How would you go about explaining why understanding math is important to the average person?

>inb4 it's not.
13 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I ask this in response to the multitude of "why will we ever need this?" that still gets asked in my college math classes on a weekly basis.
>>
Because it exercises the brain and grows logical reasoning. It's functioning can also be applied to other academic areas (e.g. Wittgenstein).
>>
Well if by average person, you mean someone who isn't in a job that uses math, then yeah, it's not.

Hey /sci/. I sure someone here ca help me. Im curious about how often any given locan may be recorded my satelite. Like for example would it be possible from some source for whatever cost, to be able to view satellite images of where I live on or near a given day.

If you have your own satellite network you can watch yourself on a live 24/7 feed if you want.

I am writing a book and need information. If two people were on a place where gravity is half Earth's, I know they'd weigh half as much as normal. My question is this: would their punches still hold the strength of a punch on Earth? Would punching one another send them double the distance? And how would falling long distances work? Would the damage from hat be halved?

>>
>>7788488
1) The punch should be equally strong in both environments, so the person in the lower gravity place will fly further. Only problem would be the lower gravity affecting the stance of the puncher. Lower gravity means lower friction between the ground and the puncher's feet. Imagine punching someone on an ice rink to see why this might be a problem.

2) Yes, falling will hurt half as much given half the gravity.

The punch would be stronger, half the downward acceleration.

Hey /sci/ I was wondering if you help me build a crib sheet
If you can could you explain how to do these things and the terms associated with them?
If so I will try and give you a triforce
>Expanding complex polynomials, [3(x-2)(3x+4)]
>How to identify and factor out common factors in two or more
>How to identify and factor the GCF out of a group of terms (simple or polynomial)
>Factoring by grouping(4 terms)
>Identifying and factoring simple trinomials
>Identifying and factoring complex trinomials
>Identifying and factoring perfect squares
>Identifying and factoring difference of squares

If you can help me out, I will give /sci/ a triforce, and maybe ask more questions

How the third step was possible? Either the book is wrong or I am retarded"?

Haven't they just multiplied by [eqn] \frac { R_E + R_B } {R_E + R_B} [/eqn] ?
>>
From third step, I assume you mean the third equation. All they did was multiply both numerator and denominator by (R_E + R_B).

Is it useful for anything or is it just hyped up bullshit touted by hippies and rave-goers? I know some people who claimed it helped them understand some Geometric concepts more easily. I personally understood fractal concepts more easily for some reason, but I think overall it's not all it's cracked up to be and it is potentially dangerous if used incorrectly.

Haven't done LSD, but I've done shrooms, and the general consensus seems to be that the two are quite similar. In which case, no it is not bullshit. Shrooms were a mind blowing experience and have really changed the way I think about the world and the way i see it in day to day life. Definitely had a lasting impact on me. As for whether it's useful, it depends on what you define as useful. It's useful for "opening" up your mind a bit and gaining a new perspective.

I had this theory when i was in high school that if we can find a way to insert and remove protons from an atom we can just produce gold from shit like copper. Turns out when i grew older and learnt more shit things weren't that simple

I want to study basic human/animal biology. How should I get started? What are the best places to learn? What qualifies you to answer this question?
