Tourfat here. I finished my ~9000 bicycle tour across the United States three weeks ago, but I didn't have the time to post until now. All in all it was 9 months of travel and 3 months of slumming at different houses across the US.

Ask somebody who went from fat lazy bum to fat touring hobo anything.

I took 1500 pictures. Favorite states to bike through were Arizona and Montana. Worst states were Mississippi and Illinois.

Been hiking and camping shitloads my entire life all over Montana/Washington/Wyoming and have never seen anything more than tracks. Motherfuckers stay out of sight. Completely alright with me.

I was just south of big sur. A guy i met on the bus out there said he would show me a cool spot. I didnt like it and wanted to sleep on the beach. I figured the beach was just over the ridge so i keep hiking. The trail keeps switching back and the sun is getting low so i cut through an opening that appears to lead to the ridge. I end up in someones back yard. Oops. I keep going...another persons back yard, then another, then another, and another. The sun is now setting and i'm not walking at night. I find myself in an open area between somebody's property and a group of rv campers on a private road. Im trying to keep a low profile. It's not ideal, but it will have to do. As it starts to get dark a deer/antelope(idk the species, it pranced) appeared and i had a stare down with it for 30 minutes. I had been crouched and it started to come over to me so i popped up and it pranced away. It's now getting dark so i roll up in my tarp and drift into a state of half sleep. Some hours pass and for some reason im suddenly awake. I'm listening to the sounds of the night. It's really quiet, but i hear something up at the top of the ridge, slowly coming down. A few steps then silence. A few steps then silence. This happens over a course of five minutes. Whatever it is, is trying to be stealthy. A stick breaks. At this point i start my blood starts pumping. I am wrapped up completely in my tarp and cant see anything anyways because its a full moon. I just wait. It keeps creeping closer and closer. I hear it over in this thicket of redwoods maybe 25 feet away and i decide it's now or never. I pop up suddenly with my tarp held high in my left hand and grab my bike tire which is right next to me and say slowly " i hear you". It is pitch black in the thicket and whatever it is has not moved a muscle. It is sitting there, staring at me. I take an aggressive posture and bang the bike tire on the ground, acting as if i am going to charge it. It stays silent and doesnt move at all.
>>
>>607306
Contd.

I keep banging the tire and throw some sticks over towards it, it stays motionless and silent. I slowly back down the slope to the private road near the rv campers and spend the next two hours with my back to a tree. Whatever it was didnt follow me. It was big enough to crack a stick and it didnt run when i popped up. I am almost positive it was a mountain lion. Either that or a human, but i really dont think a human would have tried to sneak up on me like that because i was practically invisible from where it came down from. I have been paranoid of mountain lions ever since

Help me /out/. I'm baffled by paracord. Why do people buy this nonsense?

>>
My buddy Dave suggests bank line.

I agree.
>>
>>606025
Paracord is literally a meme cordage. Why anyone would pay that much money for cordage that they are going to dispose of boggles my mind.

Not to mention that it is heavy and it takes up a TON of volume.

I usually carry a small length of thin bank line for when I really need strength, but aside from that, I just use a natural fiber twine as it is cheap, lightweight, and is low volume. The stuff is practically free.

But yeah get paracord if you like to make cute bracelets and jewelry to impress your friends at your next comic book convention.

How do you make your coffee while /out/?

I do the same as you, especially while backpacking. I bring a moka pot and grinder in the car, but that doesn't come on the trail with me. I know that jet boil makes a french press attachment
>>
Instant coffee in a small plastic container + container of dried milk if I feel luxurious (I usually do this if I want fancy oats, otherwise I'd buy those little coffee sachets).

I guess if you're taking a car, you could take a french press and some filter coffee.

state parks, my own woods (which is a small part of a much larger forest). about once a year we travel somewhere far away to camp, like in the mountains or suttin. i don't bring weapons, but sometimes i pack bears prey when relevant.
>>
>>608194
I live near two National Forests. Much better than National Parks. In NP you have to buy permits and can only camp at designated camping spots. In National Forests it is dispersed camping. You dont need permits (at least at the two near me). The only rule I am aware of is you are not allowed to camp for more than 14 consecutive days in the same spot. After 14 days you have to move at least 1 mile then you can camp again.

Guns use to be a no no in all National Parks, believe it or not the Obama administration made it legal. (You still have to obey all state gun laws and restrictions yada yada yada.......)

Is weight an issue? IE. are you going to be hauling this stuff long distances in the future using your own strength?

If so then buy shit intended for mountaineering. Feathered Friends, Western Mountaineering, Back Diamond, Mountain Hardwear, The North Face, Montbell, Hilleberg, etc.

If not then buy shit intended for outfitters. I'm not that familiar with this stuff, but you'll be looking at canvas tents which can accommodate a chimney, a wood heating stove with a chimney, heavy as fuck sleeping bag, possibly a collapsible cot, etc.

Mountaineering stuff tends to be more expensive and often won't hold up to the same abuse as outfitter gear, but performs just as well if you take care of it. A -40C/F mountaineering sleeping bag will be about 4-5lb and cost usually around $700. A -40C/F outfitter sleeping bag will be like 20lb and cost around $200 with much thicker abrasion resistant fabrics than the mountaineering bag.
>>
>>607571
Yeah, the general idea is to be hauling the stuff long distance in the future.

>a real deal.
The only way to find out, is to get into a real survival situation. I'm afraid overconfident people usually are the first to break under extreme stress. (usually, not always)

A "survival expert" may not be able to deal with failures.
>I've been training, practicing and teaching other people to survive and now, when it's real I can't do it.

If a normal person fails to make a friction fire, it's not like failing in life. An expert can blame himself even if it wasn't his fault.
