If he takes a step forward, what happens to his position in space and the position of the raft? I'd assume mass has something to do with it, so if it weighed 9999999 kg you would both move but the raft would move a small amount. If the raft weighed less than you, the raft would move a lot more than you. Can someone explain this concept?

Don't start with all maths, math is a huge subject. Once you have a passing knowledge of calculus, you can pretty much start any science you want.
Sign up for gen chem, calculus, and a writing class at community college. If you take physics, only calc based will be worth a damn.The bar will be laughably low, your grades won't transfer as long as you pass (assuming the college is accredited), and you will save money/time/sanity when you transfer to uni.
