Tetons.jpg
3 MB,
A couple friends of mine, both hardcore survivalists have offered to take me along with them when they go out into the Tetons for a month or two in the winter. I really want to go with them, but I have zero experience surviving in the wild, and surviving on a windy mountain in -60 degree weather in the coldest spot in the US sounds a tad bit insane. These guys know what they're doing, they've been doing it every year- Would I be able to survive with them and learn, or would I just be dangerous dead weight? One of them is a blackfoot native with a crazy amount of hunting...

If they're your friends, then consult them about how to prepare, what gear you'll need, etc. That being said I would highly recommend against making your first backcountry experience take place in such an extreme environment.

The knives are ok
But the sheaths suck
The belt loop is not strong and can break at the pivot point,
No snap, nothing to lock the blade in the sheath. Means the knife can come out when walking,

I've literally just got into kayak fishing. I bought a Emotion Spitfire 8 and it seems to be okay for my purposes. A rod holder is a must though. Anyone else into kayak fishing? Pic related. It's me.

Yeah I kayak fish quite often in the summer, a few times a week if possible,

I'm hoping to get out one more time this season

89 KB,
I'm talking stuff you are actually bringing with you, not just hunting/foraging for in the wilderness. This could be the obvious things like seasonings/herbs/vegetables you've grown and dried, but also stuff like emergency/supplemental rations in case you can't find enough food in the wild. (pic related, Hardtack from 2008)

Here's some examples,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fE5KzvOZRk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_vLuMobHCI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyjcJUGuFVg

One of the things I like to bring are bags of instant soup. I grow a lot of vegetables and mushrooms in my garden and dry a great deal of them ( >>634583 ). With those and some homemade pasta I'll bag up various types of soups and stews I can make from dehydrated vegetables and their powders.

What do you take along with you on your wilderness adventures, /out/?

Hardtack, Beef Jerky, Pemmican (with blueberries man, shits so good), bar of dark chocolate, instant oatmeal, dried beans, rice, bouillon cubes, MREs sometimes. Not all of this shit at once, but I always bring hardtack and Pemmican, they make a pretty good stew type thing if you mix them in water.

I make deer jerky form time to time. It is really difficult not to eat it all in one sitting. It is so delicious.

A big bag of ganja!

rather have a bag of weed over anything else.

Alcohol is always welcome.

Other than that, magic mushrooms are best savoured whilst innawoods

Last time I took and E camping I was rolling around on the floor and broke my spectacles
>>
Depends on the type of adventure. Psychedelics are cool if its just an afternoon out with some friends and supplies are /casualmode/. For really going innawoods, I stay sober for the most part, but I'll bring some joints when I hunt. Most drugs dull my senses too much for survival mode.

I figured this was the best board to ask this since I've seen threads about first aid kits before.

I'm looking for a first aid kit that goes in the trunk of a car as a Christmas gift for my sister.
I would like to give her something above a spartan basic kit because she's a registered nurse.

I don't know what to look for. Links or models to search are very welcome. Budget is $20 - $30 burgerbucks

I don't have the link now, but I will in a few hours. Mini jump bags to keep in your car.
>>

Don't know that you could get much more than a basic kit for that budget. Maybe just get one of the cheap ones with bandaids and whatnot in it, then buy some extra pieces yourself to put in it. Some things you could add: liquid bandage, quickclot, steristrips, compression bandage.

I was recently out with someone who had one. He hated it, said it was too heavy, and didn't fit right, kept jabbing him in places. It may have been adjusted wrong, I don't know, just relaying what I was told.
>>
>>626000
Nice GET. If the pack is loaded down a ton and there's no kiidney pad on it it can be a bit rough, but compared to other metal frames I've used the LK35 frame is fine. If his experience is with non-metal frames then yeah he's gonna hate it until he gets used to it. The kidney pad completely resolves this issue and it just straps right on.

I've backpacked for a five weeks before. I've done several trips that were three or four weeks long as well. When backpacking for a long time you learn how little you really need. People are also generally very nice and will do amazing things for you without being asked. On the five week trip we backpacked through Scotland, Wales, and England (I'm American). We would eat in a pub most nights.

If it's an area you frequent then each time you go, pick up a rock and try to put it back where it looks like it belongs. Leaving the pile makes it easy for hippie vandals to reconstruct

Already talked to /k/ about this. Now it's time for your opinion. What's wrong with killing Cecil the lion? It wasn't poaching. Walter Palmer had legal authority to conduct the hunt. Lion hunting has been an accepted practice for thousands of years in many countries, so why the outrage all of the sudden?

This is really a question for /pol/...god help you.

But to give my $0.02:

Just because it is legal doesn't make it right. And I don't really see the "sport" in it. It isn't like he's eating the meat, so the rifle is there to make the hunt easier. But an easier hunt takes away from the the tradition of the sport - which was traditionally done with spears/arrows, horses, and/or dogs. It was a hunting method that required real skill and was something to be proud of.

Hunting...

Walter Palmer DID use an arrow, not a rifle. It was only when the Cecil got away that someone shot him with a rifle.

what are the advantages of packing matches as opposed to lighters? Not trolling, just seems like they weigh about the same but you can get far more lights out of a new lighter than a fresh box of matches

matches basically suck in every way

The phosphorus head will burn much hotter for a sustained length of time than a bic lighter, Match better in wind as it will actually start, but you still need to know what you're doing.
