alone, I can't imagine a Godzilla so unique looking getting the Heisei treatement.
Then again Neon Genesis Evangelion was supposed to be unmarketable and we all know how it ended up.

Just look up a synopsis or some pictures, then try one out that sounds or looks cool.
If you're unsure about getting in to Karate Bugman, try out Kamen Rider ZO. Paper-thin plot and characters, but it distills the essence of cool sfx and man in bug suit fight for justice.

Well, if we're only counting the songs (which is what matters most in Macross) yeah, pretty much, but Macross always had better normally. But in terms of overall music (OSTs included) Gundam always had the edge.

I know plenty of people thought Avatar was overrated as fuck, which it was, but there was more to it than TFA ever had.
So consider me upset when this movie topped Avatar at the box office especially when it wasn't half as memorable as the latter.
Has the world gone crazy? Don't get me wrong, it's a good enjoyable flick, but it's not something I'd care to rewatch.
And don't get me even started with the subtitle The Force Awakens. They sure couldn't have found a better name, huh? Lucas' movie subtitles were a lot...
