Hey guys I'm going on a 3 day solo backpacking trip next weekend. There is a solid chance of rain. Any tips for backpacking in the rain?

Also any idea for lightweight hot meals to make while on the trail? I've been making Ramen but I'm thinking I might want more variety.

Make sure every individual object in your pack is waterproof. Zip-lock baggies are good for this, or dry sacks if you've got them. Then line your empty pack with a large contractor grade clear garbage bag, and pack with all the waterproofed items as normal. Gives you limited redundancy in case your pack fails to be sufficiently waterproof.

Gather fuel ahead of time before it rains, and put it in a garbage bag. Carry it with you if necessary. You don't want to be stuck in a situation where you can't...

If you dice potatoes into 2 cms cubes aprox it takes literally 5 minutes for them to be cooked. You can add whatever you want to them or mash them if you want to.

>lightweight hot meals

Vermicelli & a tube of sauce (not a can) - Vermicelli cooks in 4-5 minutes, and a tube of sauce will be thicker and more concentrated than a can, and has less trash to haul out. Make sure you also have a little plastic bottle of olive oil (easy to find a small plastic bottle at a dollar store). You can also bring a baggie of dry parmesan.

Kraft Mac & Cheese - Ditch the box and put the noodles in a ziplock. Put the sauce in another ziplock with...

Ok /out/, please help me with this one. I'm interested in buying a good wool blanket. Doesn't need to be fancy, even just a green army blanket is fine. The issue I have is quality control, every website I've visited, it seems like a total crapshoot, whether you purchase a new or used blanket.

Apparently these blankets shed so much fiber in the wash they become thin and useless? Where can I go to look for a good blanket? Is it worth it? Should I say screw it and just take fleece instead?

Wool general, I guess

Filson© has really nice Mackinaw Wool Blankets™ made from 100% virgin wool for just under $300.

Great deal considering it's handmade® in the USA.

That would make a pretty stylish bedroll, but I'd feel bad laying that on the ground. So good wool will indeed cost me more than $100 then?

Just get used to it. It's mid-high 80s now and I'm wearing jeans and a thin sweater.

Drink water when you need to and don't overwork yourself and you will be straight.
>>

you use adequate cloths, sunscreen, and you hidrate yourself even when you don't want. I often go for hikes, mtb and running with temperatures above 32/33ºc and no problems.

But then again I'm a medfag so that's pretty usual here during late May/June/July/August/September so it's fine. 23/25ºc is like the sweet spot for me.

So I live and work in Arizona, normally I can deal with the heat I even work in my forge during the summer but I'm working construction so I cant just walk away and sit down for a couple minutes or everybody starts crying. Now it's already 105+ out here. How do I beat the heat with a hardhat on?

5'2, 110 lbs/1.58 m, 50 kg. I expect my gear to be around 20 kg. The trails will vary, but almost always in mountains/hills I think.

I legitimately have no clue what this plant is. I have no intent to do anything with it, I'm just curious. I saw it today while going on a nice long walk through a forested trail. There was only one of them, and I've never seen it before. Needless to say, I think it's gorgeous, I'm just pretty clueless about plant identification

Thistle, its all over the Eastern U.S. It thrives on disturbed sites.

It's the most common invasive/pest species on earth. How sheltered are you OP? Btw, depending on which on it is, the flowers can be bretty nice.

Yeah, like others have said - Thistle. Specifically, it looks like Bull Thistle right before the pretty purple flower buds out. You can eat the stalk (peel it).

Hey /out/, I'm planning a camping trip with my friends next weekend and i'm going to be doing it in a state owned forest that is like an hour away from me. What are some essentials that I should bring? What are some things you always bring? I've gone camping before with my family but never anything that wasn't on a designated camp ground. Any tips you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

That's a really broad question. Are we talking about car camping? Or are you hiking out to a remote site? What sort of gear do you already have? What sort of gear do your friends have? Are you going to be sharing a tent? Or are you making individual shelters?

If you're going to be hiking any significant distance you'll want to plan what you pack as a group to cut down on redundancy and lighten everyone's load a bit. For example, no need to hump three or four stoves and water filters, and half...

Why don't you ask the owner of the camper
>>
>>785725
Depends on how cold is it for a 30 lbs tank. My camper can run heat all night near freezing for a few days on 2 30lbs tanks. If you have electricity via generator, get a small electric space heater. We have one that looks just like a little fan, heats our whole camper down to about 45 degrees. Below that and need the regular heater.

If you have no fridge, get some coolers and fill with ice. RV fridges are crazy expensive since they run on both propane and electricity.

If the waste tanks are full, the camper...

If you cannot survive where you are, go to where you can survive. See pic. Secure all of the things on the bottom most layer before trying to secure any of the stuff from the layers above it.

I thought i could start a trapping thread, I know it's not trapping season but i thought i would share some of my past experiences. I didn't lay any traps last year but i did in 2014 (my first time). I got one marten, pic related and ten fucking ferrrets. I don't live in USA so the prices for the fur is very low. I got around 18 USD for the marten and a little over a dollar each for the ferrets, keep in mind they were untanned. So how are the prices in your country? What are you trapping?

One of the ferrets i caught. I was trapping for mink but i didn't get a single one. I caught one ferret almost every week the whole season on five traps that i had layed out around my property within 600 meters from my house.
>>

Fur prices are low in the US also. At least compared to their historical values.

I used to trap when fur brought good prices, and have here and there when I just wanted something to tan. My older brother put himself through college doing it, back when a red fox could fetch $60 and blanket beaver $75. Now they'd bring $10 unless Russia or China decide not to buy and then it'd be $0.

If raccoon or muskrat were reliably in the double digits I would start back up. There are so many of both around...

Landscapes and flora for the most part. Maybe insects from time to time. Compact enough that I can have it not stowed in my pack 24/7 and still not get in the way.
