Just did a little /out/ today and damn I was cold. About the only thing that was warm on me was my feet since I have a dcent pair of boots and wool socks. Rest of me? Ice cold. My face in particular was frozen. I got gloves but they are so bulky if I wanted to do anything even taking out my water bottle i'd have to take em off and it would take a long time for them to warm back up.
It was like 20F out today, that's with the sun up, I couldn't imagine doing this at night.
Just like I would out when hot. With just warmer gear. Also more ways of starting fire, some more food for the extra calories burned.
Get wool/polypropylene long john silvers and an undershirt
Get a scarf or a buff and a hat
Wear an outer layer that blocks the wind and something to insulate underneath

Good gear. Really no way around it... and you get what you pay for.
Keep the wind/water out, and you'll stay a lot warmer. Dress in layers, and bring extra gear in case something does get wet (socks/gloves especially).

I'm thinking of getting a scuba license and before that I wanted to toy around homemade equipment.
I saw some youtube videos about using coke bottles full of compressed air to breathe underwater, but then I found pic related. It's an 8l-liter hand-pumped bugspray.
I don't know the science behind "the bends" but I know they exist. Should I worry about them if I don't plan on going underwater more than 15 mins, and never more than 10 meters?
Any scuba experts here?

This style of diving has a proven history and is much harder to fuck up than trying to DIY a scuba cylinder, especially without a regulator.

Been meaning to order some sam splints for use in my pack. They're not the most ideal form of splint, but the flexibility makes for easy storage and versatility in molding into shape for various body parts.

Having trouble with the same thing here in Texas, it's a warm winter but it doesn't get cold cold here til on into February and March. Went for an afternoon hike yesterday at around 4 next thing I know sun is going down over a hill and it's getting cool and dark. Was pretty disappointed

What do you guys think about buying surplus army rations to take as camping food?
I'm going on a 10 day hike, and I'll need all my own food from the start. I've toyed with bags of oats, rice, and looked at camping food by companies like Mountain House, but it all seems either very expensive for little calories or very heavy and bulky.
So i looked up how they do it in the military, and discovered that you can quite easily buy military rations online. You can get an entire days calories for a reasonable price and a small enough size. Such as these.

So I've never gone out, but want to. It seems to me, and I may be wrong, but it seems that it would be best to take raw high energy density stuff that you can make into other things. Stuff like high protein flour, powdered milk, anything dehydrated and with a good packing density. Am I missing something?

Because it will be heavy as fuck son. Thats the appeal of freeze dried meals suck as Mountain House. They weigh very little. When I do a long distance hike I try to keep pack weight as low as I comfortably can. It makes for a much more enjoyable hike
I'm looking into buying a pair of nightvision binoculars for use on a boat. A friend once demonstrated how useful it can be during night-time approach to shore and similar. In any case, I've browsed a bit and seen many options, however I'm looking for quality and longetivity, as in the binocs should last a few years and have decent night-vision illumination capabilities.
Seeing how this is the outdoors board, it seems the best place to find people who had to purchase a pair sometime, and would know which brands are good and which to avoid.

Buy a good one, GPS is accurate to a meter, and the unbridled GPSs receivers of the army are even more accurate.
If you want to see at night, lamps are what you need. If you really want to drive a boat all lamps off, any NV google are fine, even the "cheap" ones, but it does not worth a lamp.

Mine is my space saver mug, often i'll forego a mess kit and just bring this, fits a can of chili, 20oz of water, 2 packs of ramen, etc. and it fits on the bottom of a nalgene bottle.

My favourite piece of kit when I'm actually out is usually the stuff I wouldn't care to mention, but water tight compression sacks. Keeps everything tidy and dry (for as long as I can manage anyway).

I went flyfishing with a guide this fall and at the end of three days I just gave they guy a 50. I had paid the fees to the flyshop in advance and they really did not say anything about tips.
I got the feeling the guide was a bit disappointed.
This week I dropped of two snowboards and some skis to get tuned up. I pick them up tomorrow and have no idea if I am even expected to tip at all.
