I'm a pretty skilled swimmer so no stories to tell.
>>
There was a river near me I used to swim in when I was 10 or 12, real choppy area, i remember jumping in and being carried down the river hitting every single rock on the way, it was fun, but nothing dangerous, I was a young child at the time and could handle it. Recently some swimmer died in that same area of the river, he was in his twenties.
Sometimes its hard to believe fairly harmless waters can be fatal, but it happens, a lot more than you think.
>>
The ocean is still the best. I don't mind a nice river swim but nothing is like the raw power of the ocean. I used to live in Hawaii and while I was there I did two 2.4 mile swims, on on the North Shore and the other one across Waikiki. Also did several shorter ones.

The ocean is the best.

All of it, all the way to Baxter's Peak.

What should I know?

Buddy and I took a 16ft aluminium canoe from Kentucky all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Was a really insane 3 months. Ohio river connects to Tennesee River, which connects to the Tombigee River which will spit yoy out into Mobile, Alabama. I swear we almost died of dehydration like 10 times. Also had to carry canoe for miles sometimes due to parts we could not navigate. We had mapped the entire route so we knew that these blockages and dams existed but man, that is really really hard. To our complete shock and surprise fish and game and coast guard never once bothered us, surprising because we had only a few hundred dollars and would fish for basically all of our food. Really a truly great time. We abandoned the canoe in Mobile on the coast of the gulf, seriously just way too many black people to have something of value with us, plus it gave us a lot more mobility to leave it. We hitched back to Paducah, Kentucky after that. I suggest, if you have a best friend, go on an amazing adventure with them.

A treated-plywood jon-boat would probably cost about $120 to make.

Cheap kayaks are around $180.

The book price of an old fiberglass runabout is literally $0; the only value they have is whatever an outboard motor on them is worth. No motor=no value.
>>
>>764910
Boat wright here..

getting a boat for free, is an amazing feeling. no motor, no problem. anything from 12-30 foot you can use any gasoline/diesel engine from car or truck, transmission or direct drive. turning a boat meant for outboard, to inboard, is basically fiberglass, plywood, resin, some screws, a few hinges, the motor, a way to connect the prop shaft the collar for the prop shaft [the thing that mounts to the boat, that takes the shaft from inside your boat to the outside?] and a prop. if you've got a strong google game, can source a motor for free, or cheap. 500bucks. no problem, you've got a running boat.

to connect the motor to the shaft, find an old front-wheel drive car, and rip the U-joints off of it.. remember EVERYTHING labeled, "marine" automatically makes it 60x more expensive.

Looking to get my first kayak and I'm wondering what I should watch out for. Plan to use it for saltwater island camping this summer. Usually I putt around in a 14 foot motorboat, but downsizing seems ideal for some of the rockier islands around here.

Any general/saltwater kayaking advice?

Know what to do when your shit flips over, and waterproof everything super carefully.

Other than that, it's not too complicated.

Oh, and try not to get washed out to sea by any currents, that can happen if you're in a coastal area with no motor and the tides are strong.
>>
>>757455
Open ocean or bays and lagoons? Cold water or warm? Do you plan on fishing?
>>
>>757489
Boston harbor; cold water; planning to stay away from the open ocean/outer islands until I get more experienced. Hadn't really considered kayak fishing but it is something I'd like to do.

Thanks anon. I know where most of the eddys/currents tend to form around here, so I should be ok.

Was my experience with the boy scouts unique? I just truly was disappointed with my troop.

When they came to our school they said we would learn to live in the woods and get to play with tanks. I immediately joined. When I got there, I found that I was the only child that was not obese or had a severe medical condition. 75% of these kids had inhalers. I knew right away I was surrounded by total fucking losers that had no business whatsoever in the woods. These kids were all genetically worthless and even at age 7 I knew that. I stayed for 8 years, so that I could go camping and hopefully learn something at boy scout summer camp. I was eventually kicked out because I refused to use the buddy system and would go off swimming or to the woods alone because it was too damn boring and I wanted to practice actual woodland skills and they considered that dangerous. I now am a skilled woodsman but no thanks whatsoever to that pussy brigade you call the boy scouts.

My troop actually did /out/ stuff and had good leadership, but it was still a bit of an autism-fest.

We had 4 guys in my troop who became scholarship college athletes though, but I think guys like that get into it at a young age in cub scouts, so if you don't have a strong local cub scout program your boy scout troop is gonna be fucked.
>>
>>755158
I had a hell of a time in the BSA because I grew up in rural Kentucky, and luckily we had a troop designated to the little community I grew up in. It actually used to be a pretty happening place with a post office, grocery store, and Masonic Lodge, and I that's why. Eventually the post office closed and we became a part of the nearest city. We used meet in the old Masonic lodge until they tore it down and our troop was disbanded.

Agreed anon. The ultra-lighters seem to be usually day hike fags from the cities who can barely manage to not collapse on any intense multi day trek by casting away literally every possible piece of gear they can slide by without. The reason the pounds takes it out of them is that they're not conditioned usually.

>mfw my bro hiked the PCT with a pack that averaged 70-75 lbs most of the way.
>>
>>765558
I know a guy hiking in Peru right now, because of his climbing gear his pack is 120 pounds. He is 160 pounds soaking wet. I asked him if it was hard to carry that and he aounded confused and then said "dude, what the hell im not some sort of pussy".

Give me a reason not to buy a S'well metal canteen/thermos, aside from it being popular with college kids

>keeps hot liquid for 12 hours
>cold liquid for 24 hours
>simple and secure top, perfect mouth width
>quality stainless steel design, fairly lightweight
>aesthetic design good for outtawoods
>charitble company owned by a qt

Any canteens of similar quality I should look into? I really like the S'well.

>>
I've seen so many thermoses at yard sales, and for next to nothing
>>
>>754518
I prefer quality and dont mind paying for it. I have a "nice" Gevalia thermos that my dad got me, but its dinged up to
hell and a pain in the ass to actually use, because they made it so youre supposed to pour the coffee into the cap.

The thing has always leaked like a fucker and only keeps the coffee luke warm for about 4-5 hours in a room temperature setting. Its too trouble some
to take off the pouring device and drink directly from the canteen because the mouth is too large and then you have all
these extra parts lying around.

I like the S'wells simplicity and build quality. If Im going to buy a thermos, I want a proper one that will actually hold temperature for extended periods of time, not meme length time
>>
>>754515
>inconsistency in quality
>not durable

>hot for 12/cold for 24

I can buy any thermos that does that for a lot cheaper and maybe has more features like cups and handles.

If I were you, I would save my cash for something more useful but if you really want it, get it. Just make sure you read plenty of reviews as with anything you are going to drop money on.
