Sun isn't in fire. On the sun is working fusion. Decomposition heavier elements to lighter elements. It doesn't need oxygen, it's not fire!
I've really discovered the satisfaction of casual brainteasers this holiday.
Have a go at this one - it requires only high-school level maths, but has a nasty twist to it that necessitates careful thought.

From elementary to high school, I used to feel like everyone is better than me because of their grades. My self esteem was pretty low and I think those two things were connected. But the problem here was that I just didn't put any effort into anything. I never studied for more than 1 day (not full day, like max 2 hours of effort) before the test. I didn't take school seriously. But I still felt like everyone is just simply smarter and that I could never achieve that. So I used to get grades like C, sometimes B, but a lot of times...

You just need to get more interested. When you learn more you also get to understand very interesting results and problems which will drive you forwards.
Why aren't more creative, forward thinking, and straight up intuitive individuals teaching us? Of all the teachers I've ever had in my youth, maybe 1 in 7 ever seemed to give a damn and not treat their profession as some going through the motions job where it was advantageous to fill us in -wink wink- on what's relevant to pass the test and not to bother engaging in any material whatsoever. I hate my American education. I had to train myself to be brilliant because nobody else would and in my opinion this is unacceptable. Clearly unacceptable and god, does it make me boil and does my skin crawl knowing thousands if not millions more will be trained into this attitude and perception that learning is meant to be a chore that is only a means to achieving the bare minimum before being thrown into a world where a meager salary with easy spoils are accepted as a valid form of happiness. Nobody cares about anyone. That's the society we have at this moment and the state of education. We aren't fostered with love or an appreciation for anything. Capitalism has corrupted our very core and it's make the education system into a self defeating hell. There's gotta be something! Anything that can resolve this!!! I'm angry and you should be just as angry as I.

My adviser's old adviser has spent the last years of his life apparently writing a theory for how the quantization of things like angular momentum and charge and such of elementary particles can be explained from the algebra of knots formed by some sort of primordial strings.
It's not string theory, but for the life of me I have no idea what it's called.

Electronics have been in a 40 year bubble, we don't need bigger TV's, smaller cell phones, smarter appliances, or to be quite frank, faster home computers... I could go on. EE's have done amazing things in the past, but we have reached the top of the S curve, there is nowhere else to go.
I'd like to think this is less drastic than the article implies; EE s are still important for hardware design, and since I'm minoring in CS I'm essentially a computer engineer so even if it's true hopefully I won't be as impacted....

Some years ago i have gotten punched at my nose from the side and the bone of my nose on the upper part, don´t know the name for it, slided to the left.
My straight nose looks like a "C" now. I had a surgery but that incompetent doctor was not able to make it straight. I don´t know, why he did not just break my nose..

What's your opinion on this book /sci/? (Aside from the pricetag, which i agree its overpriced)
I'm in my second year of undergrad and we have our own course, which is written by our professor in dutch, however you can clearly see he based his work on this book. (same chapters, similar content etc).
Personally I like the approach and find the book quiet good if you have access to a assistent who can help you if you're stuck on a problem and if you try to work out all the problems in book.

I don't like the organization. IMO a QM book should start off with dirac notation, quantum states, etc. And build its way to the Schrödinger equation and the concept of a wavefunction.

They can be dangerous. Within the circle of people who use psychedelics it is understood that they can be used to rewire the brain somewhat. Your established perceptions of the reality you have forged throughout your life can be questioned. Some people find this an uncomfortable experience, others just let it take them where it will and yet others use that inherent ability as a tool to repair damage that has been done to their mind, or just to enhance the way they perceive life.
It's largely psychology babble and unfortunately most psychologists are more nuts than their patients.
So they have the potential to be dangerous from a psychological perspective, or to be useful. Physically the psychoactive constituents are not dangerous, however other poisons contained in varieties like the Aminitas and non-psychedelic look alikes do pose risk of serious harm and even death.
