What's your favourite way of making a fire?
120 posts and 14 images submitted.
>>
potassium permanganate & glycerin
>>
If you get good at using firesticks its objectively the best method. Can be done anywhere, with infinite supply, at any time of the day.
Firebow is equally as good but requires more preperation.
If you suck at firesticks, a magnesium flint is good, but they dont last forever.
Magnifying glass is only good in the summer or africa.
Lighter and matches are shit tier.

well last time; after i did everything i needed to it was kinda boring then i burned my hand adjusting a piece of wood that had ember on the underside which i didn't see. after that it was kinda miserable.
the pain of even a small second degree burn if you stop cooling it for a second is really fucking distracting.

Hatchet or small axe?
125 posts and 32 images submitted.
>>
tomahawk
>>
Small axe. A small head on a long shaft gives a good balance between weight and functionality.

>>695436
Don't listen to this guy. Tomahawk is okay but they don't have the edge geometry for splitting and so make a poor replacement for an axe.
>>
>>695435
hatchet is what they call small axes

Can you help me with completing my first loadout? I am a total beginner to /out/ activities. My first trips are going to be two days (one night spent in the forest) for now, in summer, central Europe.

Pic related is what I have so far. I am not terribly tight on the budget but still I don't want to spend much since I believe army surplus stuff is high quality for good price.

I probably went full retard at some point, bear with me please.

OP here, there is actually a thread on this backpack here >>692716

Even though they don't say it's very good, I still might give it a shot since my trips won't be hardcore for starters and I don't need perfect quality.
>>
sleeping bag
more food
maybe a stove for cooking, it depends on if it's legal to start fires during the summer in your area
clothes of course, that keep you warm and dry
some extra clothes in case you get wet
waterproof your items or have raincover for the backpack at least
sun cream and bug spray, but net
map and compass
a lighter or something else to ignite stuff with
>>
>>694326
I totally forgot about the sleeping bag.
It's a 10-20 degrees C mummy type, I already have it. I am not sure about its size though, it seems pretty big.

Do any of you do things to minimize the smell of food where you camp? Have you ever had issues with animals coming to your base because of the smell of food? I'm referring specifically to camping not on campgrounds. Any advice to reduce the smell of food and to avoid attracting animals to base.

Cook somewhere else... Pee around your camp.... Use ziplocks to contain smells... Use thoso odorants that gets animals away
>>
I hang my food bag a few hundred yards from camp. I also try keeping a fire lit all night. I never have any problems on the trails. I have my dog with me. I had a bear charge me once while I was fishing on a stream but my dog distracted it while I booted the fuck out of there. Came back later with a park ranger to get my stuff and find my dog. I whistled for him and he came around. Don't know what I would do without him.
>>
>>709407
Thank goodness the bear didn't kill your dog. Sounds like an awesome camping bro.

Is this worth buying? It seems pretty useful and handy and they seem to be selling them pretty cheap. I enjoy making fires but sometimes you don't want to work too hard.

The product itself doesn't really interest me, but do you see the rewards?? They're giving out oil canvas paintings too for what seems like cheap

I mean as long as you can start a fire and have before, you're fine. I guess it's for people who just don't feel like putting in a ton of work for a Bon fire.
