53 KB,
Hey /out/ I've been trying to find a wool blanket for my outdoor kit. I looked into the surplus world as it was cost effective but I can't seem to find any of the higher rated army wool blankets. The swedish officer blanket is just gone. The German one seems to be hard to find but I did find a bulgarian blanket. The Italian is entirely too expensive for what it is. Can anyone suggest a good civilian cost effective alternative the surplus blankets or link me to some of the surplus ones I can't seem to find?
Pic related would be ideal but I don't think its...

Is there a reason it has to be wool?

Even a cheap synthetic sleeping bag is as good as or better than a woolen blanket in every way.
>warmth to weight
>warmth to volume
>ease of care
>durability
>drying time
>warmth while wet
>cost
>availability

I don't mean to be "that guy"... but sleeping...

European style rothco is 90% wool and $35 on Amazon. I use mine all the time inside and out.

If you're wanting something better then look into Golden Dawn blankets on ebay. They are copies of Hudson bay blankets.

Also keep in mind a wool blanket will not keep you as warm as a good sleeping bag and it will weigh more.

The pros is wool is great in wet conditions and you'll get all the hott hippie bushcraft babes.

If the weather isn't terrible and you have a fire, it's amazing....

Hey guys I'd like to hear your opinions on hiking alone in desert. I basically have 2 "fears" in this field - Being the only soul sleeping in this little tent with no help around in case of bandits(got no gun)/animals, second is like twisting my anckle or falling with no help around.

Thought? Experiences?

I doubt you will meet banditos. As for everything else, make a plan, tell someone when you're supposed to be back and share that plan with them. If you don't make it time, have the person contact emergency services.

Really that's the big one. So many people could possibly be saved if they just let someone know where they were going.
>>

I have traveles couple of times in the desert. I know it, I know what its like, how much water I gonna need. I'll print the exact route I'll be traveling but yet I find it a bit scary to be alone in this endless nothing. I guess I will start with 1 day hikes then move to sleeping out too.

I'm not from that area of Ireland but you may enjoy the area around glenmalure and the Wicklow mountains in general. To my knowledge the rest of that entire area is just boring flat farmland. You could also have a look at the Cooley mountains further up the coast about an hour from Dublin, and the Ring of Gullion just across the border in Co Armagh (about ~1.5 hrs from Dublin).

This is for camping because I don't know anything about photography.
>>
Wicklow Mountains are the only decent range of mountains in Ireland.

In general everything in Ireland has an owner, so the Natural Parks might have a length of 10 km max from one side to the other. Don't expect 100 of kilometers in each direction like in the US....

Anyone have any luck growing exotic fruits? I dont mean just the mini lemon trees you can get at a store (though I do have one of them, and I love it). I was thinking of trying to grow things like Pawpaw or black sapote; fruits just I can't find anywhere.

Do ANY of you have experience with growing those-or any other fruits-indoors? Living in Michigan limits what I can grow; and while Pawpaw can grow outside here, most any other fruits cant.

Same exact problem, man, except I've moved across the river to Canada lately. Are you looking for novel flavor, or just a wildly exotic plant? If you just want something to look at, the Japanese fiber banana works in certain parts of Michigan. Actually, according to the USDA PLANTS database, figs grow wild in Macomb County, so that might be something to look at, too.

What part of Michigan are you in? Microclimates from cities and lakes can make a big difference for what you can grow outdoors, and you might...

I'm in NY Zone 7, Kiwiberries grow incredibly well, but they take like 4 years to get any fruit from. as long as you keep them trellised, trimmed and watered, you get an incredible amount of fruit, they are tough, last year was the coldest winter we've had in a long while, hitting zero or below zero a few times, it didn't seem to bother the plant in the slightest.
>>
>>660557
Flavor, mostly. I'm trying to eat healthy, and the best way to encourage myself to do so is having plenty of tasty, nutritious things around to eat. So, plants that can offer delicious fruits just lying around growing by a sunny window or a short walk to the backyard is a great way to keep me from driving to the local gas station for snacks. Also, they add flavor to the healthy dishes I cook up.

Hey /out/, anyone here have an /out/ dog? I'm looking for one that would be good on hikes, walks in the forest, and overnight camping.

2 MB,
I'm going solo winter camping for the first time tomorrow. I am an experienced camper but I've never gone out alone. There aren't any dangerous animals to worry about in the area I will be in but I'm worried about the irrational fears that strike people in the woods. Any tips for not getting totally spooked out on solo trips?

Inb4 stop being a pussy. The woods are spooky at night and I'm not afraid to admit it. Take your quasi macho BS elsewhere. I don't give a shit about adhering to anyone's ideal of masculinity except for my own.

Avid hiker but I'm looking to do something a little more /out/, looking to do a multiday trek, now my biggest issue is my lack of knowledge, I know the very basics on building a fire etc but after reading some threads on here I'm realising that a lot of 'survival' stuff I've read or watched is just memes. Do you guys have any suggestions for books or websites where I can learn real knowledge about the outdoors?

Exactly what I mean when I say I'm realizing all I've seen/read is just meme bullshit, I want to learn about something useful and that I can use rather than stuff that I might need if I'm the only survior of a plane crash in the Andes

I think you're better off crashing in the Andes with a soccer team on board.

Concur with everything here, except the alcohol stove thing which varies. During "extreme" fire danger they are outright banned. They're generally too fussy and dangerous in dry areas. Kick it over and spill flaming liquid all over your shoe, fun (a trail name is born).

In addition, ditch boots, get trail runners. Left is the #1 shoe on the PCT for the past five years or so. "Wild" Danner boots are too heavy and uncomfortable. Solar charger is gonna be in the mail after the first 100 miles, just get an Anker battery and charge in town. You'll probably need a puffy insulating layer for the Sierra.

DAE feel like that?

I have been (more or less) regularly browsing /out/ for 1-2 years now, occasionally posting in some gear thread (mostly double-use stuff like backpacks, watches), and I find it super fascinating and exciting to follow the threads.

But tbqhfam i've never even sleep outside in my life.

I just find it super comfy to read from my comfortable armchair in my air-conditioned house about people doing survival, prepping, etc.

Full disclosure, I *have* travelled a lot (way more than avg), lots of countries, lots of backpacking.

Just not into nature.

Am I missing out?
