How many of you are hams?

What's your rig?
Favourite bands?
Hf?

I'm writing my exam this week and can't wait to get on the air. 73.

Wanted to get into HF after getting my license, then I read up on what sort of monster of an antenna I'd need so I just stuck with VHF for now.

I've been wanting to get i to radio for a while. Where do I start?

There are a few hams knocking around /out/, myself included. Some people are into digital VHF/UHF modes, a few other people do HF and SOTA activations. Most of my traffic is on 2m/70cm, but I've made a few contacts on 20m as well.

If you pass your general (and I strongly recommend trying for it) you might look into building a KN-Q7a transceiver. It's a sweet little monoband SSB rig for 80, 40, or 20m and won't cost you more than $175. Great portable unit and a solid learning experience. If you must get a cheap handheld then I'd steer you towards the Wouxun UVD1P or Anytone 3318 (any variant.) The UV5R is fine for a loaner radio, but commit to the extra $40 and get a radio you won't outgrow in the first two months.

I am thinking about buying a firearm.

Probably just sport shooting for now. Maybe hunting. I don't really have any plans, I just want a gun.

The problem is that I have not used a gun in nearly 15 years. I learned when I was a wee sc/out/ and received my firearm safety certification and all that other fun shit.

I understand the basic stuff
>only point a gun at something/someone you want to kill
>don't look down the barrel of a loaded gun
>etc

I want to learn the proper usage. So I can reload it, and fire it without looking like a fucking retard. I do not live near any friends/family members who will be able to demonstrate proper firearm usage. I also do not have any private land where I can practice at the moment.

So /out/ how does an adult learn how to use a firearm?

Several times a year in my area local law enforcement agencies will provide basic firearm safety and operation training for the general public over a weekend. You should look and see if anything like that is offered in your area.
>>
Go to /k/, try to ignore the shit posting, or simply read the sticky
>>
>>718116
There are a lot of trainers out there that will provide basic firearm safety and marksmanship training, check your local gun clubs or shooting ranges, they will be able to point you in the right direction if they can't provide it. Hands on is always better than reading about it online.

After getting the basic safety course done it's best to just get a few guns and start practising, I don't have land to shoot on so I use the range at a private gun club.

Somebody just gave me this plant. Do you know which species it is? What do i need to know to keep it alive?
7 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Not sure of the species, but it looks tropical which means it will need plenty of direct sunlight. Water it a bit every week or two.
>>
>>717742
Has sense, from were im from tropical flora is very common.
Also looks like a coleus but not sure.
>>
>>717735
Shit I should know the name, I see those fuckers everywhere. Definitely a tropical. Probably need bright, filtered light, well drained soil, make sure it doesn't dry out but don't keep it soaking either, just slightly moist... Those are pretty general but should keep it going okay.

Hello friends. I just got a job working at MSU for the summer in East Lansing. I'm from North Carolina and I've never been up there.

Does anyone have any suggests about cool/beautiful places for hiking/fishing within a couple hours of East Lansing?

Other Michigan suggestions and thoughts are welcome.

Pretty much everything starting with Claire headed North is chock full of some of the nicest public lands in the country. Hundreds of miles of trails, paved bike paths, and public lake shore. The state has large parcels of state land and conservancy land that you can camp on if the huge state park system isn't rustic enough for you. Most counties also have large parks once your in the northern parts of the state. I live and work in Emmet county, which is the northern most County on the west side of the lower peninsula and you could probably spend your entire summer here and. It run out of new outdoor options. We are also almost exactly 3 hours from East Lansing so I would consider that a pretty easy trip. The biggest question I would have for you is what kind of activities are you most into and then we can make suggestions from there. Pic is the highway as you head out of Harbor Springs, it is known as one of the most beautiful places to cycle in the country and is lined with large shoreline parks including sturgeon Bay state park which is a huge sand dune lined beach.
>>
The Michigan Dunes is great for day hikes and picture taking. For hiking and camping I'd suggest heading to the Upper Peninsula and Lake Superior. You can see the vanishing Boreal Forests while they last. There's /out/ in lower Michigan but heading to Lake Superior will give you something way different than North Carolina.
If you're real ambitious head for Isle Roayle. It's incredible.

Everyone knows that any outdoorsman worth his salt has a green boonie hat.

Post pictures and discuss green boonies.

Why are they so good? Why are they so perfect for the outdoors? Why is the green boonie the best item of outdoors clothing ever to be invented?

Why you so keen to get to Borden op? Plenty of better paddles out there, Myrtle lake and bowron lake circuit in BC. Maligne lake and spirit island (jasper) good fishing. Lake land provincial park in Ab and the surrounding lakes on crown land. White water on the higher sections of the north sask.... Pic related but not mine.

What do you faggots carry your water in?

I usually have just a black Sigg steel bottle when i go out for a day or so, but I just bought a milsurp Camelbak for 25 euros.

Only thing I'm *kind of* worried about is the possible BPA in the bladder, but momma didn't raise no pussy.

3L Camelback stuffed into a small backpack for day hikes.
For longer trips I also take a nelgene with a 600ml cup.

I kinda want to buy a bladder pack for jogging and biking but I'm worried I'll look like a fag desu.
>>
>>715840
BPA is the last thing you should worry about. Having your bladder burst or puncture should be your biggest fear. That's why I feel stainless steel is more reliable and can actually be put in a fire to purify the water.
>>
General hiking/camping I use a stainless water bottle I bought at the thrift store.

Skiing, scrambling or long-distance stuff I've got a 2l platypus bladder that I put in whatever pack I'm using.

Thinking about ordering pic related. How am I doing.

Not good, apparently.
>>
>>715508
But I already ordered my Mora by wholesale boxes.
>>
>>715505
Not too well. I'd give you two stars but aside from looks ( if you care about them ) I don't get why people would buy civilian consumer products when milsurp is so much cheaper. I found pic related for $245; discounted from over $500. I may not be much into tactical and I confess I prob won't use the majority of these items for their intended purposes but a bargain is a bargain.

I live in Berlin atm and fucking hate it. The air is disgusting and there is not enough nature around.

I want to live at a place like pic related. What kind of work would i have to do to live there? Owning a beach bar would be sweet or something similar to this. I don't need a lot of money just enough to survive and have a nice computer etc.
Is my dream worth pursuing? Any tips?
