Let's say I just got shot in my leg (thigh, no bone). How do I fix my wound without going to the hospital, and without needing too many instruments and drugs? Do I have any chance to clean and close the wound without infections and whatnot?

Hi guys i'd like to share some of my lame undergrad simulations with you, I guess we could share some shit we did in this thread.
Be aware that my gifs will be pretty shitty cause I just learned how to do them.

Also they will be in portuguese because it is my main language.

The first one is a magnus effect simulation, the balls are exactly the same, except that the light blue ball has zero angular momentum while the dark one has non zero. Perspective is bad in this one.

Just pretend there is a rope linking them like in the video. The mass that starts below has 80kg while the other ones 8kg if I remember well... There is no resistive force and the rope is not rolling on the rod. I tried to set the initial conditions similar to the ones in the video.

Anyone have any recent research on the lasting effects of alcohol?

We all know extended periods of heavy drinking can lead to brain damage, and this damage can take years to be restored. What is heavy drinking though? A year of getting wasted every night? Or as little as a single week of extreme binging?

What about lighter drinking?
Is nightly red wine a myth?
Does having a single beer a night do anything harmful?
IQ?

There are studies that show a glass of wine a day is actually beneficial, so I'm sure alcohol, like almost every other edible substance, is healthy only in moderation.

I can only think of substances like lead or mercury that do damage to you without a lower limit on their concentration. These are substances that are not healthy in any amount. Alcohol is alright as long as its in moderation tho.

>What is heavy drinking though?
Defined as 5 drinks a day for males and 3 drinks a day for females.

>A year of getting wasted every night?
Defined as 5 drinks a day for males and 3 drinks a day for females.

>Or as little as a single week of extreme binging?
Defined as 5 drinks a day for males and 3 drinks a day for females.

>What about lighter drinking?
Studies go back and forth arguing garbage correlation/causality points and generally doing poor science. From my own poking around, negative affects stem from binge-ing and the accompanying "kindling" effect (google that term), as well as malnutrition. Light drinking can disturb your sleep if you have the drink immediately before sleeping, which will affect your quality of sleep (and so would translate into the same effects as shit sleep)

>Is nightly red wine a myth?
From the above, you can certainly have red wine nightly. It will probably do fuck all one way or another. Have it if you enjoy it.

>Does having a single beer a night do anything harmful?
See above.

>IQ?
It's a garbage measurement, but figure that unless you're wrecking your liver, the only negative effect would be busting up your sleep. This would affect your problem solving ability the same as sleeping like shit would in the short term.

Conclusions: Drink light, drink during the day.

P.S. It is a known and acknowledged carcinogen though.

>Defined as 5 drinks a day for males and 3 drinks a day for females.
I know you were trying to make a point, but it did not answer my question. If someone had 5 drinks one night and never drank again. Does that person now have to wait a whole year for the effects to go away?

Anyone know anything about neuroscience here?

I took on a stressful job recently, so I started playing chess online in my spare time - 20 games a day, for two weeks. A few days ago I started getting splitting headaches when I tried to play chess. Last night I woke up at 4:00 am and my brain was on fire. I thought I was having an aneurysm. I could not stop thinking/dreaming about chess. Easily the worst headache I've ever had.

I know I need to take a break, but what causes this to happen?

>Anyone know anything about neuroscience here?
no. literally no one here does. you'll just get googled answers which you can easily find yourself.
stop being lazy.
>>
>>8095632
I mostly did pharmacology/drug chemistry, but I had to take some neuroscience, I wouldn't say I really know it, though.

Anyway, this could be something like migraines (did you also notice a very heightened (to a painful degree) sensitivity to sights and sounds?). If not, it sounds like what is called a thunderclap headache (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderclap_headache). You need to go to a doctor now. Statistically, it probably isn't a subarachnoid hemorrhage (anyeurism bursting in your brain), but if it is you're fucked unless you immediately seek attention. Did you vommit? That's another sign of a SA hemorrhage. Subarachnoid hemorrhages also generally come with what are called "sentinel headaches," which are headaches that are super severe, an often happen a couple weeks or days before the hemorrhage itself. If it's stress this could be a hypertensive emergency (high blood pressure causing the pain), which is also really not fucking good.

Another possibility is cluster headaches. How old are you and have you ever smoked (tobacco)? They generally last for an hour of less and are located on one part of the head (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cluster_headache).

tl;dr: go to a doctor and get some scans if the doctor feels it's necessary.

i dont know anything technical, but I've heard that playing mental chess in excess can literally make you go insane. Google whoever has the record for most simultaneous games played mentally and you'll find some stuff on this.

What are some cancers and anti-cancers you know of?

I know that cigarettes and processed meats have been proven to cause cancer.

And I know that exercise and vegetable juice are anti-cancers.

Is there anything you would like to add to the list?

>>
>>8095451
Even fit people can get cancer, anon.
Cancer is just a mutation, you can't anti-cancer anything. You can decrease your risk by not exposing yourself to certain mutagens, but mutagens will forever always be around you.
You can also increase the chances of getting cancer by ingesting or being around mutagens, which increased the chances of a cell mutating into an immortal hellspawn that wrecks havoc upon your entire body. The chances of cancer 'cure' is probably going to impossible without a better early warning system. There's just no such thing as a "anti-cancer"
>>
>>8095451
Google "known carcinogens"
>>
>>8095482
it is an anti-cancer in that it reduces your risk. But increasing your intake of that anti-cancer to ridiculous levels doesn't make you cancer proof, no.

In science, everything is made by monkey men. Why are people so competent at some things but at the same time so utterly retarded?

I think the most maddening thing on Earth has to be anything academic that is constructed by "scientists" or similar animals.

For instance, algorithms, complexity theory, etc it is all done by utter morons I don't consider to be human.

Basically they use electromagnetic fields to propel a projectile at high hypersonic velocites, due to the laws of physics this would produce a very strong recoil effect making them impractical as hand held weapons unless you like your arm being blown off. Still the overall damage is higher than a chemically propelled projectile.
>>
>>8095193
>eletromagnetic fields
so why exactly isnt the gun firing at a constant rate? like it's a full auto thing?
i thought there was no on/off switch for magnets?
and how can it fire cosmoline?
serious question.
>>
>>8095198
The entire point of the rail gun is to rapidly turn magnets on and off, so that the projectile is attracted forward by the magnets ahead of it but not attracted bacwards by the magnets behind it.

But this, though related to No Porn recovery, deserves its own thread.

Is it possible to alter your sexual preferences with drugs?

Apparently DeltaFosB is a protein associated with addiction formation, in food, sex, drugs, and gambling. It's triggered by overconsumption (e.g. ten tabs of porn) and accumulates with repeated overconsumption. So both the experience of the tabs and their content are tagged for future cravings.

How can I induce the accumulation of DeltaFosB?

If I wanted a new internet porn fetish, I could probably give it to myself the millennial way, but I want to dial things back to vanilla 3DPD.
Forcing myself to binge on tasteful nudes would still leave the 10 tabs element to the new craving.
10 hookers would be prohibitively expensive.
Can't I just pop a DFB pill with some homely tinder pickup and create a craving for vanilla sex in the missionary position?

Also, this kpop has a tear in her leggings. I should not be able to notice that.

It's come to my attention that a hormone called Vasopressin influences male sexual decisiveness.
It's that very distinctive "zero-ing in" feeling just before the clothes come off, and it comes in a nasal spray!
If I took vasopressin (or its synthetic, desmopressin) and a dopamine stimulator before a sexual encounter, I predict the encounter would take place on the counter, or possibly kitchen table. It sounds like the perfect cocktail for a studly demeanour.

What does /sci/ think of this UFO footage?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGIH7ufiBII

The full film with frame by frame analysis is at 2:45

You all always say that you can't take UFOs seriously because there's no footage, well there's loads but being 2016 and all it's mostly fake which is why I never post it. However this one was shot in 1950 and analyzed by many organizations over the years

The story behind it is
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariana_UFO_incident
>Baseball manager, Nick Mariana and girlfriend inspecting baseball field before game
>Both see two rotating silvery discs flying at around 200-400 mph horizontally
>He happens to have a 16mm camera in his car boot, runs to get it
>Captures 16 seconds
>Shows footage to locals, they're amazed
>A local reporter hears about it and informs Wright-Patterson Air Force Base
>They call Mariana in for an interview
>USAF experts quickly look at film and say it's just two F-94 jets
>Mariana is angry however, he claims they removed the first few frames that showed the rotation
>Locals who saw it before the USAF agree
>USAF deny saying they only damaged by accident and removed one frame
>In 1952 the head of the USAF's official investigation feels the film wasn't studied enough and asks for it again
>Mariana reluctantly agrees so long as they promise not to remove any frames
>USAF looks at it again
>They retract their original explanation, jets weren't anywhere near the area at the time, light is too steady to be a reflection
>Douglas Aircraft Company, University of Colorado, UCLA, University of Arizona scientists all later look at film and agree the jet explanation doesn't quite fit
>Unexplained to this day, now in National Archives.

My initial personal view upon seeing the footage was that it was obviously aircraft judging by the speed and level flight. However seeing as the USAF themselves ruled that out I'm mystified. They do indeed look pretty disc-shaped.
