Explain why this wouldn´t work.

The ball is dropped on the red line, suppose to be some flexible material like rubber. The blue box is slightly heavier than air making it rest at the bottom. As the rubber is pressed inwards the air pressure inside the outermost box increases making the blue box lighter causing it to rise. The blue box hits the ball back up and as the rubber returns to its original state the air pressure returns to normal causing the blue box to sink to the floor.

I understand that its not practical, ie, the blue box might not rise fast enough to hit the ball, but explain why the theory is incorrect.

>>
Why do you think increasing the air pressure in the big box would make the blue box rise?

I'm pretty sure increasing the air pressure would make the blue box stay right where it is

Has can't stay in the form of a "box", regardless. It will expand to fill the volume of its container, the partial pressure of the air is what keeps the blue box down near the floor
>>
>>8201940
nothing wrong with that theory where:

desnity of air = x
density of ball = x + e
density of block = x - e

lim(e->0)
>>
>>8201940
Wouldn't the increasing pressure compress the box too, making it denser?

But if not, then assuming no energy losses perhaps you could get that thing to oscillate forever. That's not what people usually have in mind when they're talking about perpetual motion devices (an idealized mass on a spring would be a perpetual motion device by that definition).

Hey /sci/,
Do you use linux at home or for work?
If so what distribution of linux do you use and why?

Arch linux, at home and at work, mostly because I'm a member of the AV club.

arch is for cs plebs, centos if ure serious

I use Arch for my personal computer and Debian for my server. If you're in the sciences, it's a good skill to have. If you're new to linux, I recommend installing Kubuntu in a virtualbox. I used to run Kubuntu on an old machine which is now dead (not because of Kubuntu) and it's pretty easy and slick. Since it's just Ubuntu with KDE, it's one of the easiest distributions to troubleshoot in my opinion.

Imagine a hypothetical being or "zombie" that is indistinguishable from a normal human being except in that it lacks conscious experience, qualia, or sentience. When a zombie is poked with a sharp object, for example, it does not feel any pain though it behaves exactly as if it does feel pain (it may say "ouch" and recoil from the stimulus, or tell us that it is in intense pain).
It is just as capable of problem solving, working and reproducing as a normal human.

Why aren't we all zombies?

Hey, so, I has a question. How big is the biggest neural network that wed have ever built and how does it compare to the human brain?

Also, how far can we go in terms of building a large neural network?

The largest we've roughly simulated is a cluster of ~10 neurons.

A novel hardware architecture will be needed. Even the current cluster-based computing isn't good enough and has too many problems with synchronization and latency.

I'm a senior in EE. I graduate in December. I want to get a more in depth knowledge of Calculus.

When I took Calc 1 through 4 I kind of just went through the motions. Basically, I learned a very superficial knowledge of the concepts in order to simply pass the exams. I quickly learned, however, that having an intimate knowledge of concepts like differentiation and integration. I often struggle in some of my classes to realize that something can be solved by simply integrating or differentiating due to the fact that I don't truly understand these concepts.

I feel like I have a pretty decent idea on differentiation, as it is more or less rate of change. Yet, I feel like I don't particularly understand integration at all.

Basically, I want to learn calculus all over again. What resources do you guys suggest? In my calculus classes we used Multivariable Calculus by Ron Larson. Is this a solid textbook to continue using, or is there a different book?

>tl;dr: retarded engineer wants to learn calculus better. I "learned" using Multivariable Calculus by Ron Larson. Should I continue using this book or is there a better one?

Should we start reducing the human population right now, and keep a sustainable number? How?
131 posts and 25 images submitted.
>>
>>8200157

It would be nice if we could do this, but short of me becoming a living god tomorrow and gradually massaging the number downwards over generations by sustainably limiting human procreation (the best possible method since it involves conscious, singular self-direction of a species), it ain't gonna happen. The animal is programmed to breed breed breed, as animals do, until external factors limit its growth. The animal is also programmed for intra-species competition to optimal sexual access, (among access to all resources more generally) which is a major source of human suffering in general. It seems that we must encounter another catastrophe, if one is interested in reducing the number of humans, as opposed to the more pleasant option of consciously massaging the number downwards over generations - every human is always going to try to "get ahead" of the others (intra-species competition, again), and this is, in this case anyway, exactly what fucks any effort to improve the lot of the species in toto. We need some Independence Day-tier shit to happen in order to come together as a species, and the moment it is resolved, it's back to business as usual.

OTOH maybe having a glut of humans isn't so bad. Who knows, Ebola could mutate airborne, or those antibiotics really could stop working overnight. In which cases it's better to have a 30-1% survival rate with a much larger absolute number (starting from 7.5 billion), than a much smaller absolute number.
>>
>le overpopulation maymay

Scarcity isn't caused by a lack of resources, it's caused by inefficiency in distributing the resources, you ignorant mong.

With better energy sources literally anything is possible, until we run out of surface area on earth to build structures on. That's not happening any time soon.
>>
But anon, what are you talking about? Everyone is telling me overpopulation is a myth, and that population is projected to begin to decreasing. They also say the planet can support ~14 billion...

I don't know about you, but I can't wait to watch my nice, peaceful, relatively quiet rural home, be ravaged by intense development and a massive population influx. I can't wait to be stuck in traffic all day living in a nice cement paradise with light pollution that eclipses the stars. And don't forget! The people! I can;'t wait to feel all cuddly wuddly warm and fuzzy about my new neighbors! There'll be so many people around and any one of them could be a new friend, and I'll barely be able to turn around without bumping into someone. Never alone, very neat and comfy who needs personal space, what are you an antisocial fucking weirdo? FUCK OFF.

Thanks governor Shumlin! This is just what we needed for economic development. A bunch of shitty restaurants and new massive chain stores built everywhere, and don;'t forget marketing. Why, I live right near Montpelier, and by golly by gosh would you just look and see that I can't even find a job that isn't in sales, PR, or marketing!

What a great future of the human species continuing to push itself to greater misery. All those rich people coming here and buying up overpriced real estate no one else can afford might not be happy though. The kings on the hill might lose control of the serfs and peasants they employ down below.

Sorry for the inane post but I could really use some clarification here...

the disputed question is number 17 and whether or not it is True, False, or "merely possible."

A fellow maths student and I are convinced regarding one answer but my book provides a different one so I'd like to hear /sci/'s take on it

formal logic applies so keep that in mind

after a few responses I'll let you know what the book said, you can all probably guess though

they probably wanted you to see that 17 is only possible based on statement 2 because they're stupid

is the opposition against GMOs entirely emotional and based on some vague "ethics" ?

i dont see why we should put any restrictions to genetical engineering at all i dont even see why we should not freely apply this form of engineering to better the human genome or create human-animal hybrids

so /sci/ is there any scientific argument against at least some forms of genetical engineering
