Think back to every miserable professor you've ever encountered. Now consider that it's only worse for PhD's working in industry than those working in academia.

Only people who don't go into these programs think that the reason to go into them is ego.

I'm getting my PhD becuase I want to better myself and get an awesome career in research, which is the only real reason you should have. also because i love it, and yes in some part because i want the title doctor

love of science + a relatively "ok" salary compared to a fulltime job salary where I live

I love teaching, learning, and martial arts; I'd like to do biomechanics research and teach budo eventually.
The whole lecture for 5-10 hours a week then just dick around figuring stuff out thing really appeals to me.
I'd like to be able to apply myself to advancing our species and raising quality of life for folks.

That's the core of it.
