Hey /out/
So I am looking to get back into biking and was wondering if anyone could help me out. I used to bmx in my teen years and got pretty good. I had a Diamondback with a lot of custom parts. It got stolen so I quit at age 17.
I'm 22 now and really want to get back into that world, partly to lose some weight but mostly just to get me out of my apartment. There are some amazing street places within a minute ride from my place.
The last time I rode was almost 6 years ago. I hear a lot has changed with modern bmx bikes. My question is- what is a good...

Looking for maps I can install on my Garmin GPS that would allow for turn by turn routing of hiking trails in the Rockies. Does such a thing exist? Haven't found it yet, and not about to shell out stupid amounts of money to buy the 24k maps from Garmin.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Coleman camp fuel?
Also I am aware this is a dual fuel stove but I read gasoline can gum up the generator.
>>762944
> Is there a cheaper alternative to Coleman camp fuel?
I don’t believe so, it’s pretty much just a low octane gasoline without the additives mandated for car fuel.
I see Wal-Mart has it for $12.55 per gallon and while that’s quite a bit more then gasoline, are you really using so much Coleman fuel that the increased cost is an issue?
> I read gasoline can gum up the generator.
I’d think if you’re burning thru that much fuel, then the issue of additives in gasoline is an acceptable maintenance cost in regards to the price.
>>762944
>it’s pretty much just a low octane gasoline
No, not at all. There's no gasoline in the product. It's a mixture of cyclohexane, nonane, octane, heptane, and pentane.
In the dual fuel stoves, you don't have to worry about gumming up the generator. It will ventually happen but it will take years and even then, you can sometimes manage to clean it out using carburetor cleaner. The whole "gasoline gums up the generator" issue was when there was lead added...

can i poke a hole in the top and bottom of my sleeping bag and run my hammock through it?
instead of messing around with an underquilt or a sleeping pad in my hammock, can i save some weight/bulk and use the bottom of my bag as it is? i figure using a bridge style hammock is best, as the holes will only need to be the diameter of the rope
just use a sleeping pad holy fuck
>>762266
yes you can. lots of people do it. overall it's a very elegant solution to the problem of ensconcing yourself in warmth while in a hammock
>>762286
neat! any links? i'd like to see someone else's setup before taking scissors to my bag all willy nilly
What are the best resources to learn practical skills, survival skills and become adaptable to most environments?
Is pic related enough?
Generally speaking, what resources and approach would you recommend to someone who wants to become as self-sufficient and resourceful as possible?

Recommend me a budget 1 person tent plox
>>761581
https://www.rei.com/product/827809/rei-passage-1-tent the passage 1 could do your job
Or if your budget is bigger, the Quarter Dome 1 https://www.rei.com/product/862421/rei-quarter-dome-1-tent
I have a half dome, which is the same thing as the quarter dome just for two people. It works great and I haven't had an issue since I got it in 2009. I've even camped with it on Longs Peak.

What does /out/ use for filtering their water? I am into whitewater canoe tripping and up untill now I have just been using other people water pumps but I want to get my own. One of my friends has a life straw and seems to like it but they seem like a meme. Also I've been looking at the gravity powered ones where it just drains through a filter. What do you use?
I use a sawyer mini. I have literally no idea what the reasoning behind those massive, delicate pump filters is when you have options like the mini. It's super lightweight, super inexpensive, and takes up almost no space in your pack. Plus the water bags are super useful. You can take multiple with you because they weigh practically nothing, and if you're going through a dry area you can fill them all up and filter the water as you need it.
I know I sound like a sawyer shill right now but I really just have no idea why people would continue buying those ungainly...

Everyone will say sawyer mini. They are cheap and effective i will give them that. And i do have one in my truck as a backup. But I use a first need. They are fairly expensive and heavy but they filter down to the smallest particles that any portable filter can.
How are those platypus gravity filters?
How do you go about starting an adventure?
You see these people going all over the world and posting pictures of themselves in nice landscapes or camping in these exotic places in new zealand or something. I've always been an indoors type and this kind of freedom and independence is really attractive -- but how do you do it? How do you even begin? How do you get to this place and what do you even do? Just bring a backpack and a tent?
>>760262
Most of those people you see either have wealthy parents, or partners.
Me personally I just keep a backpack ready with some gear in my car and just hit the road for the mountains/woods when the urge strikes me on my days off.
Being in Central California has some merits. But not many.
Start by thinking about what you want to do. Make a list if you must. Consider your limits, and don't be afraid to start small. Even shit like 2 hour hikes on a well established train. Build up your...

No doubt about that; just a plane ticket is expensive.
But do you or do these people generally follow established routes? Do they just google "scenic hiking trails", take the nearest bus there, and then take a bunch of pictures?
>>760262
You just fucking do it. Plane trip from Boston to Iceland is $100, get on it senpai.
Starting a new thread because I don't want to hijack Algeria Anon's. Just posting a few photos of Morocco because it's an 11/10 /out/ country that deserves more love from hikers. Populated by the nicest people on earth, too.
Can't remember if I've posted these here before.

The mountains are pretty densely populated but that's a good thing imo because you don't have to carry much food and can sleep on anyone's floor.
You know OP, I knew a guy from Morocco in Boston (shopkeeper where I would frequent) and he told me all about it one day because he was visiting for the first time in years. He piqued my interest enough to look into it out of curiosity and I was pretty impressed. Place is really noice, and the culture has proper Berber/Carthaginian roots without too much Roman/Moor/etc pollution. Fucking great food too.
Anyway, for like 10 years I've wanted to visit Morocco.
>>759982
Yeah, the more morocco tries to cosy up to the pan-Arabic world, the more shitty things get. The berbers are at the heart of the moroccan self-assertion movement, because Arabisation will also mean the death of their language and culture. Right now the language is not considered endangered, but that's probably what they said about Gaelic 100 years ago.
Howdy /out!/ /k/ calling.
We're going to be having a meetup near Quincy, CA that I think you folks would be all over.
This meetup site includes an abandoned mine and ghost town, a nice lake a short hike away, and beautiful scenery,
some of which we've already seen just two weeks ago during a scouting trip comprised of /k/ and /o/ regulars.
Most buildings are serviceable and we plan to use some for shelter overnight, this town was only abandoned in the 50s.
Date will be June 30th to July 2nd, with carpool convoys happening on Friday and...

Hey /out/, looking at getting a new rigging knife. It will only be used for cutting rope .5"-3" in diameter, so it won't need a spike or a shackle ring. I was hoping that any of you who are mariners or just casuals could recommend something to me. I'd prefer fixed blade and something that is going to last me a while.
Swiss Army, SOG, and Gerber fanboys need not reply.
Pic related what I'm looking at right now.
>>756083
tell me how will you cut the rope, while hanging, holding it in hands or on ground/other surface?if hanging,i recommend you a plain edge knife,if rope in hands, a serrated hawkbill will be great, and also a plain and a bit curved edge for a rope laying on ground/surface
>>756083
Either get a Esee if you can afford it, amazing knives or a Ka-Bar BK7 if you cant afford the Esee

Dumbass.
Algerian here, would like to hear your opinions on my country. How /out/ is it from 1 to 10.
for me I'd give it an 8 with the Sahara. Since there are lots of uninhabited mountains, steppes, Chaparrals, woods, savannas and desert and most of the population either lives on Algiers or in small towns. Plus there are abandoned french towns which make urban exploration fun.

i expected this answer but alright. I'll just give you two keywords. Atlas mountains and Sahara desert.

I thought it was an Eastern Yuro country too, but I'm 'Murrican. It's just west of that pyramid country, right?

I usually carry 2 bars, one of which I mark with the word BALLS in red marker. This goes on, you guessed, my balls, ass, dick area. The other is used for the thighs and spots where my pack straps ride.
