I live in Massachussetts and a bunch of butthurt assholes are bitching about the bird conversation efforts on our beaches.

Who's side are you on?

being able to converse with birds is awesome
>a little birdy told me that....

it's great that they're actually making an effort to help the local birds.

all they do here is bitch about feral cats being shot on our islands where all the sea birds breed, their numbers have been declining every year due to it.

Hey guys, I've been thinking of getting into knife hunting. What kind of gear should I be looking to get? Any advice for a first time knife hunter? Should I practice on smaller animals and then move up to bigger and more dangerous ones?

You want to get into knife hunting but none of your questions are about dogs? Good luck with that.
>>
>>787167
doable i have seen it with and without dogs too.
without dog you can still practice endurance hunting. simply run the prey to exhaustion overpower it and stab it in the heart.
with dogs pretty much the same but you run less.

Calorie wise its not worth its own weight.

Beef jerky is lighter and contains way more protein. Same with spaghetti noodles.

Can anyone recommend me some good, inexpensive (<$50) hot weather hiking pants for use up in areas like red rock canyon and red mountain?

I unironically wear 5.11 taclites. Got em' for $35 when they went on sale a while back.

Khaki, obviously.

Had mine for three years and while they're stained as hell, they haven't torn despite my tendency to free climb bare rock faces.

I wear chinos that I bought on a thrift store with a base layer, and gaiters if needed. I would wear denim but they don't dry as fast and don't retain heat that well imo.

What are some /out/ skills I can practice in my backyard?

It's been a good 14 or more years since I've last been camping and even then it was with the boyscouts at a big campground.

I can actually get a fire going using the fire steel and scrap wood/brush from around the yard, but just anything else I can and should practice would be nice.

Image related, all of my /out/ stuff. I realize
>Bear Grylls Knife
but it's what my dad bought me as a Christmas Present, so it comes from a good place and I'm going to use it.

How about friction fire?
>>
Practice camp cooking. It's actually one of the more neglected skills that makes /out/ experiences all the more comfy
>>
Honestly the backyard is where you should practice all your skills and test new gear. If a piece of gear fails, no big you're home and have access to shit to fix it, there is no better place to get familiar with your gear. Look at ol' Shug, he hangs hammocks in his backyard to test new ways to hang all the time. So, yeah do it as often as you can, it will only make you more comfortable with your skills and gear.

Let me make this clear to you autistic bastards that have never actually been outside

1) You don't need to have the best knife on the planet, nor will you ever be able to select such a knife
2) The weight of your backpack is completely irrelevant if it isn't difficult to carry
3) It is totally fine to have a fire in the woods, just don't leave it unattended
4) Leave no trace is good but not LITERAL, it doesn't mean footsteps you autistic fucks it means candy bar wrappers and beer cans
5)You don't NEED to only use trails, you are a human and can walk anywhere you please
6)Cairns do not hurt the environment
7)There is nothing wrong with packing things for comfort, you are having a good time in the woods, YOU ARE NOT GOING FOR A WORLD RECORD SPEED HIKE
8)Hunting and fishing for your food rather than bringing it is totally fine, whatever you prefer to do
9)It does not matter if you have a milsurp pack or a hiking pack
10)Paracord is wonderful and has many great uses
11)Biking on walking trails is very fun
12)You don't need to use designated camp sites
13)Camping is not very difficult at all, stop overcomplicating it
14)If you want to bushcraft there is nothing wrong with it, just as there is nothing wrong with car camping

I could keep going. I would NEVER want to camp with any of you dumb fucks.

Pic unrelated: Bear Grylls is allergic to bees and I find it funny

Sup anons,

Starting to get into bigger blades and need to step my sharpening game up. For my pocket knives I've been using a turn-box and finishing on a strop, but I'm thinking of investing in some proper stones to sharpen convex and scandi ground blades.

What do ya'll use?

I'm considering pic related to reset dull edges which is the arduous task. Can finish on higher grit sandpaper (have 1000,1500,2000 already handy).

Sound ok? I'd like to be able to sharpen recurves (my Khukri), long blades 10''+ and axes.

you won't be able to get curved parts very sharp with a wide stone, other than hat go for it

I use the lansky kit sometimes. It's fine and all, but just learn to freehand with it, so much better.

Most of the time I just use a slice of a red brick soaked in water overnight and a ceramic tile.

Not even a poorfag, they just work well.

I've been hiking my whole life, but I've never really prepared for it the way I should. I don't like carrying more than I need to. I brought 1L of water and a king sized Payday to get me up and down Yosemite falls last year. It was tough, and I ran out of batteries for my phone so I ended up hiking down with a high school kid and his mom since they had a flashlight.

When I was in college, I remember hiking up Mt. Laconte with a 12oz of water and nothing else. It was a seven hour hike, and I was saved by a Forrest Gump man who gave me half his bagel, in addition to some berries near the top.

In short, I'm stupid. And I don't pack properly. I want to change that on the cheap. I'm hiking up Gregory Bald tomorrow, which will be about 10 miles round trip, and about 2500ft elevation gain. It's not quite a day hike, but it's not a few hours either. What do you guys bring on this sort of hike?

Sounds like at a minimum you should bring water, a flashlight, and some food.

I mean think about it OP, what kinds of things could reasonably happen while you're hiking? Bring things to deal with those situations.
>>
>>790274
>10 miles round trip, and about 2500ft elevation gain.

Water. Probably rain gear and some snacks.

Unless there's something dangerous about the conditions (ice/snow, rockfall, cliffs, etc), then I will pack more actual emergency stuff: beacon/comms, firestarter, headlamp, essential first aid (iodine, gauze, tape, knife).

Hello /out/ friends. I didn't know if this was for here or maybe DIY.

Does anybody know what pic related is? Googling hasn't returned anything. I live in the Northeast US and the back of my yard is regularly overrun by this highly unpleasant, thorny and resilient overgrowth from the fuckers behind me.

This stuff grows like wildfire. I pulled all of it out in early spring and it's already back if not thicker than before. I've tried a few of the "natural" and Internet favorite weed killing methods and now I'm considering using my cultivator to go through the entire back and just dig it up. The problem is that it has incredibly deep roots and just trying to do anything because the thorns are sharp and burn like hell. I'm honestly thinking about hitting them with bleach.
L
Any advice please? I can get better pictures.

Lots of luck OP.
Idk how you could truly eradicate it without massive and potent poisoning or literally digging it all out by the roots down to the very last strand.

Try checking with your local city or county extension office. they may have tips/advice on certain nuisance plants like this.

I've got two questions for you guys.
Firstly, I am tanning the pelt of an animal I can't identify. I thought it was a raccoon when I picked it off the side of the road, but it's definitely not. The face was all black; no cute coon cheeks, and heavy padded forepaws, not like raccoon hands at all. But about the same size, and with a ringed tail. Long fox-like snout.
It looks *exactly* like pic related -- except pic related lives in South America, and I'm in Maine. Do we have invasive coatimundi population in New England, or am I crazy?
It's not a fisher cat, it's not an oppossum.

Second question: this lardass's pelt has been driving me crazy trying to scrape the fat off it. I'm stretching it over a plank and all the techniques I can find on google. What am I doing wrong?
