my brain is having autist moment. can anyone help me out with these instructions:
Several intervals can be combined into one region using the "set union" operation, ∪, which is represented as "U" in WeBWorK. For example, [-2,0] U (8,inf) represents the points from −2 to 0 together with everything bigger than 8.
Write the set of points from −5 to 3 but excluding −2 and 3 as a union of intervals
[-5,-3]U[-1,2]U(4,inf)

that was wrong

no u
GIMPS just found the new largest discovered prime number. This was all done on an i7, not a supercomputer. Imagine if we looked for it on Tainhe-2, or even an advanced beowulf cluster? Why the hell don't they, is it not worth the recognition or the prize money?
>>7799070
What's the prize money?
>>7799081
$3000
Who is going to fund that shit?
Nobody gives a shit about large primes, even the RSA numbers are not even close to being that big, why would anyone fund using supercomputers for searching for large primes, when there's other interesting computational problems to solve in other domains? Like molecular biology.
Number theory autism just isn't that interesting, anon.
Im looking for a computer software with forecast computer models for the weather and one I can input my own data and do climate research on without a commercialized weather channel or accuweather getting in my way im talking real science, anyone know of such a thing? Something kinda like what boss would use to predict storms?

Hey /sci/
Serious question here - how do I prepare for mathematical competitions like Putnam if I'm in high school?

Curious behind the logistics of donating plasma. Does it harm your body at all donating for awhile? (Twice/week?)
>>7798882
New plasma is made inside of your bones. Probably not that bad as long as you don't over do it.
If you feel weak, or might be getting sick, maybe hold off for a while.
As far as I know there's no reason not to do it, there is immense benefit to sick people who need plasma.
>>7798882
Yes. Do not donate anynof your bodily fluids. Especially blood or plasma, don't ask just don't.
How long should I be able to spend on a mentally challenging task (e.g. hard maths problems) before I take a break?
If professors do such cutting edge and intellectual and creatively demanding work, how do they manage it with schedules filled with teaching, marking, and administrative shit?

You're not supposed to stop, but being a retard can't be help as mental faculties are 100% genetic.
Are there any actual studies that shows depression hits losers the hardest?
>>7798752
Nope, but for sure it doesn't hit the winners.
>>7798752
Well, does it?
>>7798814
Yes it does.
I want a radical, futuristic monk government. Let's eliminate corruption by only electing politicians who voluntarily give up wealth and privacy for a sizable term. I'm want them to live modestly and to lifecast 24/7. I'm willing to do so.
Sounds extreme, right? Well I believe in Kurzweil's Singularity and that we are right at the cusp of immortality and a level of civilization never fathomed by human imagination. And I damn well don't want to miss it by a decade or so. I want Kurzeil to see it.
Political corruption is inefficiency. At...

This is copypasta. Nice try, though.
Does anyone have a digital copy of the third edition of Calculus by Rogawski?
nigga its a calculus textbook you can use any of the 6 million different ones
>http://gen.lib.rus.ec/search.php?req=calculus+rogawski&lg_topic=libgen&open=0&view=simple&phrase=1&column=def
You're outta luck. Maybe you can use the second edition.
I need help please. I'm trying to find a formula that would generate all possible combinations of 5 numbers that range from 0 to 6 and add up to 16 or 17. For example 0+3+3+4+6=16 or 1+2+3+5+6=17. Then I need all numbers from 0 to 9 that when added equal 18 and 28. for example, 0+0+0+9+9=18 or 5+0+9+5+9=28 Thank you in advance
>>7798740
create a dataset from 0 to 99999.
create variables for each digit.
apply tests to drop all those that do not satisfy your conditions.
It's not that efficient but that's easy.
You can even do that in excel.
Anyone read Laws of Form? Was it fascinating? Revolutionary? Waste of time?
pic unrelated
Never heard of it but
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laws_of_Form#Sentential_logic
reminded me of PIerce's diagrammatic logic (It's hard to find good resources on this).

Looks like the Boolean algebra...
That function fails the vertical line test
My fucking brother is under the impression that, ignoring the factor of air pollution, that Chinese people are generally smaller than normal people because the Chinese population is so large and densely-populated that they don't have as much oxygen to breathe collectively among themselves, and that this is the case of all highly-populated areas, such as New York or London.
How valid is his theory?
>>7798594
pretty retarded, there wasn't always a billion of them
>>7798594
Aren't Asiatic people shorter in general, though?
Hey /sci/, just passing by but I have a very simple question for you. Fucking plants, how do they work?
How do they react to changes in weather? How does a fucking plant twist itself completely in a day just to get more sunlight? How does a tree decide where to grow a new branch? How to deal with injuries?
I think I'm missing something very basic here and I would like to fix it.
Shit, man, people are spending their whole lives on that shit, I don't think you'll find a satisfactory answer here
>>7798513
Honestly, I would be grateful even for some book or article recommendations. This shit is killing me, but I don't even know where to start. Botany is a field I know next to nothing about.
>>7798504
That's a lot of questions and some parts of them are still not fully understood. What I can tell you is a bit about how does the tree know where to grow a branch from my classes some years ago. When the shoot (think branch) of the plant grows, there are certain chemicals called auxins that cause a response called phototropism in the plant, basically causing the branch to bend closer to the light. I think it works by detecing a lot of light in a certain part of the branch, and then concentrating (moving) closer...

That should explain things.

x y z
1 -1 0 d
-1 0 2 d
.5 .5 -1 d
It reduced to:
x y z
1 0 0 4d
0 1 0 3d
0 0 1 5d/2

I end up with
x y z
1 0 0 d^2
0 1 0 3d
0 0 1 -d+d^2
What am I doing wrong? Can someone explain the steps?
