So this coming Sunday rather than an hero I'm going to quit my job and go on a cross country trip. So starting in lower Alabama heading out west, what are some places that I should go, also what do I need to bring along. I'll allow y'all to live vicariously through me.
Pic related is how south Alabama I'm talking, need a change of scenery.

Hey /out/ I'm looking for a fixed blade sheath knife with a leather wrapped handle like pic related for EDC. Only problem is my state only allows the legal carry of a knife with a blade length of 3" or less. I cant find a knife like this with a blade that size online or in any local stores. Can anyone help a fellow /out/doorsman out and point me in the direction of a company that makes a decent fixed knife of this size?

I drink every night to deal with my demons and get to sleep, except when I'm out. Zero alcohol. Need to be sharp since I hike and camp alone. Never understood the people that go out to get wasted. What's the point?

As a Scot I quite like the broom. It's a native species. Now if you were an Amerifat complaining about it sure because at that point its' invasive.

I'm sure this varies state to state but what are the rules for fishing in creeks that are surrounded by private property? Can you stand or walk along the creek bank and fish or must you be in the water at all times?
10 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Also can you access the water near where it passes under a street? I know the road commission/county has an easement 33 feet from the center of the road but that doesn't also make it a public access doesn't it?
>>
You can get into any body of water as long as it goes under a bridge/is close to a public road I think, just walk as closely as possible to the road and access. I'm not quite sure about the walking along the creek bank, unless the waterline is clearly above the river I would just stick to wading.
>>
Just looked at the DNR for my state and yeah the 33 feet thing does make it public access - http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/fishing/documents/questions/StreamAccessRoadROW.pdf

also found this -

The law passed in 2001
Effective September 1, 2001, people using these waterways will, for the most part, have to return to the old "keep your feet wet" test, as created by the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Members of the public may use any exposed shore area of a stream without the permission of the riparian (i.e., landowner) only if it is necessary to exit the body of water to bypass an obstruction. In addition, a member of the public may not enter the exposed shore area except:
from the water,
from a point of public access on the stream, or
with the permission of the riparian (i.e., landowner).

What do you guys drink when you are /out/? I'm going camping with a girl I like and I was thinking of getting wine or something to drink with her. Do you guys have any recommendations on what should I get? Is wine okay?

I Like to drink Herb liquors Like Jagermeister or a good Scotch when /Out/
>>
I drink when I'm stuck /in/ out of boredom. If I was going to drink /out/ I would drink whiskey because it's less to carry for the same buzz.

Wine is fine, girls like wine, maybe get something like this so you don't have to carry the empty bottle around

Pastis

It's not heavy to hike in since it's 40° and you're supposed to mix it jsut with cold water, which makes it hazy. Not everybody likes the taste though, i personally love it.

A massive sombrero. No joke. They are awesome for gardening/farming. (Pic related, is mine.) Be warned, it is hard as hell to find one that doesn't look completely stupid. Most this large have "MEXICO" written across them in massive colorful letters, are made of foam, have that pointy cone in the center, and/or tassels and bells.

I was going to give a reply similar to yours and then I actually googled it and only found what would be "an overwhelming mess" to sift through. It might be easier for you than for he or I though if you know more about steels than we do and/or because your personal results ( google personalizes them based on the machine's search history ).

I've always wanted to try whaling. How do I get started? Can I just go to Norway/Iceland/Japan and ask to be a part of the next whaling expedition?

Whaling is not something you should aspire to do. I've seen countless videos of it and always felt great regret that we as a species do this.

Pride that we can do it (love being top of the food chain) but pride tinged with sadness. Whales do have emotions and are self aware. They seem almost sentient, and they have enough problems with what we do to our oceans without being actively run down (swam down?) and killed.

>inb4 hippy

Conservation is a fundamental /out/ principle that every outdoorsman worth his salt should adhere to. Whales are under threat and that's something to consider.

That being said, joining a hunt isn't going to mean any more whales are being killed than the hunt would already harvest, so if you want the experience you may as well. It's not for me though, it would feel morally wrong.

In my experience any boat crew is always happy to have extra hands, they will probably take you on board if you offer.

Your local Golden Corral would probably be the best place to start

I am thinking of doing a trip to Yellowstone. I don't have any travel buddy so it would be by myself. Would it be a bad idea to ditch the buddy system and backpack solo? Would bears be something I'd need to worry about (even if I have bear mace)? What about wolves?

My only other real backpacking experience is on the Appalachian Trail, I was alone but there were always other people on the trail so I never went more than a few hours without seeing people. Are there any trails in Yellowstone that would be popular enough (weekdays in June) that I would at least not be completely isolated if anything did happen?

I have AT in a few weeks and was thinking about waterproofing my notes with clear duck tape. We'll be out in the woods and I want to keep some stuff free of water, sweat and dirt and figured wrapping them in tape would do. Is this a good idea?
16 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
packing tape>clear duct tape

it's thinner, clearer, glossier, smoother, no strings, doesn't smoosh/fray at the edges...

that's how i laminate my notes for mountaineering trips.
>>
>>765339
Why not just go to Kinkos or something? Shouldn't cost more than a few bucks.

Otherwise packing tape.
>>
>>765355
>kinkos

in my experience under heavy use proper laminate separates. though it has the advantage of not having seams that can let a little water in sometimes.

Go to you local outdoor shop and try on some trail shoes like the ones on the right in your pic. All the major brands have gortex variants of their trail running shoes so consider that if you live in an area that gets a lot of rain.

Look for vibram soles
>>

pretty much this
i refuse to use hiking shoes w/o vibram soles
