Its a new year! Its the middle of winter and I want to go camping /o/ What are your plans for when the weather warms up? Its about this time of year when I get the itch for camping and kayaking but dont want to freeze while sleeping and am not keen on trying to blaze a path through ice with my boat. What trips are you planning?

Every other year before this one, I have stopped fishing during the coldest winter months. This winter, I vowed to keep fishing all winter, spring, summer, and fall. So far, it's been fun but cold. Lucky for me the winter has been mild this time.

Thats got to be nice! Is it warm enough to sleep outside comfortably for the most part? I have seriously been debating on getting snow shoes just so i can still venture into the woods

I'm right near Binghamton too, there isn't a whole lot of places close by, but get up to the Adirondacks and you've got some of the best spots in the country.

Chenango Valley State park is alright to check out, it's close by, but pretty developed in most of it, but it's good to just get out and day hike it.

Oakley Corners forest is outside of Owego. It's nothing special, but no one is there when I go. You can kind of explore it in peace. Pretty small though.

For hunting, head south into Pennsylvania off the Great Bend Exit (first...

Forgot to add Ketchumville state forest, close to Oakley Corners. It's undeveloped, no marked trails. There and Oakley Corners you can dispersed camp.

Ive ran at CV state park a few times for cross country races but i never knew there was hiking to do. i always thought it was just "Camping" sites and family picnics.

Silly thread but it's a nice departure from the norm I'll bite.

-Gravity manipulator to make your pack weigh less or nothing
-A solar panel that wirelessly and extremely quickly charged any electronic device ( a stretch I know)

Can't think of anything else at the moment. Your water bottle idea is great OP.

Is it a retarded idea to go out in wilderness (mostly a forest and lake area) for a few days? I'm currently stressed out by some stuff and want to go somewhere calm. I've been learning bushcraft for a few years on and off, so I think I will survive.

What do you want to remind me of? Are there any precautions? Also, how do I avoid getting robbed/assaulted while sleeping?

If you want to destress, go to a lale with hella steak, a canoe, and some pot or beer.

Also, its winter, so pack for warmth. Its always colder than you think itll be.

No. Everyone here greatly exaggerates dangers while out to make their lives seem more exciting. You'll be fine.
>>
>Also, how do I avoid getting robbed/assaulted while sleeping?

You don't. It happens to everyone so just be mentally prepared. Or alternatively you could do the raping and robbing. Your choice

Let's say I walked to the Scottish Highlands and kept going North and staying generally to the far North of Scotland. No tent, too broke to even afford one. Only a medium backpack, clothes on my back, including waterproofs, gloves, a hat.

How would I survive without relying on civilisation? I assume there would be plenty of fresh water and scarce but hopefully sufficient for survival forageable food. My main concern would be shelter/ surviving weather.

Thoughts? Tips on food sources and shelter ideas for someone in that situation? Perhaps using natural landmarks...

The best foraging is trashcans. Also some bins have knives you can use to protect yourself. Sleep in McDonalds bathrooms or crawl into the attic. You will be fine m8. Live your dream. Allahu ackbar salamimylaykun

Thanks. I've browsed 4chan frequently and infrequently since 2005, but this is my first post on /out/. I expected more hostility, it's warming to get a genuine reply. I'll keep your advice in mind, though I was considering more living in wooded areas and wilderness than a place with a lot of mcdonalds and trashcans.

I would highly suggest getting a tent of some sort. Sleeping without shelter will be extremely difficult, especially in a place like Scotland.

Those of you who live in or have visited Southeast Alaska, what was your experience like?

Recently, I visited Haines and I had the time of my life. The community is SUPER nice, great food, INCREDIBLE scenery, great trails, gorgeous lakes, and an awesome radio station (KHNS). I really couldn't be more fond of Haines, however I've only visited Haines and Juneau in S.E. Alaska. Is there anywhere else that I should go when I decide to go back to Haines again?

Post pics of your travels in Southeast Alaska too if have them.

165 KB,
Hello I tried posting this thread on /diy/ but perhaps this board is more appropriate.

I want to buy a book on vegetable/herb/fruit growing since its something I want to get into. Ideally it should be one huge tome full of everything I need but one introductory book + one advanced seems reasonable too.

I have tried googling some recommendations but have not found anything that I like, most books seem to be full of pictures but little useful information. Can anyone suggest anything?

Also nothing like that exists per se. Also, most books are pushing only 1 type of gardening technique. It is better to get your info from a great range of books or simply from online. It needs to be tailored to your vegetables, climate/environment, and scale.

You can find a .pdf of John Seymour's The complete book of self-sufficiency.

It's a little old fashioned but an interesting read, and covers all the basis so you have a good working knowledge of the whole system and the interplay between different elements.
