What is the substance matter is made of?

What is the material that forms the smallest particles?

literally the particles themselves. the fundamental particles are called fundamental for a reason. they are the smallest unit of "something"

Hey /sci/, I have a question.
Do you think there could be other events in the universe on the same scale as life? Could we comprehend them?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Laws of physics are the same throughout the universe.
Materials that make up Earth are common in space.
We will comprehend it.
>>
>>7801517
the word for things we cant comprehend is god. i think there is but I cannot begin to realize its existence as life is too self important.
>>
Life is just a matter of complexity.

Things with the same amount of complexity extremally diferent from life can exist

Let's please have a general thread about the Solar system.

I grew up with the nine-planet model, and therefore watched with extreme pleasure as New Horizons photographed Pluto-I'd been wanting to see pictures of it since I was a kid. I also tuned out the multiplicity of new bodies/KBOs for some years, being busy with life. However, I've re-visited the subject, and to self-teach, I followed along with wiki to build an arbitrary version of the largest known bodies in the solar system at the moment, and (sometimes) their attendant satellites.

I've scared people off with my autism enough times in OPs to know not to lay it on too thick in the OP itself. But in later posts, I'm going to get autistic. I have substantive questions.

Charon and Pluto are a double dwarf planet with 4 moons.
>>
Why is everyone always so concerned with pluto. There are far more interesting worlds in the system to obsess over, not to mention probably a dozen more KBOs bigger than pluto still floating out there. Fuck pluto.

Dwarf planets are still planets, but as a sub classification.

Its a requirement as our understanding of the solar system grows and simply calling everything big orbiting the sun a planet is too vague.

What is the most basic vocabulary physics can be reduced to (e.g first-order logic, higher-order logic, it can't be reduced from natural language, etc.)? Whether or not this question has pragmatic significance, its hard to say that the question doesn't have meaning, and unlike the phil of science topics usually posted on this board (Are atoms really real or just useful theoretical models for explaining experiential regularities?, but like what if we live in the matrix bro? Physics can't prove we don't, etc), it tends to attract people who actually know some physics. If nothing else its an interesting mental exercise. I'll be replying to this with a few possible answers (not my own, i'll just give a rough description of the popular views in analytic phil), hopefully those won't be the only posts.

>logical positivism
This is the scapegoat of modern analytic philosophy, and while I think its true that its an untenable position and the critiques are damning, the positions supports had some useful insights. The position is this: the entire meaning of a statement lies in logical relations. What those relations are between isn't essential to the view because the relata is *nothing but* its place in the schema of logical primitives (sense data is possibly an exception but that isn't very important).

If your interested in why no one takes positivism seriously read this paper, its pretty short http://www.ditext.com/quine/quine.html

When filming a Samsung Galaxy s6 edge, or any device with a similar display probably, -I just happened to see this one- there's light stripes floating from the display's bottom upwards. It's probably nothing unusual, but what is this effect called? And why doesn't this appear when filming an iPhone's display? (Both were in the same video)
Thanks

I would hazard that it's something to do with the refresh rate of the screen, if it's lower than the frames your camera can record, you will capture images of empty frames in between

It may seem a but restarted, but give figuring out calculus a try. Not just understanding it, but start with a simple idea and work your way to developing some Math to describe it! I had a pretty fun time figuring my way around Rate Of Change in graphs several years ago and it helped me a lot once I got to calc.

Define math problems.
Define fun.
Trying to understand real analysis is a problem and its fun.
On that matter, "real analysis" by rudin is my favourite.
Dessert it with some Measure theory and you will understand probability on a whole different level

Is it a retarded idea to develop personal assistant AI's a la IBM's Watson to work in industrial/academic labs to aid researchers?

At the very least they could do some titrations or give on-the-spot info via voice recognition.

So.../sci/ I'm 35...didn't pay attention in highschool.
My father passed away last week after taking care of him for 14 months (cancer) but I've finally found what I enjoy in life and want to do.
I fucking love science. I love every branch, I love the curiosity.
Downside?
I'm 35, no degree, no classes, just what I teach myself currently through discussions and lectures online.

How does someone my age go about building the ground work to get a career with NASA?
Yes, it's a long shot.
Yes, I don't have the greatest math skills.
I'm ambitious as fuck, I don't quit.

How do I integrate the characteristics I have and the passion I've found for science into a job, at such a late stage.
I constantly see 12 year old kids and shit just breezing through math, engineering.

It all seems so intimidating and I feel like nobody would take the time to work with me.

Classes seem to ahead of what I know (they require highschool cal classes, etc)

tl;dr
>35 year old anon finally realized he loves science, has no previous education in math or science but what I've taught myself.
How do I make this a possibility?
Looking into computer science areas mostly, but I'm also interested in an astronaut career.

Sup /sci/.
I'm a mathematician with an interest in psychometry. Currently thinking about creating my own IQ test, and I came to ask myself a few questions.

The overall IQ score should be a weighted average of verbal intelligence, pattern recognition, short term memory and spatial intelligence. But how should I weight these different areas.

Consider the extreme cases of an autist who can only into pattern recognition while having absolutely no verbal skills. Now consider the opposite, i.e. a rapper with extremely good verbal intelligence but who failed calculus in school. How should we compare these two? Which one would be more intelligent in the end?

Any input would be highly appreciated.

I remember... once upon a time... that intelligence was all about your brain. How good you were a math, physics, puzzles, etc.

Then people who were good at sports would called athletic. People who would have good verbal skills would be called articulate. A person with good social skills would be called outgoing. A person with artistic talent would be called talented.

Now to hell with you. People good at sports have 'spatial intelligence'. Good verbal skills have 'verbal intelligence'. Social skills is now 'social intelligence' and I'm sure they have some bullshit made up intelligence for art too, I've seen those pictures posted on fucking facebook one too many times.

I'm tired of this you fucking morons. No, you are not intelligent. You are not smart. You may be articulate, talented, athletic but you are not fucking intelligent. Stop making up definitions just because it makes you feel good.

I am not athletic and I don't give a fuck. You don't have to tell me that I am 'mentally athletic' or some bullshit like that. I am articulate too and that is fine.

Fuck right off OP, and take your gang of facebookers with you.
>>
An IQ test cannot accurately predict the IQ of anymore more intelligent than its creators, so unfortunately your IQ test can only be used to tell if someone is mentally retarded or not.
>>
Why just short term memory? Is being able to remember events and information accurately from long ago not a measure of intelligence?
