The meme is that kung fu is bad. Because a lot of it (Shaolin particularly) is taught as a performing art rather than as a fighting system.

The best way to explain the appeal for me is that it's like watching old MMA. Back in the day you had two guys entering a ring who'd never trained outside of their respective disciplines; you'd see a boxer taking on a krotty, or sambo taking on TKD. Nowadays, everyone is trained in everything to some degree. WMMA is where MMA was 20 years ago.
