Is Euclid's elements something worth reading for someone interested in the history of mathematics and science, or is it just a waste of time?
>>8052278
Depends why you want to read it.
It is one of the most widely read texts in human history for a reason. Any serious student of mathematics should read it at least once. Enjoy.

So is Twilight.
which is smarter, a criminal mastermind like el chapo who applied intelligence in the real world or a phd in physics/mathematics?

hard to say. Don Guzman pretty smart dude. I wonder if he applied his thinking to math where he would be.
maybe mochizuki could have been head of yakuza or something if he no-lifed that instead of pure math.

Interesting idea. But people would complain that much more about muh ivory towers
And we wouldn't be able to come up with new jargon for our subject, right? That seems like a pretty big barrier
>>8052056
You can invent new words in Latin, biologists do it all the time for naming animals, for example.
Does anyone else find Gödel's incompleteness theorems depressing?
what is it ?

Basically that there is no way to define arithmetic (and thus almost all other forms of mathematics) through a series of axioms (e.g. Peano arithmetic) and be sure that the system is consistent.
Browsing through /sci, I can't help but notice all the talk about a certain hierarchy among majors, how certain majors are better than others, etc. When I contrast this to /lit or /his, which is where I usually browse, there's not nearly as much of this. While, obviously, /sci is a board that encompasses a wider variety of majors, and this is fucking 4chan so what did I expect, why is it that STEM people in particular tend to be so obsessed with this shit? I notice even in my uni that there happens to be this sort of hierarchy among STEM people and it's pretty...

first off i have only encountered the hiearchy on sci
second off it's because sci can
either people truthfully believe in it or just want to piss other people off

bish I wrote all dat
When are Fourier series taught? I just finished Calc III (or multivariable calculus) and I have never even heard one of my professors mention it. I'm taking differential equations over the summer but I don't think Fourier series has much to do with differential equations.
>>8051564
you'll see it in sig proc if you take it.
>>8051564
FS were developed to solve differential equations
fourier analysis is so cool man
it took me like 4 years to understand the power of it wow it's cool
Are the stresses of academia making you bald?

Nope. My genes are.

Prematurely grey, but that could just be life in general.
Just going grey at 22. But I've known it was going to happen since I was a child from looking at my father. Im ok with it and almost kinda like it?

yeah, if i ever get cancer, ill be sure to get to my topologists office and use real analysis to cure me

A doctor might not cure your cancer either.

Yeah, a biofag will definitely help with your cancer.

General Energy Thread
Is there any way to generate energy under these circumstances?
-Below 100 meters (328 feet) under ground
-No use of underground waterways
-No use of Geothermal pipes
-No wind or sunlight access
-Unlimited cost
Imagine everything must be contained in lets say a concrete box...
If not, lead me in the right direction, I am exploring thermoelectric plates currently.
Any Ideas?
Thermoelectric sounds good.. I don't know if you can due to the temperature variance though, not enough... What wattage are you looking to get down there OP
>>8051098
Whatever may be possible, and I do believe this is a limitation factor, I just need starting ideas...
>-Unlimited cost
Go nuclear bby.
What does /sci/ think about an artificial digestive system?
Replacing most of the human system with an artificial one that requires already broken down nutrition pills and removes all hunger signals to the brain.
Awful idea. I like eating and pooping and I won't let anyone take that away from me.
>>8051034
I'd love it, I eat too much to handle stress. This would significantly save my time and help rid me of my grotesque addiction
Would only ingesting water-soluble food molecules that the body uses make pooping obsolete? Is there any biological reason to keep pooping if a person only ingests highly curated food molecules?
Hello /sci/, HS Senior here, and I shamefully admit that I am completing my HS career with Pre-Calculus. I have been at least one or two math classes behind my peers for as long as I can remember, but I'm always the best in my math classes. I grasp concepts easily and always have the mathematical intuition that is required to excel in my courses, but alas, I am...behind. My question to you is: Will I survive a Physics/Electrical Engineering double major? They are my passion, and I enjoy studying the concepts that I have the mathematical tools to ascertain and learn. I have...

As long as you place into calculus, you should be fine
I suppose you will be fine, as long as you are confident in your ability to learn the abstract concepts involved. Have you taken AP Physics or AP Chemistry at all. I would see how you how you like something that requires a little more rigor before you decide majoring into 2 difficult subjects.
I apologize for my atrocious english, I am German

Why does /sci/ think that psychology is bullshit?
Because the axiom of choice disproves free will

Because it is

>bullshit
Such strong language OP. We don't think that at all.
It's simply not a framework for generating and testing hypotheses, therefore it isn't science. It isn't invalid, it isn't a waste of funding, and it isn't never worth discussing, but it does all boil down to analysis of statistics and correlations.
Although to be perfectly fair, sometimes people do create hypotheses relevant to the field of psychology and they do carry out a rigorous...
