I can understand why you wouldn't want to give out your real name to a bunch of strangers you meet in the woods miles away from anywhere, but I think the idea of giving yourself some tryhard hipster name is just lame. I guess the idea is to have some sort of instant culture that can allow you to quickly form friendship bonds with strangers? "Ha ha! You did/said some unremarkable thing! Well lads , not really out related but the Mrs and I have made the decision to move out of the city to get a little small holding going. We are thinking a few acres to keep a few pigs and chickens. Grow our own fruit and veg etc.
Looking for other sc/out/s opinions on what is the best option.
We are thijking either rent a house with a few acres or buy a few acres and build on it ourselves.
With the purchasing of land tho we would need to be really frugral on the building of a house, so we are thinking log cabin or container build

The biggest hassle with building non-traditional is by-laws and building codes. (also fuck container builds)
Remember you won't be able to raise chickens or pigs for less than to buy them at the grocery store (although yours will obviously be better quality) but taking vacation time away when you have animals is a special kind of head ache. I moved into the country, we have ducks and chickens, and we built our own house AMA.

Do you have to be dive certified to go on a dive tour? Like I'm trying to go to the Virgin Islands in July. And I was hoping to just go on a day dive or whatever with a local shop on a tour. Would I have to be certified to do that, even though I would have a instructor/guide in the water with me the whole time?

Last year during the summer vacances I tried to do it but the guys there didn't let me do it because I had zero training, even though I'm in good shape and can swim pretty well. It was a fucking bummer but well at least I still got to see a shark that came swimming to the shore.
While I cannot answer your question directly, as a former diver I can highly advise that you get beginners experience and at least certify in something before you go. My first open water ocean dive was one I'll never forget but if I were an inexperienced diver on vacation, it would have been a whole different experience.

Some dive shops will let you do a quick intro course and then you go dive. You don't get certified, but it's a good way to get a taste.

Any Americans ever bring a handgun across the Canadian border? I'm going on a trip through the NW and plan on going into Canada for a few days, and I plan on entering and exiting at different places so leaving it at the border would be a pain. I am reading that you have to fill out some forms but how much of a PITA is it and how does it work when you cross, are the border guards shitty about it? The gun is a Glock 20, I have a 10 round mag for it.
Handguns are restricted in canada. If you somehow actually get approved to bring it, you will only be allowed to use it at a range.
You need to ask yourself if you REALLY need that gun for a few days. Pistols are restricted as fuck in Canada, if you get caught you have very good chances to end up in jail. Tbh telling the police that you only needed it for a few days makes you look like a hitman.
