shaft seals require a specific amount of radial force to properly seal up
that force will be orders of magnitudes greater than whatever buoyant force the submerged balls can exert

Are you saying it would work if you had a frictionless seal?

>linear actuators that accurately imitate human muscle
>power supply
>a computer powerful enough, yet small enough to fit inside

the first two are still way off.

Why bother? We already have synths: humans. We're just made of flesh and bone rather than metal.

How do I explain to my friend that UC Davis is actually not a super amazing school.

he seems convinced that he's going to a prestigious institution, when in reality is just barley above the state schools, and even then falls short of both cal poly's and SDSU.

You probably are going to cal poly and are salty you didn't get into davis.

People make way too much of a big deal about prestige. As long as it's accredited and they're doing research it's more about what you put into it.

Should math be the only undergrad major, and then you can pick something else for your graduate degree?

If gamers had to take 3 years of math before specializing in CS, they wouldn't be there to drag everyone else down.

If sociologists had to take 3 years of math before specializing in sociology, they wouldn't struggle so much with basic stats, and they would probably find the proper treatments of game theory very enlightening. Meanwhile, dumb SJWs would be weed out by this.

If history majors had to take 3 years of math before specializing in history,...

well they could just start teaching math properly and efficiently before university

like if I had started "basic mathematics" by serge Lange or "mathematics for nonmathematicians" or whatever other simple math book that starts with nothing and finishes with precalc when I was in middle school id have finished goddam high school with calc3 and diffyQs
>>

>Anyone would benefit from the rigorous, logical thinking

Why bother with Math then?
Surely you can go directly to Philosophy/Logic/Argumentation/Critical Thinking which actually apply 'logical thinking' to things those sociologists and historians would use.

I've read that the strength of a material is unaffected by thickness - the amount of force per unit area it can withstand before failing is only dependent on the material in question, and not how thick it is. Is this really true? It certainly seems counter-intuitive, and if it is true, why do submarine hulls for example need to be thick? Wouldn't a thin sheet be able to provide the same strength? Or is the thickness just needed to provide rigidity (i.e. a thin hull would collapse under the pressure, but would still keep the water out)?

It really depends on the material in question and what kind of stress it experiences. There's also different metrics of strength: compressive strength, flexural strength, tensile strength, etc. Submarines are under a lot of pressure. More material does mean more rigidity and therefore modifies its strength properties (you'll have to google flexural strength to see the mathematical relationship).

Think of breaking a thin piece...

I think you mean length, not thickness, the Pa it can withstand is generally proportional to its thickness even if just because its mass per unit area is proportional to its thickness

People believe in a lot of stupid shit. There are even people who believe philosophy hasn't been made obsolete by science.
>>

Why do you believe this is an appropriate subject for /sci/
>>
TL;DR
>People are afraid of chaos and want to put order into their lives.
>The belief that your personality is determined by the stars when you're born is comforting to some
>The Barnum Effect makes people believe a generic set of statements ("sometimes you need some alone time" or "[your constellation sign]s tend to be critical of themselves") are tailored to them

Although I'm curious as to why a majority of women believe in astrology while men don't

According to newtons second law, force=mass*acceleration. If you could theoretically have a bowling ball fall at a completely constant speed thereby eliminating the acceleration would there be any force when it hit the ground?

-jaden smith out
>>
>>7792782

Yes. Although I'd argue the ball wasn't really "falling" so much as it was traveling toward the ground.

Tie a rope to the bowling ball and lower it at a fixed speed. It will accelerate upwards when it strikes the ground (to a speed of 0, modulo any bouncing). The force of that acceleration will be transferred to the ground.

I have a little brother who's two year old and I'm wondering how I can get him interested in science, but I have no idea how.

I got interested in science after my dad bought me lots of books about space, as well as demonstrated some basic science experiments (such as making a homemade compass with needles, magnets and stuff).
Since then, I always wondered how things worked.
Also, radios and circuits can be fascinating too, so make sure to show him the basics.
I mean, do all this when he will be old enough to understand all this.

Do you think everything in the universe is the result of an ongoing chain reaction, including our decisions, thoughts and behaviours.

Or are we not bound by any previous causes and are completely free to think and behave as isolated individuals.

Let's find out which side /sci/ is weighting in on this subject. Take your vote.

Given a magical computer which can run any terminating program -no matter how complex- in seconds, what program would you run?

As a follow up question: what scientific ideas could we prove with this machine and with what program?

As an example:
>run a program that simulates all quantum mechanical processes for an entire universe
>run so many of these universes with different initial states
>the program finishes when it has produced earth with intelligent lifeforms on it

then bruteforcing open conjectures in math

When you shiver your muscles are creating friction against each other. This is what creates heat. Hyperthermia is when your body is too hot, so you muscles creating more heat would be a bad thing.

>>
>>7793532
Tremors/seizures can take place in certain cases. Is that what you mean? "Shivering" is a response to lack of heat in body. "shivering" during hyperthermia may be something that is superficially similar but not related to true shivering?
