The Turbokat would conveniently have some sort of ridiculous weapon we've never seen before that's perfect for battling super fast transforming jets. It's smooth sailing until Max shows up and said weapon doesn't do the same thing to him that it did to everyone else because his tensai piloto aura scrambles the weapon's systems. The Kats and the VF-1 squadron stalemate, Razor eyefucks the transformation mechanisms of the VFs and then shows the Macross crew his plane's super compact cement mixer.

Variable Gear
The newest weapon in fighting the Nova. In response to the Tactical Suit's lack of sufficient armor and the Tactical Gear's lack of maneuverability, a new weapon was needed. The result was a Tactical Gear that has three modes. One is the mode based on the vehicle it is built after. For Variable Gears based on jet fighters, this is called “Gear Fighter” mode. Another mode is called “Gear Suit” mode, which is a necessity for close quarters combat. For Variable Gears based on jet fighters, there is a halfway transformation mode. This mode is called “Gear Diver” mode, and it is best suited for quick time requirements in battle.

Problem is that the shirtless scenes were part and parcel with the whole "space rats" theme that they were emphasizing in the early episodes, and they had to tone that down once they began focusing on the revolution and business startup aspects of the show. It's not like Os where you can just show Eiji in just his boxers for comedic effect.

Yeah, the art does have a certain quality and charm to it. And that's the issue I'm on right now.
The one for the end of the Macross saga is actually kinda cool. Since they're not stuck with existing footage they actually draw the SDF-2 in the scenes so the idea of the two of them sorta makes sense.

Kobayashi likes to makes crazy customs of simpler anime mecha, here is Kobayashi's take on the Baund Doc, which he designed for the Zeta Gundam anime but was changed quite a bit to suit cel animation.
