I think that's the point.

OP wants to see if there is a link between lying to yourself and getting fatter.

It would be an interesting psychology research.
At the very least, it would prove that lying comes bundled with other bad habits.

Why is it that we need carbohydrates?

From glycolysis we get pyruvate, which is turned into Acetyl-CoA to be used in the krebs cycle. However, we also get loads of Acetyl-CoA from beta-oxidation. So why is it that we need glucose to fuel the krebs cycle?

Or rather, what are the end products mediated by glycolysis that we can't get from beta-oxidation?

We don't. Carbohydrates are not essential.

I've got an important question to "computer scientists".
What the fuck have you been doing for the past, what, 50 years?

It's 2015. I needed to perform one simple task: go through a fuckload of files and make some changes. Really simple changes, like, adding a namespace or some crap like that. And you know what? I spent ten minutes deciding: should I spend a hour writing a goddamn script or should I just go through the files manually like an idiot?

WHY THE FUCK CAN'T MY COMPUTER DO IT FOR ME? Isn't it the whole point of computers - automation? I CAN EXPLAIN MY TASK IN FIVE NATURAL LANGUAGE WORDS, WHERE THE FUCK IS MY NATURAL LANGUAGE COMMAND LINE?

FIFTY FUCKING YEARS!

If you know what a namespace is, you should be able to resolve what's involved with what you're asking.

If all HIV infected died right now, will HIV eternally end or can humans contract it again from another source
15 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
SIV would still exist in cheeky little monkeys and it is possible that someone would contract a version of that again.
>>
>>7639184
The virus was traced back to the Congo in the early 20th century. to bushmen who used to hunt and kill chimps for food/money. SIV was transmitted to humans in that time frame, but since Congo had a lot of other diseases and poverty most people died of those diseases. It wasn't until Haitians workers returned to Haiti that the virus became noticeable to public health officials. By that time in the 1970s it had spread to the US and from there the world. Now you know how HIV/AIDS spread.

How many hours of sleep is optimal?

I used to sleep 8 hours a night and would always get tired after being awake for 16 hours.

Once I started setting my alarm for 6 hours now I do not get tired until being awake for 18 hours.

I do not feel different throughout the day aside from getting up in the morning.

Has anyone else noticed anything similar? Is there a name for this effect? Any relevant studies or wikipedia articles?

it's called hypomania

you're on your way to a psychotic break senpai

6 hours of sleep = psychotic break?

Or are you trying to bully me for something else I said?
>>
There is something which some studies agree on but in absolute sense it actually feels good to most of adults.
Sleep 6 -8 hours then mandatory sleep 1 - 2 hours at afternoon... I don't do that anymore.. I have too much free time and I tend to either don't sleep or sleep too much,..but when I'm working or in education I do exactly what I wrote above and quality of life skyrockets.

Does IQ means something? Why? Is it possible to increase it? If yes how?

>Does IQ means something? Why?
yes

modern IQ tests are highly g-loaded so they are good at measuring general intelligence

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G_factor_(psychometrics)

>Is it possible to increase it? If yes how?
yes, by practicing IQ tests and learning the patterns

this will remove the g-loading though and not actually increase intelligence
>>
>>7639059
What about increasing the G factor?
>>
>>7639059
Bit it increases the result not the IQ, I mean how can I increase IQ, not the result of test

I posted this on /adv/ but was recommended to come here. So i'm just gonna copy and paste what I said.

"hey /adv/ do any of you know anything about cannabis?

I should explain. Iv'e had chrons disease since I was 10 years old. When I first contracted it I nearly almost died from pancreatitus.and just recently(back in February) I almost died again. I was bleeding for a good 2 months before it happened. But it got steadily worse and worse. Long story short, I almost went into a coma and died.

I was first given Salafak as a treatment originally. (as a child) but I was told by another doctor that "that's ineffective I don't even know why they gave you that." But I tried explaining to the doctor that when I was a kid I often missed a lot of my medication and at the time I was living with my mother who was on welfare. And we didn't have any good or much to eat..

So I am taking remicade now. And I am aware it can have some potentially really dangerous side effects. A friend of mine actually died as a result of medication he was taking for his chrons disease. My cramps and pain have started up again. And I am really concerned to start taking my medication again. Long story short it can cause Lymphoma(among other horrible things.) and that really scares me..

So iv'e been taking cananbis(indica strain. And pot edibles.) and I always end up feeling a lot better the next day. My appetite goes up and I feel very relaxed/comfortable.

I have been trying really hard to look for research pertaining to it's effectiveness. I have a very very severe case.(All the way from my mouth to my anus.) is pretty much inflamed.

I heard that smoking only relieves symptoms. But edibles have supposedly been shown to suppress something called an alpha TNF blocker or something(which basically makes my immune system work overtime and that's when I get the pain.)

>>
But I can't seem to find any info regarding edibles and specifically indica strain. It's difficult to find help because my doctors don't give two shits about me and don't want me smoking cannabis because it can "mess with the medicine.
>>
>>7639046
I know next to nothing about marijuana in the context of inflammation, but I as well have had a chronic pain condition (type 2 trigeminal neuralgia and peripheral nerve issues that resembled MS) since I was ~13. The peripheral nerve issues I resolved, and an MRI shows no lesions or evidence of demyelination. To this day I don't know what or why.

Reluctantly, I'd suggest looking into cocoa beans though. They can be a fairly potent anti-inflammatory, and helped my trigeminal nerve pain from a number of angles. Part of that is due to flavan-3-ols, part of it is due to the anandamide / endo-cannabinoid reuptake inhibitors which influence immune system function. Some of that might be due to systemically liberating histamine from mast cells, which probably net reduces specific immune system activity. The compounds that directly inhibit the chain of inflammation escape my memory though.

Ginger root is also a potent anti-inflammatory, though I know Crohn's entails much more than typical inflammatory processes. I assume you've also had your gut flora checked, and been checked for things like an active H. Pylori infection. It's amazing what tests slip through the cracks. Trigeminal neuralgia showed me that with startlingly blunt clarity.

Good luck anon. Sorry I can't provide anything about your actual question.
>>
>>7639060

I read what you said. Sadly I don't understand science that much but I get the basic idea of what you said.(that's on me though so I apologize.)

The medication my friend took was Humera. Which has been supposedly linked as a very VERY dangerous medication...

I take Remicade which is a fairly newer drug. Thank you for the suggestion though.

http://www.drugs.com/sfx/remicade-side-effects.html this is some information I found on remicade. Iv'e found a lot more but I think this would be a good source.(as iv'e been TOLD anyway..drugs.com is supposedly a good source for knowing about certain medication.)

And from what I see this does not look good. I'm also a young male.(24) and it mentions how this medication has a higher risk of giving something called uh...T lymphoma or something. I forgot the full term sorry. Anyway it's usually a very fatal disease(I should know. My friend died of Liekima which i'm not sure if it's the same thing or not.)

My doctor would say things like "Oh well the medication can cause issues with the spine and thus cannabis is not good to go with remicade."

I am paraphrasing there though. It's hard for me to remember all these complicated medical terminology.

If cannabis doesn't work I could die. My "Doctor" also says that cannabis can cause psychosis and memory loss. And from what iv'e researched there's no real proof of that. But even if that was the case? i'm pretty sure that having psychosis(which iv'e experienced in the past from cannabis yes. But it usually goes away after a few days.) is still a better negative side effect than getting some horrible cancer and dying. It only took 11 months for my friend to croak. So I don't want to be on the chopping block next.

In a few days I'll be tutoring a student privately for the first time (GCSE maths). Has anyone here done this before and got any tips? Engineering graduate here, for context.

>Engineering

maybe you should leave tutoring to the math pros
>>
Listen to what the student is telling you. Too many tutors try to teach a lot of stuff that they find interesting, but that doesn't help the student directly. You can easily get caught up in passing on your knowledge, and forget that the most important thing is to pay attention to the other person.

It can help if you ask the person in advance what exactly they are looking for. Then you can brush up on the material as required.

Don't do the student's homework for them. Don't even consider looking at homework problems (unless it's problems that have been marked and returned). Make up your own, similar problem.

Also, try not to goof off a lot. Some polite conversation is okay, but if the student goes away having paid for an hour of your time and only gotten a tiny bit of knowledge for it, they won't be happy, even if they were the one initiating the conversation. They probably won't come back for a second session.

Middle class parents saving for college since before I was born senpai. Also scholarships.

I'm studying CompSci and I'm pretty good at it.

However, I hate it.

I think science is extremely important, but I hate /sci/, I hate engineering. Is there hope for me, or should I bail? I love music and art but that won't pay the bills.

What part of science do you love?

A huge part of being a scientist is writing tedious scientific reports and begging for funding
>>
>>7639003
I can't think of anything I like about science at the moment. I've been burned the fuck out by science. It has it's moments, but I never go on /sci/ besides for stuff like this. I don't give a fuck about "science literature" or tv shows or anything like that. I don't spend my free time studying cosmology.

And just to clear things up, most people who study CompSci in Uni go into software engineering. I'm not really looking at going into Academia (and not that I'm interested in working in indstry either).
>>
>>7639014
Then why would you do science? There's money in other areas too (finance/biz/skilled tradesman)

Tbh, most Compsci guys go into programming which is pretty different from what a scientist/ engineer would do. If you like programming stick with it

Going through addition mechanisms of alkenes, and I've run into a stumper. I am wondering why bromination (which is normally an anti addition) of trans-anethole can sometimes produce minor amounts of syn addition, whereas cinnamic acid and trans-stilbene can not. All three of these molecules have resonance stability due to their phenyl groups. I cant see why trans-anethole would be favored for a syn rxn. Plz halp.

It's directly from the lab report questionnaire. I also have seen it mentioned online, and explained inadequately.
