Engrish Edition

Bikel and Walter have a third brother: Brian, a peacekeeping robot commissioned by the FBI. But when Brian returns for yearly maintenance, Dr. Asahina, creator of the Winspector Support Droids discovers that he has been heavily upgraded with high performance weapons and near invulnerable armor. But in their attempts to create the ultimate law enforcement robot, the upgrades by the Americans also expose Brian's greatest flaw. Now it's a race against time to stop Brian... but nothing Winspector has can even scratch him. Only a new, untested prototype weapon stands a chance... but will it be ready in time? And can Ryoma even use such a dangerous device?

Notes:
This episode is an Upgrade Episode, and it is fantastically done. This episode, of course, came out after Robocop, so there's a bit of a reference, and a bit of social commentary on the American police style as opposed to the Japanese style.

Brian's helmet appears to be a combination of a Flashman and a Spielban helmet, repainted.

There's some allusion to Frankenstein in this episode, and Hirosaki's mental illness is actually very convincingly portrayed as a father who saw something terrible happen and just lost it. So many good cinematography choices and use of camera angles: watch the fights with Brian, it'll impress you for a film camera show.

Also... this is just the first part of a two-parter.

I also double-subtitled Brian's Engrish in the beginning. I have what he says, and then what the subtitles are trying to say. Enjoy, this episode rocks.

Out of all the episodes in the series, this one and the next one are two of the very best, and there's also an upcoming episode about Bikel that is just awesome.

Considering who wrote those two, that's an impressive feat.

Oh boy! Hopefully this one is a little happier.

Hopefully this tip makes sense to people:

TWO-Mix pronounces "Communication" as
"KO-MYU-(brief pause)-NI-KE-I-SHO-N". Trying to make the proper pronunciation fit to the beat is a lost cause.

Literally what?

How different is the TV series and the Arise version? I just got done watching the original movie and while it certainly had parts I found really interesting I didn't end up enjoying it that much.

I'm willing to give the other versions of shot if they're not just retreads.

I haven't seen Arise, but Stand Alone Complex, both seasons, are really good. Different from the movie and the manga, while still using their themes and doing it's own thing.
>>
>>13615643

Each series is pretty different all things considered. Arise is a good starting point. It's a lot more compact than the TV series
>>
>>13615643
Arise is the newest 26-episode TV series, with about 5 associated movies, of which only 2 are dubbed and only 4 are subbed. It's the earliest of the GITS series chronologically, focusing on how Motoko and Aramaki formed Section 9 in a time of terrorism and espionage following WW4.

Stand Alone Complex deals Section 9 several years later, having matured into a well-oiled organization that gets involved in more domestic cybercrime in the new era of peace. There's fallout from WW4 in the second gig.

Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell 2 are the last entries in the series chronologically. Motoko becomes an AI and then comes back to dispense justice and help an expanded Section 9.

What would be the advantages and disadvantages of putting your brain in a mech to pilot it as opposed to the traditional style of piloting?
31 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
>>13615505
The weakest part of your robot would then be your brain, not your fleshy human body.
Instead of life support, you'll have a system that keeps your brain alive, which might probably be smaller. Overall a smaller "cockpit" block.

It also means that you can't eject, unless you got a backup "body" for you to eject with. If shit goes wrong and you are going down, you're pretty much fucked unless you got a backup eject pod that can get you back home.
>>
>>13615505
Soldier's wouldn't be able to live normal lives in peace-time? Kind of reminds me of MEC troopers from xcom where they'd willingly chop off their appendages and then use an exoskeleton.

Stopped playing this couple months ago because of that bullshit difficulty. Is this the gundam equivalent of SMT? The bosses and sub-bosses can only be defeated by buffs and de-buffs, even random encounters like the shield zaku combo can be a pain if you don't know what you are doing.

We need more Gundam JRPGs.

Also just noticed that character names are different from the JP version. Li's name was Ki Hakuhou.

So I started watching TTGL again... I put it on hold after Kamina died, cause at the time I started I was only watching for him.
I hadn't gotten into mecha yet and it didn't really appeal to me.

Since then I had watched 079 and like im like half way through Zeta atm (im watching the movies cause I'm a plebian and zeta just isnt doing it for me as much as 079 did)

But back to my point, So I'm watching Gurren Lagann and I noticed a similar feeling to when I was watching Gundam, where before the timeskip in TTGL it felt a lot like 079 (everyone is a kid and fighting a war against an evil empire with a bunch of generals, Viral is Char, I'm actually enjoying watching it/don't hate everyone, etc.)
Then after the timeskip, everyone is and adult (duh) and there is a whole new generation of pilots. The main focus now has shifted to the kids from before the timeskip being the adults and administrators trying to keep the peace in the new world order they fought for.

Other similarities are that a lot of characters have turned into total shitheads, there is a lot more fighting in cities with a whole lot more collateral damage, and the mc from last time gets back into his mech.

there are a bunch more similarities I noticed too but those are the major ones that made me really feel deja vu about the whole thing.

Do y'all thing this was intentional or an unintentional trope in the writing?

also general similarities between series and tropes that arent all "who's the new Char?"

TTGL is one massive homage to the mecha genre, of course it pulled some shit from Gundam.

But the things you're talking about aren't uniquely Gundam either. "Everyone is a kid and fighting a war against an evil empire" predates Gundam by a fair while; enough that Tomino gave it a dark treatment in Zambot 3 before Gundam was a twinkle in his eye.

Fighting in cities with collateral damage dates back to the original Mazinger Z manga.

Mecha is very formulaic, iterative, and incestuous as a genre.

They're all much more similar that you're think.

This essay basically shows a great example, though I've kinda spoiled the joke.

Last summer I found this interesting anime. After watching most of the series I was astounded by all the similarities it has to Evangelion...

I think I'll start with the main character. Lets call him 'Bob', although thats not what his actual name is. Bob is a Japanese teenager, just like Shinji. It is stressed early in the series that he has been seperated from his parents often, especially in recent times. In the first episode of the series Bob is in a city under attack by an enemy threat. Intense damage is dealt to the surroundings and there are many casualties. Bob ends up getting into the cockpit of a powerful robot and uses it to save everyone, just like Shinji. Unfortunately for Bob, he essentially finds himself forced into a powerful military organization, just like Shinji was essentially forced into NERV. Being just a teenager, Bob certainly isn't suited to the life of a mecha pilot. He is put under a lot of stress and often times doesn't want to pilot the mech. Sometimes he can't take it anymore and blatantly says he will never pilot the mech again. When he finds the situation that this decision puts his friends in though, he reluctantly returns to his duty. Bob is often in conflict with his superiors, especially a certain male authority figure. Sound familiar? Thats not all.

anyone wanna give me advice? i also saw that mazinger series have some kind of connection to getter series, how so? do i need to watch getter too if i want to get into mazinger?

thanks in advance, have a nice day

read the manga and watch mazinkaiser.
it has no connection to Getter, other than the creators being fuck buddies.
>>
>>13613731
If you were me, I'd just say watch Shin Mazinger, read Shin Mazinger ZERO and skip the rest.

But I don't know what you're into. If plotless, MotW is more of your thing, watch the original series. Unless you don't want to have to sit through 98 episodes of character assassination and QUALITY, that is, in which case just read the manga and/or watch the Mazinkaiser OVA.

Mazinger has a lot of crossover sidestories with Getter, but Getter has nothing to do with Mazinger's main stories and vice versa.
>>
>>13613731
Manga, Mazinkaiser or Shin Mazinger. Pick one and then check out the other two after finishing your first pick. After that you'll know what to do.

Does /m/ like to collect Artbooks? I've started a small collection this year with pic related, Obari's mech artbook and one of Okawara's Gunpla boxart from MSV/CCA up to Wing/X. Thinking about getting Takayuki Yanase's book that came out a few months back next, and maybe one of the Symphogear design books.

Any other good ones to pick up?
