Would it be feasible to carry a lightweight sword like this one while /out/ for self defense? Seems to me like one could stop a charging bear or mountain lion, or at least scratch one up enough that it leaves you alone.

We'd like to think that we could stop a bear with handheld blunt or sharp weapons, but in reality only a gun could do it. In some cases, even a handgun doesn't have enough stopping power to make a bear leave you alone, you'd need a rifle.

I have crossbows with plenty of ammunition, air rifles, ect. I live in the east of England where the land is quite marshy, and I have river which is only around 600 metres from my house. I don't think I will necessarily need to stock up on food, as the land near me has a shit tonne of rabbits and other edible animals that would be easy to hunt.

The world ain't gonna turn Mad Max, like ever. Human society is retarded yeah but we're not cannibals. The worst that'll happen during an economic collapse is maybe you won't be able to buy food for a month, MAYBE, but the idea that everyone's gonna be running around killing and robbing each other is plain ludicrous.
We have the resources, the problem is the system that allocates them is fragile and needs to be replaced, which is doable. At most it'll be a month or so of turmoil and then people's paychecks will start coming back in and everything will keep running as it always has.

So Texasbro may or may not try to make a little spreadsheet for beginner rods and reels <$100 to help new anons out. I figure we try and cover 2 or 3 spinning reels from each of the main brands. A reel around $40, and maybe another in the $75-$100 range from each brand that are readily available at most big retailers. I already mentioned a few in the last thread like Shimano Sienna and Sedona, Abu Cardinal and Orra, Daiwa Laguna, Pflueger Presidents, etc. We welcome any other reccommendations for the list.
Same goes for rods- Shimano Sellus, Abu Vengeance and Vendetta, Ugly Stiks of course, Berkley Lighting Rods, Fenwick Eagles, St. Croix Triumph, and maybe some Bass Pro and Cabela's store brand rods.

A lot of those prices don't seem too bad considering the value of the Loonies or whatever your Maple Dollhairs are called. But I think at Bass Pro, you will at least have options.
You can spend $3-$4 on Rooster Tails instead of $7 on Mepps. As well as $3 on Bass Pro brand cranks if you don't want to drop $10ea on a bunch of Rapalas. And for senko worms, you can get $4 bags of Yum and Zoom baits instead of $10 Yamamoto bags.

The only /out/ knife I own is a Mora Bushcraft Black. I've been tempted many times to shell out for a Fallkniven or Esee, but have always prioritised clothing, shelter, and other bits of /out/ kit, or put the cash towards travels.
Having said that, I invested in the water stones recommended by uncle Ray and brought it to shaving sharp, and it's a real pleasure to use. So far everything I've used it for has been pretty much novelty stuff, just little day trips innawoods to practice basic skills, except the odd time I've needed a fucking sharp knife as a tool or in the kitchen.
But to answer your question - yes, it's been used, but not as much as it probably should have been. I'm looking forward to putting it through it's paces in Spring when I start getting /out/ a little more

All my life, my mom has been yelling at me to stop hiking alone. She was an avid hiker for most of her life until her 40's, she began believing that it was too dangerous to go hiking/backpacking alone. I always thought she was just over-dramatic until I began listening to these stories.
Supposedly, there are many many people who are disappearing in national parks and national forests. On top of that, there are also many young men who are being found dead in the Mississippi river in the Midwest.

I've hiked alone in the woods in pitch blackness far away from anything. Didn't get murdered, raped, or eaten. But it is pretty eerie when you get that feeling that you're being watched. There probably are serial killers who prey on loners in the woods though, easy target and low chance of being caught.

In high school I did a lot of night hiking. Just a flashlight through wetlands, I only had one strange experience. This was also in an extremely isolated place where killers wouldn't even bother going.

The guy is a bigfoot fanatic and has written lots of books on the subject. Missing 411 is just another attempt to build attention for bigfoot and his other works.
Also, he's kind of an idiot. He refuses to believe that people dying of hypothermia would remove their clothes, despite the fact that this is a well documented occurrence. As a last attempt to stay warm the body will move blood from the core to the surface which causes the person to feel hot and flushed, prompting many to remove their clothes to "cool off" because they don't realize what's actually happening.

Once I forgot a drybag with electronics and first aid stuff (gps, plb, camera, tape, treatment for blisters etc.) + correct insoles and instant coffee. Not fun when you've been traveling for 15h with train and bus and walked an hour just to discover that some fairly important stuff is missing.
I've had at least two or three 'nightmares' where I went hiking and realized I forgot a bunch of stuff.
drove 40 min, realized forgot boots. went home, got boots, drove hour and half back towards camping zone and realized forgot tarp.
thankfully my mate had one i could squeeze under.
Not me but my pal forgot one of the spreader bars for his bridge hammock. Made a bushcraft replacement using a length of branch and tent pegs.

Is it by chance the guide on the tip? If so, they sell kits to replace them at Walmart. I've done it once before on an old rod; worked fine. If by chance you bought it from Walmart, they'll likely replace the rod for free if they still carry that model/you still have the receipt.
