How big is the universe?
If you could behold all the universe from afar, would you see some colossal pattern?

How small do things go?
What makes up the things that makeup the things that make up atoms?

If there a type of "life" on these mega and quantum foam levels which incorporates the sums of the human-known universe as its parts?

We will never ever know these answers. They may as well be >>>/x/ related for all it really matters. But, damn it, can we discuss things we know nothing about for a change? (heh, guess most of us have been doing that since /sci/ began.) Theories anyone?

everything is cellular automata. because it is able to emulate boolean logic gates (watch the second video of this guy)

well you can observe oscillating objects with as little as 3 points in a 2D array

Stephen Wolfram used this to write mathematica and explained it in new kind of science. It's a very interesting field and I can't wait to get srs with it

>How big is the universe?
It's infinite.

>If you could behold all the universe from afar, would you see some colossal pattern?
It's uniform.

>How small do things go?
The smallest we know of are the fermions and bosons, such as electrons and photons.

>What makes up the things that makeup the things that make up atoms?
Fermions and bosons.

>If there a type of "life" on these mega and quantum foam levels which incorporates the sums of the human-known universe as its parts?
No.

They're called astronomy and particle physics. Just because you are ignorant of them doesn't mean everyone is ignorant.

If you're a math major. From pre-calc to now, include books if possible.
>CS
Foundations - c++ bjarne
Theory - Automata Ullman
OS - tattenbaum
Compilers - Dragon book
Discrete maths - Rosen
Calc - Stewart (it sucked ass)

I got a degree in pure math, now I'm reading through the java and algos book by sedgewick

Sedgewick is pretty good , how are you finding them as a former mathematician

Freshman math major here (yeah, I'm a faggot, shut up)

>pre calc
I don't know, some shitty McGraw or Pearson public school book used only for problems.

>Calc BC
Calculus by Demana. Also used just for problems, my excellent teacher covered actual material in lecture

>Honors Mathematics (name of course)
Vector Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Forms by Hubbard and Hubbard. Only book I know of like this, with exception of whatever book they use for Math 55 at Harvard.

if sleep is important for cognitive function, then why dont we sleep 2 times a time 4 hours a pop? >pic related, read the 3rd paragraph

Because sleep cycles are something that are eventually established through evolution.

Evolution doesn't care about your efficiency in learning, it cares about your ability to eat and not die.

People who sleep when it's dark and hunt all day rather than sleeping 4 hours of the day survived more.

Presumably.

Has there ever been any documented proof that secondhand smoke actually harmed or was responsible for someone else's health declining? All I see are government numbers and frivolous court cases.

It isn't really my fault that no one has been able to present solid evidence that another person was harmed by passive smoking.

Point is, I haven't seen any studies that link secondhand smoke to lung cancer, or other serious, chronic illnesses for that matter. If anything there are actually non tobacco funded (so you can't scream conflict of interest) studies showing no link between smoking and perfectly healthy people developing any chronic health problems. There were also studies showing no negative effects associated with passive smoking in relation to cardio problems or heart problems.

But since challenging the scientific consensus is not welcome here, I'll just go "shill" somewhere else.

I dont know one way or the other, but I assume it would be kind of difficult to test this kind of thing.

Didnt help. Couldnt find a link

Hey /sci/entists.

My wife is under the impression that she needs to squeeze out any kids she wants by or before age 30 ish as, she believes, the likelihood of birthing an autist increases by some percent every year she waits longer.

Have you ever heard or seen anything of this nature? I can imagine why this might be the case but she has shown little evidence to support the claim.

>>
>>7795505
You could just google this one, you know?
But your wife is correct, as a woman ages the chances of her eggs producing fucked up kids is increased. The same goes for your sperm as you age.

However, a kid at 30 won't necessarily be autistic. Just know that every year you add a 0.01% chance for it to be autistic, or to develop any other problem.
>>
>>7795505
>the likelihood of birthing an autist increases by some percent every year she waits longer.

I don't know about autism, but the likelihood of birthing a kid with downs syndrome increases with the age of both parents, but is more strongly correlated with maternal age at conception.
>>
>>7795511
I know, and I appreciate the input, I know you guys aren't my personal research team, just curious if anyone else actually took those statistics seriously or if it was a bending of the truth.

Is there a particular reason for this though? Should we all be reproducing at a younger age? It makes me wonder because women and men can donate eggs and sperm for later use, do those facilities take age into account?

Again sorry, don't know who else to discuss this with.

If you're doing physics and trying to prove your ideas rigorously then you're doing physics wrong. Honestly I can't name the last advancement in physics that was mathematically rigorous.

Not that I'm saying there's anything wrong with rigour, but as a physics major that's not something that should be your primary concern, unless you're doing postgrad in mathematical physics.

How does /sci/ feel about the Simulation Hypothesis? Y'know, the theory that our universe is a simulation done by a supercomputer and programmed in a 4th dimension. It's been able to answer a lot of questions that materialism cannot.

Thoughts?

Hey me and my buddy have been arguing about this logic's question
''you have 12 Golf Balls within this set of golf balls one is defective it can be heavier or lighter than the non-defective ball the only tools you have to use is a balancing scale, this will evaluate equal weight. Also for your convenience the golf balls are numbered. Each time you use the scale there is a cost associated so you want to minimize the number of times you use the scale.''
Can some one help me ?

Trivial upper bound is 11 (weight ball 1 against all balls)
Good upper bound is 4:
Weight 3v3. Then you know which half has a defective one (the one being weighted, the one not being weighted). 6 balls left. Repeat, 2v2. If they're equal, you got 2 where the problem can be. Weight one good ball against one of them and you got it. Otherwise, 4 balls left, you know AB weights more than CD. Take A and C out. Weight BvD. Then weight AvB and you know.

Can we do better? I can't think of how to get it on 3, but we do get more information when weighting 4v4 at the start. If they're equal, we have 4 balls left and can find the odd one in 2 moves. Otherwise, we have 8 balls + weight info. Can this be done in two?

R = right side of scale
L = left side of scale
O = not weighed

where you put the coin on each weighing also determines which coin is the defective one. For example, if the scale tips to the right on the first weighing, is even on the second weighing, and tips to the left on the third, this corresponds to the 4th coin being heavier.
>>
>>7794830
>Step 1: 4v4

Case 1 : 1/3 chance of equal weigh -> defective is one of the 4 other balls
>Step 2 : 1v1 with two of the balls, if there is a weight difference it's one of those 2, if not it's one of the other two
>Step 3 : weight one of the two possible defective balls with a normal ball. If there is a weight difference it's this ball, if not it's the other

Case 2 : 2/3 chance of different weight on step 1 -> defective is one of the 8 balls weighted
>Step 2 : 2v2 with four of the balls, if there is a weight difference it's one of those 4, if not it's one of the other 4
>Step 3 and 4 : See Step 2 and 3 of Case 1

The average number of steps is 3.66 .

>>7794845
>Can this be done in two?
Only if you are really really lucky. If you weight 1v1 and have a difference on the first try, you can weight one of them with another ball. If the weight is different on the second step, the odd one is the one you kept for the second try. If the weight is the same, it's the one you put away.
