Me and a couple of friends are looking at this 944 (pic related) for $500 to fuck around with and to bring to a couple autocrosses, and the owner says it runs well, but it's in shit cosmetic condition.

The early year base model ones are very slow, but they handle well.
If you search hard you'll notice that the faster S2 and Turbo models still fetch 10-20k depending on condition.

the 944 and the 928 are the kind of car you buy for around 10k$ and then spend a lot more keeping it running.
if you know how to work them though, they are bloody amazing. i owned one and am really heartbroken i sold it. it was amazing.
