Vodka is distilled to a much higher alcohol percentage than whiskey. Whiskey still retains some of the flavor of the grain it's made from, which is why rye whiskey is tangy and corn whiskey is more sweet. Aged vodka just tastes like wood, because it was distilled down to 98% and then diluted.
