Is it generally a good idea to take kayaking lessons if 1) I've never kayaked before and 2) I have an interest in kayaking? I'm assuming it's not one of those things you can just learn by yourself, right?
Kayaking lessons are really pricey around here.
Also, what the general rule or what are the regulations when it comes to kayaking? Like if I want to go kayaking to a river or lake or something, do I have to obtain a permit from the local district ranger station/state park office? I used to work at KNF and would like one day go back to kayak the Klammath River. Any other advice welcome.

Yes, if you're out kayaking alone and something goes wrong you're in deep.
If you have access to safe water (not running) then you could just practise a lot, but you will need to do your own research into saftey. I would say take a course just to learn the most basic stuff like different paddel strokes, capsize drills etc.

legislation on that changes wherever you go. Generally there are organisations that will tell you the good places to go kayaking orhow to get authorisation if needed.
In Britain we can go on pretty much any water so long as we enter and exit from public land.
A few things to keep in mind:
>you are the bitch of the river, make way for everyone else
>if there's an obstacle or rapid, always get out and analyse it before going
>if you swim, lean back and keep your feet up, getting your foot stuck while in moving water is a good way to get killed
>always carry a knife capable of cutting straps
>bring throwline every time
>learn to roll, it makes life a lot easier
>if you swim, don't grab onto your kayak, that fills it with water and it will sink. Recovering a sunk kayak is a fucking nightmare
>never trust a branch to hold your weight
>never buy a second hand drysuit
I never took lessons.
My first outing was flat water.
I have taken thre chicks to the same lake and nailed all three of them, though it was later and not on the water.

If your not a dumbass lessons arent needed. Just dont go right into open sea or raging rivers, and make sure you have a life vest
I never took lessons but i go on reasonably calm rivers that only have a few white cap "rapids" and small lakes. rhe only thing lessons will teach you is proper paddling, which you can learn on your own, and eskimo rolls, which unless you use a spray skirt are useless.
If you have extra cash and time it cant hurt but for most its an unnecessary cost

Moved out here near Seattle last month from PA, but my journey started in CT. Drove all the way out here alone, but boy was it an experience. Stopped in Yellowstone for a day and I loved every second of it.
Anyway, I'll be here for probably 4-5 years, so I was wondering if y'all had some ideas on what to do around here. I've been to the northern part of the Olympic National forest, but I'm hoping to head to the Hoh rainforest soon (my favorite biome). My cousin is a botanist and has given me a bunch of ideas, but she's in Spokane, so I can't have her show me around.
I'm also new to real mountain hiking, since I never really saw any snow-capped mountains before my trip across America, so any tips for that and/or winter hiking would be appreciated.

Go camp bear Creek off the fire roads in Olympic. So beautiful and secluded. You can shoot all you want out there also. And the fishing is fantastic. Now you know my secret place don't tell

Can winter camping/overnight sleeping ever be made livable?
I sleep in my van right now, and the cold keeps me up at night and is miserable during the day. But some people seem to do just fine in it. What's the secret?

Insulate your van with reflectix and a vapor barrier, install a roof vent and buy a propane buddy heater. Also invest in a good down sleeping bag.
You can also use a hot water bottle to heat your bag up.

Hey /out/ for this coming winter I am wanting to get a warm winter jacket, and been looking at military surplus jackets, and was wondering does /out/ have approved milsurp winter jacket? I was looking at goretex ecwcs on ebay, and they were pretty cheap (around 70 bucks for my size)

mostly ecwcs jacket is something I believe I might want.. I live in climate where it gets in single digits, high winds (sometimes) snow could be up to a foot (but more realistically its 6-8 inches)
The weather fluctuates some days its in single digits some days its in the upper 50 to lower 60s.

Alright /out/. Let's talk about what would happen if militants took to the streets of your hometown. Sort of a "red dawn" situation. What would you do? Bug out? Bug in? Fight back? What supplies would be kept on you?
I would most likely bug out but the issue I run into is taking my family with as it would slow me down. But my conscious wouldn't allow me to leave them.
Picture is not of mine. But my mosin would definitely be coming with me as it is my only firearm. And of course my bug out bag.
I would want to get deep into a specific large forest region I've backpacked through multiple times. Which I live about 3 hours away from unfortunetely.

If I went solo (likely), this has appeal if I was out of my normal AO. I'm so familar with everything for 250 mile radius, I would never get lost.
The weight tradeoff would be far better in a gun, for me.

Hey, sc/out/s! I want to get a dog for going /out/. I also want to start getting involved in mycology. So I think I want to choose a breed that would enjoy helping me with that, since working breeds enjoy working. I want to make sure it's a dog with a good sniffer, for finding mushrooms, but I can't choose between a beagle and a lab. The beagle would certainly eat less, but a lab, I think would be able to carry his own food. I do a lot of hiking, and could be out for up to a couple weeks. Which breed would be easiest to train for SAR-type work? What else should I think about before choosing my breed?

This isn't my first pet. I'm thirty, I've had several dogs before. Walking him wouldn't be an issue, I'm starting the PCT this spring, and plan on continuing straight to the CT and then AT afterwards. And regardless of how you feel about mushrooming, its something I'd like to do to pass the time while I hike.

during winter i keep a carhart jacket, snow pants, emergency blanket, and some rain gear (poncho, etc). Also a spare pair of boots, fire stuff, first aid, and always have a bunch of granola bars for school snacks. Extra school supplies, usually have chainsaw and ppe's in car just because use it so much this time of year

I want a bag for very cold weather winter camping.

There is one on amazon for 50 bucks on sale, its a coleman with polyester fill.
I also have found an old outfitter in santa fe that sells high end gear from 20 years ago. All lightly used but clean and in good shape. He has hundreds of them and he sells them super cheap.
Has the technology changed much in 20 years? What would you guys do?
