How much different would mecha anime be if they followed the current trend of 26 episodes? How might the story and reception of them been?

Dougram in 26 episodes would have been pretty bad, I think. Too little time to expand on everything.
Gundam would have never taken off, for one, it practically needed 50 episodes in the first place, and yet it only got 43 and thus the final arc was a bit rushed.
Most 80s and 90s anime followed the 2 cour (24~26 episodes) story-arc format too. It's just that they are broadcasted continuously with a recap episode right in the middle. Stuff like Gundam 00 and Code Geass were essentially the same thing but with the 2 arcs broadcasted separately.
Rushed endings you see in Gundam 0079, Ideon, Layzner etc. are due to their 2nd story arc being written for 25-ish episodes but later being cancelled and forced to wrap things up in only 1 cour's length.

V barely edges out F91 (4.5 G vs 4.44 G) and while there's no listed acceleration for Unicorn that I know if it's an Early UC design so it's probably safe to assume it's slower.
V was the first to use Minovsky Flight so it's definitely faster (especially in the atmosphere), but stronger? The entire design concept of the Unicorn was absurdly overpowered weapons, far beyond the point of any practicality. Meanwhile Victory just has, uh, some regular weapons? Thing was mass produced for a reason.
Though now that I think about it, having VSBRs would technically bring the V over the Unicorn.

You know having read the back story of Cosmic Era. I completely unironically believe that C.E would have been the best Gundam A.U. Had it not fallen into the hands of Mitsuo Fukuda and Morosawa..
Yeah, definitely one of the better realized backstories, race is a pretty common theme or excuse for conflict for power in the real world but gundam seldom explores it, it's mostly adults that wants power for it's own sake. And I don't count the Kuntala in Greco (we are a minority race that looks exactly like everyone else but people used to eat us for no good given reason)

I didn't need to feel that feel, yet I did. The story is pretty much 'dying cancer patients, but robots' and it's not anything special, but I'm glad they didn't cop out at the end.

Would Build Fighters Try have been better if Sekai's Jigen stuff had some emotional meaning behind it? Not the kind where "hahhh i am super strength" but more like Giga Drill Breaker where the attack is dedicated to kamina (rip).
I feel if the attacks had a bit more of that type of emotion behind them then it would have been a 10/10 (this attack is dedicated to xxxx)
Like, his emotional drive is just too shallow.
The show as a whole would have been better if it had some emotional meaning behind it and wasn't a hastily produced cash-in on something that was unexpectedly popular.
Also maybe a completely different ridiculous martial arts finisher every week would have been cool.

It would have been better if they removed assimilation, gave a shit about choreagraphy rather than just making everything a colony buster, give some kind of internal logic to how plavsky particles work and how you can "run out" other than it being a complete plot convenience, not fuck us over with the Full Cloth fight, reduce the number of "rivals", featured more non-gundam suits from different series and actually develop Fumina and Glasses-Sei before 3/4 into the series.
It's beyblade with mobile suits how hard is it to make everything in between not stupid?

I get that Variable Fighters are basically jet fighters that turn into robots, but here' what I don't get, if Battroid mode is good in close quarters combat, as demonstrated in SDF episode 11: First Contact, what's the purpose of GERWALK mode then?

When you need to hover around like a helicopter while being able to fly off whenever you need to.
Maneuvering, mainly. It's smaller than battroid and moves more easily than the fighter.
Gerwalk wasn't exactly intended, anyway. It's just a halfway transformation and someone thought "hey we can use that"

It is an in-between mode that allows you to get from place to place without exposing yourself to everyone and their mother's anti-aircraft weaponry, or having to take to the air when your enemies are far away enough that a walking Battroid is too slow, but transforming to fighter and back to Battroid when you reach said enemy is too much of a hassle given the not-long, but not-quite-short distance involved. It lets you maintain a reasonable traveling speed while keeping your machine stable in even when low to the ground and moving at high speeds.

The influx of people from SaiGar and Gurren Lagann was nice for a few days, and then they decided to turn /m/ into /v/ 2.0.

That's around the time I stopped coming here regularly. I just felt the atmosphere sort of changed here and everyone suddenly got a lot more pissy around that time, also I started seeing more Gundam/Toku/Modern mecha threads and less threads about the other older stuff that I used to come here for. Not sure what caused it though.
