Sc/out/s,

Next spring I'm going to help teach a class on wilderness survival. It's at a middle school and will take place over nine weeks with three 1 1/2 hour classes per week culminating in a camp out where they'll have to find a good campsite, start primitive fires, build shelters, set traps, and find water. I should be able to get these kids up to about a First-Class scout level pretty quickly but I'm coming to you with a request.

If you read the subject you'll see what I need your help with. I've only spent two weeks total in...

2 weeks survival experience...? Uhh, being honest op you are find fucked. I myself have been a trapper for 8 years and a hunter for 8 years since I was young very young. What kind of primitive skills? Location? type of forest? type of skills/things you will be teaching? Books I'd recommend The Sas survival book.
>>
Just make a list of questions/what you are doing with them.
>>
>>769319
I've been camping regularly for over fifteen years but I've only spent two weeks out with only a knife and rope. So I'm not fucked.

I'll be teaching them the things you mentioned plus identifying edibles, navigation, signaling, fire making/building, making char cloth, building traps, hunting, identifying flint and the basics of knapping, knots/lashings, finding/purifying water, knife/axe technique, shelter building, first-aid. Stuff like that.

Hey /out/, I'm looking to get a new pack, preferably 65-85L. Whilst browsing the internet I found several "Teton Sports" backpacks that run relatively cheap and scored well on Amazon.

I'm skeptical because I've never heard of the brand and it seems too cheap. Does anyone have any experience with the brand? Pic related is a 65L bag that runs for $60 CAD.

don't get the biggest one, i have the mid sized one, the "3400" I used it for almost a year of hitchhiking and its held up great! I highly recommend it, it's actually a really high quality pack.

Good to hear. I'm looking at the second and third largest ones, which are 75+10L and 65L.
>>

I've got the 3400, not terrible but I'm not going to stay in it for long. Doesn't really fit my torso and others have also reported it being small for them.

Dear /out/ I work in a school and since the boss knows I'm into /out/ and stuff she wants me to make some sort of desert island survival workshop or something of the sort. Any ideas of little projects for kids? It has to be completed in under 1 hour, be something that they can take home and it has to take into account that parents will loose their shit if I show them how to sacrifice to the gods a bunny and then proceed to skin it (honestly they'll probably loose their shit if I show them how to use a knife properly).
My ideas so far are:
Alcohol stove

While i appreciate you trying to do something /out/ related with the kids this sounds like a liability lawsuit waiting to happen to matter what you do.

Are you a teacher or otherwise educated in handling kids?
Consider risks involved in each project, injury, allergies or like you said how the parents will react to it.
Also what age group are the kids in?

For one thing i would never consider the alcohol stove with kids, too much potential for injury.
>>
>>768423
I understand what you say. I'm only gonna do the alcohol stove as a preview of the workshop, they aren't going to be handling the cans themselves. I do have training and experience in both /out/ and /in/ teaching. I did take into consideration the allergies and injuries and all that... that is precisely why is it so hard to think of stuff, because there aren't many things you can do without a knife.
Parents are more relaxed, cos it's Europe, but as you said I still want to make sure it's...

I think you are on the right track with fishing nets or basketry, very little that can go wrong in a bad way.
Tomahawks is probably a bad idea even with a soft headpiece, handle is probably still going to be wood and the fact that the head is soft might actually make them hit each other with them.

/out/, I need help. tl;dr I want books about ecology and similar topics.

My 15 year old brother is currently very invested in the outdoors and is convinced he wants to be some form of park ranger or ecologist. That's cool, but he's even fast tracking his high school to get out at 16 and begin college. He's outstandingly smart and dedicated, so I can't stop that decision, but I want to at least make sure he really cares about and understands the implications of beginning a life as an ecologist/preservationist/whatever he becomes.

We go hiking,...

Its a little walk to get there but if you know where to look, you can go home with bags full of fossils and bones.

What does /out/ think of Zippos? Recently got myself one, as well as a 12oz zippo fluid can for 6$ and a lot of 6 wicks and 40 flints for 7$. The flame doesn't seem as concentrated as a bic, but its reliable and burns really hot and is truly windproof. The zippo itself cost me 11$ on amazon.

They're fun to use but the fact that the fluid evaporates over time kills it for me. I just bring bics with me innawoods, works better.
>>
>>767719
I never heard that the fluid evaporates. How would it evaporate more than say lighter fluid in a bic?
>>
>>767714
I carry a Zippo, a firerod and two fresnel lenses as EDC. The one tool I CAN NOT count on in the wilderness is the Zippo. Being windproof and lighting reliably is indeed a huge plus but you'll find you have to refuel it every few days ( not a lot fuel, mind you ) and if you manage to get lost for more than that you'll find yourself wishing you had a bic or other forms of fire. By flooding/soaking my Zippo's innards I did manage to get it to go two weeks without refueling but you'll still be better...

Anyone ever see planets through a telescope before? I've seen Saturn and Jupiter when camping before and It's mindblowing to see it in "in person" rather than through pictures.

Pretty crazy to see in irl and confirm to yourself that such planets actually exist and aren't really just part of picture books you read as a child.

Yeah, during my childhood summers my uncle would visit and bring his telescope. Our property was very rural so we had no light pollution at all. Seeing the planets through the scope was very humbling. I can only image the wonder some of the first telescope craftsman felt.
>>
>>767481
No, I just bought a telescope though and hope to see some cool stuff with it. It's not the best but it's what I could afford. Tried it in my backyard and didn't see much, maybe there was too much light out. Street lights, and there is a church behind my place with what seems like some kind of world record parking lot light collection. I will take it with me when I go camping next time though.

went hiking this past weekend to one of the many trails in Angeles NF. As i drove past Mt. Wilson i see smoke on the side of road and suddenly realize its a fucking forest fire. Didn't hesitate to look for a turn out i stopped in the middle of the highway and emptied out my 3 liters of my only drinking water. As i ran to put the fire out there was another guy trying to put it out by throwing dirt on it, fire was just getting bigger. the fire was spreading fast, if i would have drove back to park properly the forest would be burned by now. i feel like a fucking hero and...

Get the fuck away from it, as fast as possible.
There are professionals who handle these types of things, better let them do it.
Unless we are talking a very small fire not much more than 2-3 meters in diameter, then i might try to put it out, but only if i have a safe escape route like a road or something nearby that i can use if it starts spreading too quickly.

I have once tried to put out a fire in a dry forest and it...

Hey /out/,

Me and my friends are going on a working holiday to Scotland next month and I'm gonna be hiking, camping, and maybe doing a little caving for the first time in my life. I'm really trying to budget here and don't want to fork out for anything I don't need.

Since experience isn't on my side I was hoping you guys could tell me from experience what the absolute essentials are for hiking and caving and camping are and what I could do without to save money.

Hi fellow /out/ers. I want to do something fun for my birthday this year so I thought I'd take a minimalistic survival training class. The program I'm currently looking at is 3 days 2 nights and costs $375. I've done plenty of primitive camping before, but never without a tent or food reserves. I'm wondering if you guys have ever participated in a wilderness class, and if so what was your experience like? Also, anyone know of programs like this, but for hunting. I'm in the South Florida area.

Looking at getting a hammock for my girlfriend who has been obsessing with hammocks for weeks now.
Will be used primarily for recreational use, just hanging out with a book, maybe taking a nap, but if we really like it, we'll take it out camping this summer, so I don't want a rainbow hammock like pic related.
I'm considering the ENO DoubleNest, which I've heard lots of people sing high praises for, but others hate.
Also Grand Trunk Double (one website rated it the best double), and Kammok Roo (which is more expensive, but supposedly higher quality).

No ive only cooked with fires while /out/ before

Seems at first glance that solid fuel is cheaper and more compact then alcohol, and more durable. Alcohol stoves always striked me as really easy to break
