Please explain congruence modulo to a retard. I read lots of explanations but I still don't get it. What's the intuition behind it?

>>
>>7672770
Two numbers (a and b) are congruent by modulo n iff the remainder from dividing a by n is the same as the remainder from dividing b by n.
I find this way of thinking about it to be simpler, as then you can think about them as being the same distance from a multiple of n.
The other way of stating it is that two numbers are congruent by mod n if the distance between them (a-b) is divisible by n.
>>
>>7672779
To give an example with this guys story:
a = 9
b= 18
Then a and b are congruent in modulo 9,
Because if you divide 9 by 9, your remainder is 0.
If you divide 18 by 9 your remainder is also 0.
I've never heard of the concept, but I just understood it by the name. Why is this so hard for you?
>>
>>7672781
>Why is this so hard for you?

I get the definition, but I don't get:
>The other way of stating it is that two numbers are congruent by mod n if the distance between them (a-b) is divisible by n.

Does anybody else here have a tendency to think that their research, publication and thesis ideas are crazy, dumb, or otherwise irrelevant?

Here's my story:
>have an idea in the domain of application of Artificial Neural Networks to some specific, rule-based type of problem solving
>ask my professor whether it's retarded, and his thoughts on the topic
>surprisingly, he says that it can work
>ask another one who's more reputable
>he says something along these lines as well
>he gets me in contact (via email) with a rather known professor who specializes in this topic
>ask her for her opinion etc., and whether my idea is nonsense
>she says that it's a novel approach, that I should try working more on my idea; she also recommended some literature to help me

However, even after getting a more or less positive feedback from others, I still think that my idea is crazy/retarded/etc.
Does /sci/ have any advice on having a more realistic view on one's research ideas? Has anybody else had problems undervaluing their ideas and themselves?

You are pretty much me in that I love lego, love creating stuff and am EE student. But the difference is that I love math and science (except for chemistry).

The advantage of your degree is that you have a lot of career options (at least where I live) so it's definitely possible to look for a job where you can be creative. Don't worry bro.

9 mathematicians are at an international conference.

Of any set of 3 mathematicians, there exists a pair which share a language.

No mathematician speaks more than 3 languages.

Is it necessarily true that there exists a language spoken by at least 3 mathematicians?

What is the general /sci/ consensus and view of Genetic Modification?

In a recent announcement the first GM-Salmon was allowed by the FDA after 20 years of research and testing.

Personally I think this is great news, less feed required, faster turn around, more fish can be produced feeding more people, cheaper - also fantastic to reduce the strain on 'natural' wild salmon fishing.

frankly, food doesn't seem to be the best utilization for GM, I think things like the GM mosquito with the SM1 protein to block malaria parasite in the gut is a far better use for GM, or even the potential for GM creatures capable of absorbing oil or digesting plastics as a means to clean the ocean.

but is the /sci/ consensus, leave your 'Monsatan' hate at the door, your emotions need not apply to the debate.

I'm an atheist who believes in evolution from the overwhelming evidence, but one thing I never quite understood.

The purpose of evolution is that a living organism adapts to its environment to survive which takes millions of years to accomplish.

My question is how did it survive in an environment it wasn't adapted to in the first place for so long in order to reach that point of harmony with its surroundings?

Is it because the initial organism was so simple that it couldn't have been effected enough / at all by the environment until it became more complex / advanced?

Sorry if this is a retarded question, but I couldn't quite find a definitive answer.

>>
There is no "purpose" to evolution. It is just the path of least resistance.

Animal A has a mutation that allows it to see better at sunset

Animal B is the same species as Animal A but it does not have that mutation.

In a hypothetical environment where there just happen to be more predators at sunset which animal do you think is going to have a better chance to pass on its genes/survive.
>>
Read this, it'll refine your thinking on the subject a lot

>The purpose of evolution is that a living organism adapts to its environment

>living organism adapts to its environment

>living organism adapts

>living organism

>living

This is where you are confuzzeled

Living things don’t actively adapt to their environment, it’s the minor genetic differences within the species which allows them to have an advantage if the environment changes.

The more advantages that you have the better chance you will breed and pass your advantaged genes to the next generation

I'd like to pose an Astrophysics question :
Let's say a microwave is drifting through outer space, hooked to a power supply.
Will microwave popcorn pop?
I don't think so, because space is a vacuum, and corn won't pop in a vacuum.
Also, the microwave itself would be utterly useless because of the interfering cosmic background radiation.
Your thoughts?
