I think this is the right place to post this. Anyway:
What would actually happen if this came in contact with the water?
Depends on the ion concentration of the water. Pure water isn't really conductive.

All memes aside what's the deal with Jacob Barnet. He's working at the perimeter Institute. He's seems alright.
He is pretty alright. Anyone who's in the field understands this
Smart kid. I hope he ends up making important contributions to math/physics.
I don't like his calligraphy
What's with German logicians during the late 19th and early 20th century? There was a huge explosion of new ideas from that area. Many of the major names in mathematical logic, set theory, and the foundation of mathematics are German. Gentzen, Frege, Schröder, Dedekind, Weierstrass, Hilbert, even fucking Cantor was German.
They seem to have contributed an proportional amount of ideas to the field of mathematics compared to other nations, or even compared to themselves, before or since.
What's up with that?

So you are racist.
Suppose a binary star system consists of two stars with roughly the same mass.
Both orbit each other around a center of mass.
What happens to an astronaut who flies into this center of mass?
- would he be crushed?
- would he start to rotate? which way?
- nothing happens
>>8180872
Nothing, COM is just a point in space, there is noting special about it
nothing happens

Would he be able to get out of the COM?

Is there any correlation between general relativity and quantum mechanics? And why no/yes?
I posted this question on r/askscience with no replies. Long time lurker here, and other forums, imageboards etc... this is the first time I interact with the community that taught me so much for the past 5 years (thank you for that.) I'm aware that the answer to my question is either no or "we don't know." But I've been having a lot of thought experiments lately that lead me to believe that a correlation does in fact exist. I'm not a theoretical physicist...

There are several theories/fields of study, see for example QFT, I don't know what exactly you mean by "correlation", I assume you mean the fields of study that try to unify the mathematical constructs/laws of GR and QM,
Also if you don't know about these fields you probably don't have the mathematical maturity to accomplish what you are trying to do, start with studying introductory texts in GR and QM then pick up mathematical physics; http://4chan-science.wikia.com/wiki/Physics_Textbook_RecommendationsComment too long. no because both of the fundamental equations of both systems break down under certain conditions.
QFT gives you arbitrarily large scattering probabilities at a high enough energy.
Whereas quantizing gravity is unrenormalizable so produces infinities done through the eyes of qm/qft.
We will reconcile these at one energy level using a new theory.
>>8180429
I know about about Quantum field theory, and I'm aware that most physicist agree that Quantum electrodynamics explains a "correlation" between QM and Special relativity.
Can "Dark Energy" or "Dark matter" help us with the GR & QM dilemma.
What's /sci/'s opinion of Joe Rogan? Is he the philosopher-scientist of a generation?

kek
>>8179594
He is an idiot. He touches upon scientific fields, which is good because it at least exposes his moronic fans to things other than...well...You can imagine the kind of horseshit his fans must expose themselves too.
I mean he hosted Fear Factor for Christs sake. His credibility is as soft as cooked elk cock.
Big fan of Rogans podcast and enjoy his commentary on ufc
With that being said, his podcast is mainly Bro Science, Bro/Hippie philosophy. His guest are usually the same deal, ocassionally he will get a legit guest that fully knows what their talking about and has hard facts to back them up
Not sure if this is the correct board for this question but I just dug this out of my front yard and have no fucking clue what it is. It's from the Southern Appalachian area. Any help would be appreciated

Lately I have been reading books on the science behind metallurgy. Fun stuff... However, I can't apply this knowledge to anything as I am just a computer programmer.
I hate learning things abd not being able to use it. I am crazy about metals and alloys abd learning about them but what use is it?
Basically learning about certain things seems useless.
Do you try to apply everything you learn?
Well you could always kill yourself.

Thanks pop/sci/, for giving people a false understanding of pseudoscience. I thought it might be interesting to take a Facebook quiz on pseudoscience. Besides half of it being global warming melting ice sheet propaganda, I stumbled on this gem. Tell me what you think, /sci/, is someone at the North Pole really moving faster than someone at the equator?

Kek good one faggot. The surface speed of the equator is larger than that of either of poles. While they both cover the same angle in the same amount of time, the equator covers a greater distance.
Speed is given by distance over time (Which is why we measure it in kilometres or miles/hour). If the distance is larger so too will be the speed.
Git gud brainlet
I was at dinner with the family earlier and my mom went off on a tangent about how the government was poisoning us with chemicals. She said we are sicker than ever before and processed food is giving babies allergies because the parents ate the food. She said this knowing that I'm in med school and everything she said drives me crazy. I bit my tongue because I'm an adult and I don't get in arguments in restaurants. Is there some way to get rid of the propaganda she's swallowed or should I just stick her in a nursing home before she gets worse?
