Would running an electric current through gasoline cause it to ignite? How about shocking it (like it's a puddle on a gold floor)

why not just try it? I'm sure a big enough arc will do 'er though

How would I make an electric current? Also I don't own any gasoline
>>
>>8063594
Get two batteries, an electric wire, an electric tape, and a cigarette lighter.

1) Tape one batterys (+) side to the cables one end and put it on the floor
2) pull the wire like a straight line and tape the other end to far away
3) Remove the lighter top or break it to pour out the lighter fluid in a small jar
4) Put the center of the wire in the gasoline jar
5) Contact the other batterys ( - ) side to the free end of the cable

Does meat make you sick?
28 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
If I eat it raw, undercooked, over seasoned, old or rotten, etc., yes, but other than that, no. If I eat perfectly fine meat too much, forcing myself to eat, I suppose I too would become sick then.
>>
>>8063469

I'm sure meat has an LD50 value like everything fucking else does. No idea what it is though.

A lifelong surfeit of proteins (meatbased or not) can give you gout. Don't ask how I know.
>>
>>8063469
The symptoms include diarrhea, headache, fatigue, low blood pressure and heart rate, and a vague discomfort and unstoppable hunger even after eating large amounts of meat. If fat or carbohydrates are given in time, the symptoms will resolve themselves over 2-3 days.

18 KB,
What books would you recommend for self teaching PDEs and real/complex analysis? In a couple days I will graduate with a BS in mathematics and have taken (among other classes) an elementary class on ODEs, a class on dynamical systems/chaos, and a class on non-linear ODEs (called intermediate differential equations). I wanted to take a class on Fourier Series and PDEs, but my schedule always conflicted with it (it was taught by one guy in one class every other semester). I would also like some insight into good books on real analysis (and later on complex analysis). My background...

Read Baby Rudin -> Munkres' Analysis on Manifolds -> Stein's 4 Princeton Lectures in Analysis (Fourier Analysis; Complex Analysis; Real Analysis: Measure Theory, Integration, and Hilbert Spaces; and Functional Analysis)

Will do. I have heard that Rudin's lower level book may be a good place to start. How about for PDEs? Or should I focus exclusively on analysis first? I really appreciate the advice, man.

Who said that they have no size?

When physicists/mathematicians see that their model predicts something such as an infinite energy density they
>well, this model is obviously incomplete, or potentially just wrong
but if said model seems to work for most circumstances, they will continue to use it for what it works for, and work on how to reconcile their abnormal results.

And then pop-sci mags...

So what do physicists actually think about them then?
Could they have sizes that get infinitely close to zero (but never reach?) Or maybe a singularity's size is determined by its mass, wherein the more mass it has, the smaller it is?

How do I purposely induce dissociation disorder? I've come to the realization that all social anxiety is a result of too big an ego. I want to dissociate from my ego so that I can once and for all kill my social anxiety. How do I get dissociation disorder? I've been abusing DXM (which works amazing for my social anxiety during the actual high), but it has yet to induce any dissociation disorders. What are some other methods?

I literally feel like my brain and consciousness is disconnected from my body, it's like the front half of my head is empty and i'm viewing life from the back of my skull. It's miserable and sometimes I want to an hero.

I will only say that it's possible, and you might not like where it leads.

Invest time into building awareness, and then cognitive structures to manipulate low level features of your mind. Subdivide and model it however it makes sense to you, plot out what avenues you can use. Build the systems, and then do the low level architectural work required. Pull he cover off the black box of the mind as much as possible.

You're headed on a course for misery.

The exact, absolutely scientific reason is
"SPACE IS FUCKING HUGE"
Like, beyond our comprehension huge. People just don't have the scope for that. They see space like it's portrayed in Sci-fi; imaginably large, but not constricting; big enough for epic battles. In reality, the stars are so far away that even at superluminal speed we would almost certainly never reach them within a year

Are non stem majors paid too much in america? I feel like there are jobs americans make 10x to 20x the pay that the eqivalent worker in another country would make. For shit like working a xerox machine. Should most americans be bitchslapped?
12 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.

A person's pay is dictated by labor supply. Generally a company will pay their employees the minimum amount possible where they'll be able to maintain an employee who can do the job.

It just so happens that the amount required to keep an unskilled laborer is higher in a wealthy nation like America compared to a poor nation.

If you want to whine about somebody being paid too much, you should be more concerned about the CEOs and chairmen who basically just sit in an office all day and make more money in 10 minutes than you will make in your entire life

I don't know whether gorillaposters are sincere or not, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

A sincere answer is that you are either born with it, like the fortunate few, or you work hard & practice a lot. For #2 to work you clearly have to enjoy mathematics so that you can actually spend a substantial amount of your time/life to playing/practicing/experimenting with mathematics.

Which is the most difficult scientific field to do noteworthy experimental research in, and why is it Biology?

Some biology/health science research has the distinct disadvantage of taking a long time (incubation times, etc). We've all heard horror stories of some poor PhD having a decade-long project due to failures & shitty grow times.

However, my 2c are for anything relating to human behaviour. The signal to noise ratio is absolutely astronomical, and frankly, I'm surprised we get the number of articles published that we do. See PNAS, complete joke of a journal publishing garbage like

>(barely) not statistically significant (p=0.052)
>a barely detectable statistically significant difference (p=0.073)
>a borderline significant trend (p=0.09)
>a certain trend toward significance (p=0.08)
>a clear tendency to significance (p=0.052)
>a clear trend (p<0.09)
>a clear, strong trend (p=0.09)
>a considerable trend toward significance (p=0.069)
>a decreasing trend (p=0.09)
>a definite trend (p=0.08)
>a distinct trend toward significance (p=0.07)
>a favorable trend (p=0.09)
>a favourable statistical trend (p=0.09)
>a little significant (p<0.1)
>a margin at the edge of significance (p=0.0608)
>a marginal trend (p=0.09)
>a marginal trend toward significance (p=0.052)
>a marked trend (p=0.07)
>a mild trend (p<0.09)
>a moderate trend toward significance (p=0.068)
>a near-significant trend (p=0.07)
>a negative trend (p=0.09)
>a nonsignificant trend (p<0.1)
>a nonsignificant trend toward significance (p=0.1)
>a notable trend (p<0.1)
>a numerical increasing trend (p=0.09)
>a numerical trend (p=0.09)
>a positive trend (p=0.09)
>a possible trend (p=0.09)
>a possible trend toward significance (p=0.052)
>a pronounced trend (p=0.09)
>a reliable trend (p=0.058)
>a robust trend toward significance (p=0.0503)
>a significant trend (p=0.09)

However, I'm sure this same garbage language is used in biology. I'm just less familiar with biology than behavioural/cognitive experiments.

Frankly, I'm not sure what can be done to improve the signal to noise ratio given the current system

I realize that the math community on /sci/ is pretty contemptuous towards "applied math" and even moreso to a toxic meme field like mathematical finance.

However, at the moment I'm interested in stochastic calculus/stochastic diff. eqns. in and of themselves. I'm looking for textbooks/material that'd be helpful for self-study (current in the workforce with a math undergrad, no graduate work).

How good is pic related for a general cover of stochastic calculus? I'm sure there's something better & more substantial out there.

There are a bunch of Springer books with "Stochastic Processes" in the titles,
however, looking e.g. at quant sites on the web it's soon clear that all the fine machinery developed in math departments is not what's used and what is implemented is are "common sense" (for a broad reading of that term) math. I say in case you think "that's something where I can do interesting math and still get $$$". The practical side of this field isn't very mathy, I think. Not as mathy as you may thing.
>>
>>8063822
Not him.

I have read a lot about the quant job and what i have concluded so far is that people with VERY STRONG computational background and advanced knowledge in diff. eq. probs/stats if not just don't even try.

I'd recommend Einstein's "Relativity". If you're completely unfamiliar with the basics of the Theory of Relativity then I'd say its a bit terse. However, if you've had some previous exposure it's a great quick read that gives Einstein's own perspective on the "derivation" and "implications" of relativity, in a fairly nonmathematical perspective (some math is discussed, but anything beyond basic algebra isn't used).

This isn't the...

I'm currently a high school senior who is going to major in astrophysics, but what are some good fundamental readings/reviews I can take so that I am learning the basics before I enter college? I understand 4Chan is probably the worst place to go for this kind of advice, but sadly I don't have anyone to discuss such life preparation skills with, and I assume there are bound to be at least a few helpful minds on this board. What math is most crucial to entering astrophysics? General advice? Insights?

Thanks so much
