Sup guys, long story short I'm going to be fighting in a full contact karate comp in May, and I'll be going up against some kyokushin guys so I'm just looking for some pointers in regards to exercises that can help me out over the next four months as preparation. I have gym access, if that helps.
I'm an ashihara karate ikkyu (a kyokushin offshoot) and I'm getting back into karate after being overseas for a bit.
I've also done Muay Thai, boxing and am currently training in judo/sambo.
Anyone with experience that can weigh in? I've never...

Those head kicks require good flexibility.
Do your cardio and wear them off.
Do lots of sit-ups so that you can withstand a kick to the gut.
Poop asked me this and I'm interested to know what the current fads on /asp/ are.
At the moment, it's nothing new for me, just maintaining my old shit in my first teacher's backyard. But I'm thinking my next style will be MMA since I'm in desperate need of physical conditioning that doesn't involve some old chubby white guy who thinks he's asian yelling at you, and MMA conditioning seems god-tier.
I haven't been able to bring myself to do it thus far because I prefer pussy-ass white guys in ponytails to an overly-aggressive...

Asked this in boxing general but figured it might be worth its own thread
I'm looking to get into boxing. I realized its important to know what to do with your hands rather than just be an idiot and start swinging. I'm a decent sized guy but I'd feel more confident if I actually knew how to strike/fight.
I'm an athletic trainer (sports medicine) so I've learned a lot about head injuries. The fear of concussions and CTE when I'm very old is magnified for me more than normal people.
Does anyone know the risk of head injuries...

My assumption is that you would be relatively safe from head injuries from recreational boxing, even if it does include sparring. But I am purely guessing and assuming and would love also love to hear from
someone who knows their shit. So -

Casual sparring should be pretty safe, aside maybe from broken noses.
You could also look into fitness boxing. Make sure that the trainer actually does ordinary boxing lessons, as well, and knows his shit, though.
It's got a higher focus on the workout element, but still teaches you some boxing stuff.
Then again, for real self defense, boxing isn't all that useful outside of the stamina gain and the fact that you'll know how to throw a punch.

What the fuck is up with you guys? How do you religiously tune in to watch a 3 hour show twice a week with 2 and a half hours of man-drama and commercials to see thirty minutes of greasy sluts and fake fighting, if that? Not to mention shelling out like 80 bucks for a PPV event with an outcome you deep down have already anticipated weeks beforehand. It's really predictable, the most popular rassler always wins the championship. Like do you just delude yourself until there's some feeling of suspense?
I'm really trying to wrap my head around this. I mean I understand that you need willing suspension of disbelief to enjoy all tv shows but come on, you KNOW it's not real and yet you'll pay to go watch it and make signs and scream your asses off as if it affects the outcome of the "match".
I can't even look at pro rasslers without being grossed out, like do they just lay down a tarp and roll in baby oil and crisco to get that look? And the so-called divas... Like just watch porn if you want to see a skanky chick doing nasty shit, they'll be hotter and fully naked. There is a BJJ place in my town, and a boxing place in my town and there's also a muay thai place.
Should I enroll in all 3 for a year each? Is it worth the money. Will I hurt myself, break fingers?

BJJ and boxing have no overlap from what I know, Muay Thai has overlap with both and is even more physically demanding than those two.
I suggest starting with the least physically demanding art, then starting another one or two months in.
Do Muay Thai once you have been doing the two others for a year or so.
However, I never did Muay Thai and only know a bit about it from /asp/, so I might be talking out of my ass.
