What does /out/ think of this guy? I love his axe reviews.

He's okay if you can get past his religious thing. I don't pay attention to it.
Apparently he used to be a big prepper nut with another channel but switched when he made people angry, but I dont have the links..
As anything with youtube, take it with a grain of salt.
Based on the fact that homesteading in America is so contrived it is crinegworthy I can barely stand to watch his videos.

Digging a hole to poop in
Hello /out/
I am wanting to buy my neighbors boys (6-8 not exactly sure) something for Christmas. I am hoping you all have run into some cool items out on the internet, that would make cool gifts for outdoorsy kids. We live out in the country, and they spend most of their time when its warm outside with their dad gardening or just playing in the dirt.
MREs would actually make the parents laugh but arent much fun to play with, so those sorts of joke ideas are welcome for lulz but mostly looking for something original and cool for some kids that already have tonka...

And while I dont think this is the type of board to go there, while I am at it no I am not trying to force myself into their family or some shit. I give them squirrel tails all the time.
A nice shovel, boots, rc car, airsoft or paintball gun, work gloves. What state do you live in?
>>640776
RC cars are cheap now, and they can have a lot of fun with.
What about a cheap tent? They're cheap at walmart. Maybe they'd just sleep outside one night with their dad, or just pitch it up in the yard and pretend camp. They're pretty young to really enjoy it properly, but never too young to start.

Closest sport is Bi-athalon.
Closest I can get to Bi-athalon in any real measure in AZ is Summer Bi-athalon.

Kinda fun!

I snowshoe around in January sometimes snaring and shooting snowshoe hares. Yes, yes, I have snowshoes and the rabbits are snowshoes too!

From the things I've read about that place, you'll either love it or hate both it and him with every fiber of your being.
The man doesn't seem to generate much middle ground.
Here's the skinny of it - I'm lost. My wife and I both fell for the college meme and took out student loans to make it happen. I went into culinary arts, but that industry blows. I did it for 10 years and I wanted to start a family, restaurant life will not allow me to spend a lot of quality time with my kids. I got out and now work a desk job. My wife's degree is anthropology, so she has no hope of finding a job in that field and we both feel really dumb.
Anyway, I have realized over the past few years that I have an indefatigable love for nature. I have...

I could totally see you combining your green thumb with your cooking background and making some sort of restaurant or business selling food that you grow and cook. Reminds me of this place I visited in Rotterdam.

I always loved stuff like that, but things like that require start up money, and I have student loan payments. Maybe an idea for the future.
Probably the only thing you are qualified for with those degrees is sucking dick. Find a chain link fence you and your girl on one side and the protein generators on the other.
Does /out/ ever had an /out/ date? This week I will meet with an old friend from school and thought about going to some nice place instead of some average cafe. Share experiences, anons.

General tent and shelter thread
I'm having a hard time deciding on which tarp tent to get. I'm concerned about condensation due to the single-wall design, so I'm leaning toward pic related (double moment). However I'm not sure how legitimate my concern is so I'm also considering the Stratospire 2, Squall 2, and Rainshadow 2. If anyone has experience with tarptent and can tell me about the model you have I would really appreciate it.
>>638221
Also, the reasoning for the Double Moment is that it has a fully separate rainfly and the roof of the interior component is solid. Their other tents are either single wall or the interior has a mesh roof.
I'm not really concerned about weight, since even the heaviest tarptents are still pretty light. The biggest limiting factor is probably making sure that I have sufficient room to set it up in the woods.
How come outdoor people dont just make temp lodging out of branchs and sticks? Why use tents?
>>638298
Presumably it's a matter of convenience.
so, i am happy to have a job that is mostly /out/side. i get to work inna woods, under homes, run a sewer plant, and play with heavy machinery all day.
how about you fellow /out/ists? do any of you work in the wet, cold, burning hot, smelly, woody, dirty, gritty, wonderful world of rural areas?
post pictures, stories, and general anecdotes you have run into. what you have learned from wise, old rednecks and such, and best of all POST PICS.
pic related. its a slinger dumping sand in one of my sand traps.

How do you carve out the bowl innawoods without carrying a hook knife/gouge/other specialty woodworking tools?
grab a coal with two sticks
place on surface you want to carve
blow on coal to make it burn hotter
let it work for you
clean with the tip of your knife/axe
>>635196
With a hatchet. Is it bad for the cutting edge? Maybe a little, it dulls the blade some; a few seconds with a puck and it's right back to sharp.
>>635197
This guy knows how to make a bowl. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVbnj4sEgks
Do any of you have experience with emergency food rations whilst /out/? I'm leaving for a very long trip and plan to take some kind of emergency rations like pic related. I have a few questions:
1. What is the best brand for these? I know there are some that contain more nutritional value than others, but I can't find a good list anywhere.
2. Can these be food substitutes at all, or is it unhealthy to take these long-term? Assuming the brand has proper nutritional value of course. What's the catch with replacing food consumption with these?
Why wouldn't you just bring normal food?
Who the fuck would want to eat that?
What the fuck is wrong with you?
>>632630
You needn't know the details dumbfuck, but long story short, I need rations due to their affordability/durability and longetivity of the trip.
You should definitely try it before going out, its the worst kind of food you can imagine.
there are basicly 2 kinds of rations emergency and survival rations
as in its name its for emergencies and/or survival situations it gives you calories and nutrition and will keep you alive but thats it.
to consume emergency rations you need water
>it taste bad, precisely it taste like cardboard
>its dry and i mean really really, you have to drink 2 liters of water to eat 1 havenly dehydrated cracker...

Do you usually say hi to strangers you meet on the trails while hiking? Is it even normal? Recently met a couple on the route, sad "hey", they walked silently by stairing with surprise, like "wtf"? I guess there is some kind of an "outdoor rule" not to bother hikers and let em be totally by themselves with nature, am I right?
Depends. Are you from murica?
>>632568
Eye contact, head nod, "Hi," sometimes conversation. Bail out at any point if not reciprocated.
>>632570
No, swedfag actually...
