So I drive a car with a 1.4 tdi engine.
>>Let's say I accelerate all the way until redline.
>>Take my foot off the gas
>>I press the clutch pedal all the way down.
>>Shift to the next gear as quickly as possible.
>>"Drop the clutch" or de-press the clutch pedal as quickly as possible.
>>Get on the gas again
Is this how it's supposed to be done?
If I follow those step when upshifting, my car jerks forward when de-pressing the clutch pedal. My observation is that the revs don't drop quickly enough to accommodate for the higher gear.
I realize my car is in no way meant to be quick, but technically, why do the revs drop so slowly?
Are all cars like this?
What is the proper way to upshift in a car like mine? What about in a performance car?

Let's not.
Remember you're driving a diesel shitbox which loses its steam after 3500rpm because >loldiesel
>>
Also, heavy flywheel.
>>
The rate at which revs go up depends on the engine's power vs rotating mass. Diesels in general have more rotating mass because the combustion process is less controlled.

The rate at which revs go down depends on the same thing, but is usually reduced for emissions reasons.

If you upshift and the car jerks forward you shifted too fast or kept the gas pedal depressed.

What are /o/'s thoughts on MINI
Past or present.

I hate to say it but I really like the coupe even though it's FWD. Especially the JCW version

Corolla. The fun Corolla though.

But I'm making vague plans in my mind for getting an S60R in the near future. It looks comfortable and more than sporty enough for a daily. The one I saw was $8k for an 80,000 mile car. Looked immaculate, so I'm feeling conflicted about my choice. Like passing over the steady, intelligent and sane girl for the fun one who breaks down too often.

How many of you guys weld/know how to weld? My friend and I just started welding in Auto Shop today. We have a small garage on the side that has a welder and a plasma cutter. We've only dealt into the welder, doing beads and welding scrap metal and an old brake rotor. Our shop teacher is showing us the basics, as well as a bro who takes welding classes. I have to say, it's really fun. I enjoy it a lot and can't wait to practice enough to be able to work on cars! Any of you have experience in welding?

>>
I've never welded before but I'm sure I could easily learn it seeing as every career welder is a stupid, useless moron with no knowledge or skills besides welding.

Yep, necessary skill if you do chassis fab work or body work yourself. MIG and arc welding is easy to learn, TIG is a bit harder. Learning how to set up the machine is what you need to learn the most, speed/technique comes with practice.

I went to school with a guy...he could weld, and he could dive...was an instructor. Today he travels the world, and deep sea/under water welds for 6 figures a year.

What does /o/ think of the second generation Toyota Tercel's? Are they that hilariously slow as people say?
20 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>11291003
Yeah and FWD.

But theyre a good shitbox. such as all Tercels.
>>
You can get them for super cheap because the ricers havent got to them.

Better alternative to the civic and much cleaner examples for cheap.
>>
2nd gen is worst gen, no parts interchangeability with the other cars in the platform and zero aftermarket. Shoot for '89 and up, motor/tranny/suspension are all interchangeable with a Toyota Starlet Turbo, and trips to a junkyard can yield paseo sway bars or bigger brake calipers from a mid 90's corolla. Not bad little carts, all weigh under 2100 pounds, lsd swaps available, 4 an 5e motors have nice Yamaha heads too. !0k bucks including car can yield a 200+whp <2000 lb car that can be insured for under $20 a month

ITT, extremely invaluable tools that you CANNOT fix a car without.

Pic related. It's a really tiny socket wrench basically, which makes it invaluable for removing nuts and bolts in very tight, hard to reach places. I've used it so many times where nothing else could fit.
