I've noticed that many modern anime creators attempt to cover up the fact that they are mostly going off an aesthetic, a vibe, a simple theme, and the shock of the gore and "mature" events that they are portraying. They do this through obscure dialogue and attempts to be artsy, invoking half baked attempts at philosophy/sociology/political theory etc, that often is mediocre to anyone who can sift past the word vomit itself.
Genocyber is honest about what it is, and what it is meant to be. It has little to show us except the destructive power of human ambition and technological progress leading us to our ruin, in the most visceral, unpretentious, and nihilistic presentation possible. We aren't supposed to be thinking deep thoughts, we are just meant to feel the grotesque horror that is presented to us and feel a bit uncomfortable about it.
I'm not saying that attempts at being something more than an edge-fest is bad, but if that is what you really have at the core of your concept, then own it like Genocyber does.

I loved how he spliced in live action gore in the first episode. I don't even know why he did it, but it's new and interesting and freaks me out.

Can someone knowledgeable about Getter explain what went wrong with this show?
From what I can understand one of the creators left after episode 3, but the issues were deeper rooted than that and the show wasn't a Getter at all?

You're getting two different Getter Robo shows confused. Your pic is Change!! (Shin) Getter Robo: Sekai Saigo no Hi, aka Getter Robo Armageddon, which is the one that changed directors after episode 3. The one that was originally supposed to be something else but got rewritten to be a Getter Robo reboot is Getter Robo Go.

Right now I'm watching Dr Hell make Baron Ashura have a mental breakdown with Count Brocken and it's hilarious. I love how he seesaws between caring for Ashura and then making his/her life a living hell.

Admittedly, it would be better if it adapted more material from the novels, but a lot of the movie-only material is for the better. A lot of people don't like it, but most of them don't look at it with context. A straight watch through of all of the early-UC anime from OG to CCA and most everything is put into place.
Bad in what regards?
CCA's biggest flaw, besides some new characters, is the part where it feels really disconnected from Zeta & ZZ. Hathaway, Quess, Chan as Amuro's new girl, those are about the only other things I could see someone complaining about. Story development is pretty barebones, but welcome to animu movies.

A few things. I didn't scan the magazines in their entirety, only SE. The other pages were nothing more than miscellaneous mecha/hobby items. The scans are large due to high DPI.
I chose not to debind the magazines when scanning because they cost me too much and they're kinda rare.
I left the scans as is because I can't into shopping color pages. Likewise for the multi-page spreads/posters. Much thanks if somebody volunteers to shop and make the pages more pleasant to look at.
I plan to translate SE in the near future the same way I did Phantom Bullets, attaching a translation PDF with the raw scans.
