Does /out/ ever get blisters from hiking? I just got some on both of my heels for the first time after getting new shoes, and its fucking bullshit. Now i've looked up all this information about tying shoes differently and getting some fancy expensive socks.
Does /out/ have any recommendations for good blister prevention?

Hi everyone, me and a friend plan on going camping in south west Australia soon. Was wondering if there are any good, legal places that are accessible and somewhat isolated. We are bringing only essentials and around 1 weeks supply of food and water. We're hoping to collect water and possibly hunt/fish to stay as long as possible.
Any tips on where to go? what to bring? What we can hunt/ trap? legal / danger issues? Edible flora?

i'm not sure about much south of bunbury, but around meilup beach in dunsborough has some really nice bushland and coast, but i doubt theres any fresh water or game.
Between bunno and Perth theres a lot of dams and lakes you could check out up in the hills, they're pretty nice
If you're looking for isolation, i suggest you head inland towards the forests or over the hills

Moron here, I don't have time to post in another thread (since I'm leaving for a week long trip earlySaturday morning) so I'll ask here. I just bought a JetBoil stove, and after looking online and skimming through the operating manual I haven't seen a clarification as to whether this is solely intended to boil water, or if it can boil food (example: oatmeal, ramen, etc). If it's the former, do I just pour the boiling water on top of a bowl of oatmeal or MRE and call it a meal? Or can I do the latter? Thanks

Stoves are useful for if you bring food that needs to be cooked for lunch of breakfast. You shouldn't have to stop in the middle of the day and make a fire to cook something, because then you have to wait until the embers burn out. If you have unlimited source of water to drown it out, then I guess it doesn't make a difference, but it's still just easier to bring a stove.

If youre going to cook in it the Jetboil flash and zip need to be boil in the bag food only, you'll burn anything else.
It is possible to cook with a Minimo as the flame is a lot more tweakable. I bought the Minimo to use the stove, and run with my old Jetboil pot as it packs better for me. I'd also advise buying a Jetboil pot stand, it lets you cook/use normal pans as if it were a normal gas stove. This way I have the balls out fast efficient boil of a Jetboil...

I remember I would drape a bedsheets over an umbrella to make a makeshift tent in my living room and sleep inside just to feel like I was /out/
My family couldn't afford camping stuff back then, but I slept like a baby in my tent.

I live in a rural town, it's all woods and farmland. The tallest hill in town has been a farm since around 1690. It's behind my parents' woods. They own several acres of forest (with the neighbors all owning several acres as well) and this large hilltop field abuts the back of all of our land, with a stone wall separating it from the forest. I think it's about 25 acres cleared. The farm itself is long gone...

My childhood was filled with adventures in the woods, and when we were old enough to explore all the way back to the field it was like a rite of passage. That old stone wall, laying there in the shadows, overgrown, covered in vines. It's hard to even see out into the field during summer because the brambles and vines are so thick at the edge. Having a five day trip starting on Sunday, today I see that one of my sleeping bag zippers has come off the track: since I'm expecting below-freezing temperatures for my backpacking trip, I've been desperately searching for any way to fix it: I've taken it to a tailor who couldn't do anything, the people at REI couldn't do anything, and literally not one fucking arts & crafts store in my area carries any kind of zipper repair kit. I did it for 2 years. I built a shack from plywood and pallets I got from the dump, It way in the back of this summer camp property. I made a little garden, outhouse, wood shed, and workshop. I got tools off craigslist for cheap including furniture. Dumpster diving, salvation army, I even learned guitar and did cover songs at bars for $50 for 20 songs and learned crafts to sell at the farmer's market.

For all you who live in large metropolitan areas, how /out/ is your city? I know not everyone here lives the /out/ dream of complete self sufficiency and isolation in the woods.
I live in the San Francisco area.
Pros:
>a lot of woods and nature close to the city, makes it easy to get away quickly.
>wide variety of outdoor environments with a several hour's drive- desert, forest, mountains, coastline, meadow, etc.
>pretty good solitude in some natural areas, so long as you don't go during peak times to popular easy places.
>possible to live in the woods and still commute to work in the city
Cons:
>lots of traffic, makes it hard to get away
>expensive unless you live in a shitty neighborhood
>some natural areas crowded with fuckers (Marin headlands)
>natural areas are dispersed, making only a few sites within an hour of SF suitable for backpacking

I live in Portsmouth, UK. One of the most densely populated cities in the UK. Thankfully we're close to the sea so I get to go out sailing quite often.
With Spring finally here, I'm taking a few days this weekend to see the flowers in Smoky Mountains NP, likely camping in Cade's Cove. Are there any trails or areas you could recommend?

Seeing all the patch threads got me thinking... would anyone want an /out/ t-shirt? I've bought and made custom t-shirts before and have done some research into which site would be good to use that would allow relatively cheap international shipping... I'm not looking to make a profit and would be very transparent about the process, but first I want to gauge if there'd even be any interest.

So that's the thing--I can set the base price to be cheap, and then hope that enough gets ordered to bring the price down so I'm not selling at a loss. I've done the math and if there's over 100 orders placed, the base cost can be $13 per shirt, which is about as much as people have paid for a patch here.... Obviously if I set the base cost higher, to like $15, we don't have to wait for 100+ /out/ists to buy it...
forgot to add: $3.99 shipping to US, $12.50 all international (no shipping to Morocco, Algeria, Jordan nor Tunisia). Hence why I'm trying to keep shirt cost as minimal as it can be.
