I feel like Physical Engineering doesn't get mentioned enough in here. I plan on entering it next year. What do you people think of it? Isn't it cool that you learn physics but also get a job that's not sitting on a chair with your head between your hands?

/sci/, Im at a loss, I just watched a documentary of the Twin Towers and the impossible physics behind their collapse.

Is it true a building that tall 546m, was able to collapse that fast within 6 seconds?

I need help understanding the dynamics of the collapse. How is it possible, it cannot be recreated on floor models.

No this is not some meme, I want serious discussion.

Plus, how in the ever living hell could the Steel infrastructure of the Towers collapse so fast under oxygen choked heat?

7 KB,
Can anybody point me to a fairly accessible book on Bayesian statistics?

I've been really into statistics and probability lately, but I'm not really sure I have enough background to dive right into any relatively advanced textbook, so I'd preferably like something that's fairly digestible.

Krusche's book using R is good because you're actually doing the calculations as you go and building complexity. I think it's called doing bayesian data analysis.

Bayesianism is a meme. Every scientist uses hypothesis tests.

I thought about a possible way to work around the odds of the lottery and make them lose money. There are probably many many numbers chosen multiply by many people, that are all failing numbers but contribute to the pot. At the same time, there can be no two winners at the same time, but since the odds are heavily stacked against individual people anyway, this outcome is unlikely.

>Formulate a website where the people can display the numbers that they've chosen
>others know to pick another number instead

Okay, let me ask something related:
Why are geometric theories singled out in the first place?
Why are theories with axioms that have more complicated quantifier structure not captured as easily?

I'm not a scientist but I'm fascinated with Mars. Recently I was thinking of the issue of terraforming Mars, that even if we dumped millions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere we would still have to deal with radiation and losing that atmosphere to space because it has a very weak magnetic field.

What I was thinking was if would be possible to have a bunch of satallites with strong magnets inside orbit the planet to simulate one? Would this actually work or is it too expensive? Or maybe I'm making assumptions about magnets that are wrong.
2 replies and 1 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>7781766
The biggest false assumption you make of magnets is their strength over distances. The strength of a magnetic field due to a magnetic charge is inversely proportional to the distance from the charge squared (r^-2). Not to mention even if you got strong enough magnetic charges, on these satellites, you could never keep them in orbit. Also, this wouldn't create anything even remotely similar characteristically to the magnetic field that our planet has.

So no your idea is batshit retarded and you don't...

If you're worried do Chem+ChemE

In terms of pixels, that's an exceedingly large image for a periodic table which contains relatively little information and is significantly out of date.

Not chem here (math) but it's kind of cool that the seventh row will have everything completely and officially named by the time you start studying, anon. I can remember a time when "unununium" (nice word) was common.

Anyone know anything about bioinformatics/computational biology? I might get a research gig this summer in it but I'm debating whether it's worth learning Perl. Is it alright for someone who otherwise hates biology?

There were several textbooks on computational biophysics recommended in the textbook thread, other than the ones posted on the wiki. But since you're being such a little bitch about it I'm not going to repost it, go find it in the catalog yourself.

>>7781393
Asking whether to learn Perl or not is such a stupid fucking question. It's completely irrelevant, ask the research group you want...
