Never really saw any kind of discussion here about this franchise from Tatsunoko.
I recently watched Casshern Sins and I thought it was pretty good. Wanted to know what /m/ thinks about the franchise in general.
I also watched the live action movie and it was Ok, a bit convulted though. I need to watch the OVAs from the '90s.

I don't think that Sins was too gloom or dark 'n edgy since it was the premise from the start and handled it more or less fine for the most part. The fact that a lot of stuff is not explained and simply left to the watcher to make...

It's not goofy but not as dark as Sins. Still, it has some really grim moments, so I'm surprised hearing it was aimed at kids.
But the original is neat Robot of the Week show. The animation is good but after a few episodes you'll realise that a lot of the fights are almost entirely made of stock footage. Ignore that and it's still quite good and kind of fun.

So, people often split mecha anime into two different categories: real and super. But I was wondering which of these types of the following mecha anime styles /m/ prefers:
1. a mecha anime that is mostly about combat and possibly the technological side of the mechs (Gurren Lagann and Mobile Fighter G Gundam are pretty much illogical stories with the main excitement being the fights, but Gurren Lagann does often become the second type)

Depends what I'm in the mood for.
Does it have to be a style? There are shows which have a fight every episode but still focus a ton on the relationships between the characters.And stock footageAnd whether or not character B would stand a chance against character A if he got serious
I prefer the second type, but the only good anime I can think of that really fits this seems to be Code Geass. I feel like there were breaks of like four episodes before a mech appeared on screen again.

It's a really, really meta way of saying "this show was made for the sake of entertainment".
The mystery of Paradigm city was never supposed to be made clear. It was meant to be like a serial show; there's mystery and an obvious background that's always hinted at, but it was never intended to be revealed or truly explained.
Big O wasn't written with an ending in mind, just the adventure. When the show was picked up for S2 on CN, they asked for an ending and a revelation...
