I've got 225/45zr17 94w xl tires, and i need to know, if i replace one of them (it's completely bald and I can only afford to replace one right now), does it have to be ZR, or can it be R and there will be no problem?

Its not what I'd call dangerous.
Those letters are speed ratings, saying the maximum speed a tyre is designed to run at without shredding itself or having a blowout
What will happen is uneven wear compared to the others, slight pulling to one side during heavier braking if the traction of the tires differ greatly and maybe some slight vibration
R is completely different to ZR. R is a rating of merely 106 mph, Z(R) is a rating in excess of 149 mph. This is not only dangerous, but in some countries can be flat out illegal to mount summer tires that are rated for less than what your car's top speed is.

-they offer extended warranties (for a price) on everything if your paranoid about shit breaking
-they can get people with shit credit financed
Never sell to them.

How does size factor into the performance of a tire for purposes of racing, lap times, etc.?
My understanding is that the taller the tire, the larger the contact patch, and that improves acceleration. Do you basically want the biggest tire that the wheel well will handle for max performance?

Diameter works as a bigger torque arm.
Wider tires hold the surface better for better contact, but will hamper economy. Less sidewall is for less flexing and weight savings. You can fihure the rest out.

That actually turned out better than expected. There were some absolute shit names in the list.
Aesthetics are still proving to be a pain in the ass. Most of them are made (Takumi, BIT, Miata, and Wat Racing all have head models) but they usually crashed PES15 IF I could get them in, and I don't want to put them in the cup export when they're unstable, or else we'll get the reputation of /y/. I'm just starting to work with 16, hopefully it'll be a little easier. Will keep you all posted.
