Good /out/door literature? Need some things to read over the winter.

I was about to post. Literally summer has barely started. Then I felt dumb and realized the flawed logic.

Idk any good out books. Dunno last time I even read a book. Probably like the 3rd grade or some shit. Why not do some winter foraging instead?

What do you think about magnet fishing. I consider buying a 110kg-force magnet for 20€ on aliexpress.

Any experience?

Are you fishing with magnets or for magnets?
>>
>>787923
I think it's using rare earth magnets to "fish" for "treasure", like water based metal detecting.

Could be a great way to get some free guns from your local river in your city.
>>
>>787928
I don't think you want river guns.

Any of you folks carry a gun while /out/?
I obviously bring my deer rifle along when I'm going on hunting trips, but I'm considering getting something like pic related for solo hikes.
Just in case I ran into a weirdo or had to end myself as starvation set in.
Are there laws against carrying in most state forests?

>Are there laws against carrying in most state forests?
Unless it is illegal in general in your state, the open transportation of firearms is perfectly legal in national forests. There's only a handful of states that don't allow open carry and I don't think any of the ones that do care about if you carry in the forest or not. If you're doing long distance hikes and you're not in bear country, I'd recommend a compact, polymer frame pistol than a revolver. More ammo and less weight.
>>
State Parks out west allow a .22lr revolver specifically and you can't shoot it unless you have to dispatch a snake in your boot or fend off a backwoods serial killer.

I usually go to national forests and unless I go there to shoot, I just bring my .38 revolver for no particular reason, just because fuck carrying around a 10lb longarm for no reason.
>>

I carry an old bolt action 12 gauge. 2 in the magazine and one in the chamber. Never really shot anything but hogs with it.

I've only ever camped in state rec areas or forest campgrounds, but I want to start doing some dispersed camping in state or national forests. It seems like a nice way to get away from people and enjoy nature. I've done a little bit of research but I'm still not sure about some things. Can I just park my car on the side of a forest road and hike in to some random spot and camp for a few days? Do I have to get any special permits or pay anything? Are there any special rules about fires or firewood I should know about I live in Michigan by the way. Any tips or stories about random camping would be appreciated too.

>Dispersed camping can take place on state-owned land other than state parks, recreation areas, state forest campgrounds or state game area campgrounds, and is free of charge. You can camp anywhere on state forest property as long as:

>the property is not posted "No Camping"
>you follow all State Land Rules
>you are more than one mile from a designated state forest campground

>You must also post a Camp Registration Card at your campsite. Post this card prominently at the campsite before making camp and leave it posted upon departure

Seems like it's just a simple matter of printing off that card, then going innawoods.

Here's the state land rules:

I suggest just calling a DNR field office/customer service center or USFS headquarters near the state/national forest you intend to camp in. Im not sure about the parking, but the rest is straight forward (print off the free permit, attach near campsite, only collect firewood from ground, stay no longer than 14 days in one spot, and be at least 1 mile from a designated trail or campground, clean up). The parking issue might depend on the situation (i.e. would you plan be parking along a major roadway or just on some shitty pull-off on a logging road). To be safe you could park at a trailhead or day-use area and let them know which car is yours.

I work for michigan dnr but neither for forestry division or at an office. Search the michigan website for the phone numbers otherwise i can get them for u tomorrow.

What are the best ways to invest in a future where I can spend lots of time going to new places and being outdoors? Without being a full on hobo I mean.

I currently am at rock bottom financially and have practically nothing to my name but i want to go experience the outdoors and I'm not sure what's the most suitable lifestyle for that would be job/work wise.

sorry if this is a vague or common question.

Why not just hobo it up? You dont have to spend forever at it. Give yourself a taste, then maybe you will get a little bit of it out of your system and you can do what the other anon said

For extra ridiculous money. Save up a bit and buy a van/camper truck/rv to live in so you dont have to pay rent

You're going on a five day hike. You can expect rain, cold nights, and significant elevation change. There will be no deserts or associated heat extremes. There will be no shelters or resupply along the way, though there will be ground water (which needs to be purified somehow). You're hiking for recreation, not competition or survival.

How much does your pack way?
29 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>791687
14-15kg at the start, I prefer to have a prudent amount of gear when going solo.
>>
3 kg
>>
I'd say about 40lbs.

I'm a pretty big guy so I need a lot of food. For five days I'd need 10-12lbs of food, plus I'd want 2-3L of water on me at any point in time. So that's about 15-18lbs of consumables at the onset. Pack, bivi, tarp, sleeping bag, pad, raingear, clothes, filter, stove, and creature comforts all add up as well.

I really need to buy a lighter pack though. And I tend to pack with the expectation of colder conditions than I actually end up encountering.

I'm leaving for 3 weeks of hiking the Georgian mountains, the country, not the state.

Anyone been there, or any other part of the Caucasus? Share your experiences.

If there's interest I'll try to keep you guys updated on how it's going.

Hit up the northern caucasus if you get the chance, round about Roza Khutor. Touristy bit followed by miles of unspoilt mountains, plus summer is picking up now and there aren't any bears.

Northern caucasus that would be across the russian border?
My plan is to spent about a week in sventi and then omali to kazbek. Finishing up with a climb to the top of the 5k peak.
Have you climbed any of the peaks?

I want to do albroa some day... so i'll probably be back in a few years this time on the russiab side of things.

If you have some recomwnded trails on either side of the borser, please tell. Might hit them this time or the next.

Anyone coming home this year?
Looking at Maine, Vermont or New Hampshire so far.

Need some help from my CO bros. Anyone been to Clear Creek south of Leadville before? I need to know how common bears are out there this time of year so I know how to handle my food and shit. Going car camping because of my little brother but I don't want a bear bashing in my windows to get some food.

Just tie your food in a bag high up in a tree.

also come to Utah because we're better.

Leadville here.

the last bear attack we had was a few years back at Twin Lakes, somewhat north of there. It was in the fall though. Starving bear went into a sleeping kid's tent and gnawed his leg.

Bears are relatively common in that area. You're not likely to see one unless you leave food or dirty dishes/trash out though.

Also they're just waking up atm, so they're hungry little fucks. I've never heard of them trying to get into a car, so if that's your plan you're fine.

if you camp outside the car just hang your food, trash and dishes. Preferably not next to your damn tent. Also no eating in the tent.

How dangerous is it to get caught up in a thunderstorm while hiking in the mountain?

I mean I could die, but what counter measures could reduce the risk when the weather suddenly changes or smth?

It depends. Are you below the treeline? Find a low spot among trees and bunker down.

Are you above the treeline? Try to find a boulder to hide under or move aside rocks and hide deep down in the boulder field as possible. Then pray to whatever God seems closest
>>
>>788892
I wouldn't worry about lightning as much as flash floods or land slides depending on the terrain and how much rain that comes down.
>>
>>788932

okay, definitely makes sense since we had big floods in nothern bavaria during the past weeks.
